The Last Temptation of Christ (Nikos Kazantzakis,1951)

The Last Temptation of Christ
Touchstone Publishing | ISBN: 068485256X | PDF | 1.5 MB | 373 pages | translated from Greek By P.A. Bien

A monumental fictional reinterpretation of the Gospels by one of the giants of modern literature. It follows the life of Jesus Christ from his perspective. The central thesis of the book is that Jesus, while free from sin, was still subject to every form of temptation that humans face, including fear, doubt, depression, reluctance, and lust. Kazantzakis argues in the novel's preface that by facing and conquering all of man's weaknesses, Jesus struggled to do God's will, without ever giving in to the temptations of the flesh.

The World History of Organized Crime
5 eps. | AVI | 640×416 | xViD, 2 000 kb/s | MP3, 128 kb/s | 700 MB/ep. | 45 min/ep.

This enthralling series looks at both the origins and current state of organized crime in Sicily, Russia, Colombia, India, and China. It is thoroughly researched and beautifully put together, clearly elucidating the complex sociological roots that gave rise to today's cartels. Such fascinating topics as Russian prison tattoos and the ancient Indian Thug cult are discussed along the way. Though the producers don't shy away from pointing out governmental missteps that have inadvertently assisted in the rise of organized crime, the series comes down firmly on the side of law and order, and is careful to show the ruthlessness and brutality of the black market. The only hitches in the series come in the form of quick repetitions of information (that once followed commercial breaks), but these are only occasionally noticeable. Though densely informative, it never becomes dull or dry - indeed, once you start watching it, it's almost impossible to stop.

For all its evolutionary armor, the human brain is still a fragile organ. Our skull provides the first line of defense against physical injury. On the inside, sheets of membrane covering the brain keep out invading germs and toxins. But even these safety barriers cannot stave off all injury. They are no match against a head-on collision or the missile force of a bullet. In fact, traumatic brain injury is the number one killer of people under thirty-four. There is a saying used by doctors, "Touch the brain, never the same." When injury, stroke or disease touch the brain, lives change profoundly. But some of these lives tell stories of quiet victories, of miracles, both great and small. And these tales also open a window to the remarkable capacities of the brain, its power to repair and restore itself - a power we are just beginning to discover and understand.
