The film is set in the tense summer of 1939, just days before the outbreak of World War II. British intelligence officer Thomas Miller (Eddie Izzard) goes undercover as an English teacher at the prestigious Augusta Victoria College. The school is run by the headmistress Miss Rocholl (Judi Dench) and her devout assistant Ilse Keller (Carla Juri), and its students are the daughters of the Nazi elite, sent to England to learn the language and become ambassadors for the future National Socialist party.
