A supergroup of rock, pop, and world music heavyweights, SuperHeavy feature Rolling Stones icon Mick Jagger and neo-soulster Joss Stone along with guitarist/producer Dave Stewart, reggae artist Damian Marley, and Indian musician/composer A.R. Rahman. Formed around 2009 as a result of Stewart and Jagger's mutual love for Indian orchestral music as well as the music Stewart heard in his adopted home of St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, SuperHeavy began experimenting on tracks backed by Marley's touring rhythm section. In 2011, SuperHeavy released their debut self-titled album, featuring the reggae single "Miracle Worker" and the Rahman-composed cut "Satyameva Jayathe."

Native Wisdom: World Music Of The Spirit collects music from all over the globe in an attempt to offer an introduction to world music. Though any effort like this is bound to be incomplete, the album does indeed offer an effective introduction to broad array of musics. Neophyte listeners would be well-served by the collection, since it lets them sample a variety of styles.

When South Africa was still suffering under the apartheid system in the 1980s, Johnny Clegg & Savuka was the last thing apartheid supporters wanted in a pop group. Their lyrics were often vehemently anti-apartheid, and apartheid supporters hated the fact that a half-black, half-white outfit out of South Africa was integrated and proud of it. Released in the U.S. at the end of the 1980s, Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World is among the many rewarding albums the band has recorded. Sting and the Police are a definite influence on Clegg & Savuka, who have absorbed everything from various African pop styles to Western pop, funk, rock, and reggae. The lyrics are consistently substantial and frequently sociopolitical – "Bombs Away" addresses the violence of the apartheid regime, while "Warsaw 1943" reflects on the horrors Eastern Europe experienced at the hands of both communists and fascists during World War II. Clegg and company enjoyed a passionate following at the time, and this fine CD proves that it was well deserved.
