These recordings are a profound testimony to Françoise Groben's astonishing commitment to music, the large number of her international recitals and her encounters with the most important artists of her time. As she rarely had the time (or inclination?) to go into a recording studio, these live recordings keep her memory alive: some of them are of professional quality, others are remarkably good amateur recordings that we have remastered especially for this release remastered especially for this release. Overall, they convey their deep sense of emotion, expressiveness and technical perfection in a tangible dialog with their audience.

This CD - significantly only the second CD dedicated exclusively to von Zieritz - presents a longitudinal section of her oeuvre. It begins with the Japanese Songs, written in 1919, here in the version for soprano and chamber orchestra from the 1980s. The centrepiece is Le Violon de la Mort, composed in 1953 for violin and piano and arranged for violin, piano and orchestra in 1957, as well as the trumpet double concerto of 1975, the final piece and, as it were, a satyr play.

Johann Sebastian Bach arrived in Leipzig on May 22, 1723. After peaceful years in the small residence town of Cöthen he was moving to the busy mercantile and university city, forsaking the office of Capellmeister at the princely court for the post of Cantor, as he was to call it. Just eight days later, on May 30, Bach presented his first cantata. On every Sunday and feast day outside the periods of Advent and Lent preceding Christmas and Easter respectively, it was the task of the Thomaskantor to direct such pieces in the churches of St. Nicolai and St. Thomas in turn. He had at his disposal the more musical of the 55 boys at St Thomas’s school and eight instrumentalists paid by the City.

"The three main works on the CD are favourite pieces of mine that I often listened to as a student. One is the Suite No. 1 in E minor, BWV 996, by Johann Sebastian Bach. Another piece that I have always liked immensely, and which I thought that I will one day learn is the "Valses Poeticos" by Enrique Granados, and in the same way, I had started the "Sonatine pour harpe" op. 30 by Marcel Tournier, but never finished it. I then developed a plan to make a CD in order to create an additional project for myself using these three pieces as a basis. I combined the three great works by Bach, Granados and Tournier so that they became 'pathfinders', so to speak, with the Renaissance pieces by Mayone connecting these three longer pieces with one another. This has the effect of creating a larger whole that can be experienced as a single concept." - Markus Folker Thalheimer

"Heinrich Hofmann ( 1842-1902) had an unspectacular life, but enjoyed some spectacular successes. He rose to fame in 1869 at the age of 27 with his Parisian crime caper Cartouche; Jacques Offenbach's one-act plays were very popular in Berlin at the time. From then on, Hofmann no Ionger had to give piano Iessons, but was able to live off the proceeds of his compositions. With his programmatic symphony Frithjof (based on a Nordic saga), the heroic opera Armin, (which ends with the victory of the Cherusci in the Teutoburg Forest), and the ingenuous musical comedy Annchen von Tharau, (in which a young theology student cadges the folk song Annchen from the elderly lyricist Simon Dach), he created works which were frequently performed in his time, reflecting the zeitgeist of the years 1870 to 1890 following the founding of the German Empire. But even his honourable acceptance into the Berlin Academy of Arts could not prevent his works from being performed less frequently from the 1890's on. After his death, his music felI largely into obscurity."

In the male-dominated world of the time, in which women who performed and composed required special assertive skills, Johanna Senfter consciously refrained from a career in the wider world and limited her creative field to her birthplace of Oppenheim am Rhein near Mainz, not least because of her unstable health as a result of a severe bout of diphtheria in her childhood. This pragmatic self-limitation has given way to an interesting, decades-long debate, not least because her compositional legacy at the Cologne Musikhochschule is available to all interested researchers and musicians and has led to new editions or first recordings of her compositions.

”It was an exciting and challenging process to record the complex structure of 24 études and préludes. Some of the etudes belong to the most difficult pieces in piano literature, and the préludes have intense musical potential. I decided to record the pieces over a short period of time, in order to keep the spontaneity of the interpretation. I am very thankful to the Teldex Team (René Möller and Jakob Bötcher) and the piano technician Gerd Finkenstein for sharing this musical experience together, and creating an exciting recording.“

There are plenty of legends about great composers and famous musicians, including examples of musical duels such as the one between the young George Frideric Handel and Domenico Scarlatti in Rome in 1709 or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Muzio Clementi in Vienna in 1781. The participants were to compete in the art of improvisation or to demonstrate their musical skills in an appropriate way.The present programme refers to a competition between the two keyboard virtuosos and composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Louis Marchand, which is said to have taken place in Dresden in 1717. Several sources mention this planned competition, although they all come from the German-speaking world. A total of 21 texts, dated between 1739 and 1802, mention the planned encounter between Bach and Marchand, but all of these surviving sources should be treated with caution, and many of them undoubtedly serve to glorify Bach and assert his superiority over his French challenger, who recognised this and which is why the contest is said never to have taken place. The starting point and main source for this story is Johann Sebastian Bach personally.

"Oh, do it Clara darling!" said Robert Schumann to his bride Clara, strongly encouraging her to pursue composing. Although the pianist had always composed, when she married in 1840 - without being asked to - she was immediately willing to dispense with this part of her musical output: "A woman does not have to desire to compose - so far not one has been able to do so; should that be what I am destined to do?" Clara is caught up in a crisis and feels resigned: "But I cannot compose … I lack all talent for it".
