Raphaela Gromes from Munich is a highly virtuoso cellist who immediately seduces her audience with her personality, charisma and a certain magic. She received her earliest artistic training from her parents, both cellists themselves, with whom she had her first taste of the stage at the age of seven. She attended masterclasses with renowned cellists such as David Geringas, Natalia Gutman and Yo-Yo Ma. The young musician likes to tread unusual repertoire paths - and at the highest level: the Süddeutsche Zeitung attested to her "beauty of sound and poetry", the Neue Zürcher Zeitung "diabolical acrobatics and an infectious love of music-making".

Originally, it was a four-hand piano work composed by Maurice Ravel for the son and daughter of friends - inspired by Charles Perrault's collection of fairy tales "My Mother the Goose". When the time came, however, the two children did not dare to give the first performance. Ma mère l'oye" was not quite so simple and small after all. The piano piece later became an orchestral work and even a ballet. Florian Heurich talked to conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin about the work - and about the child's soul that adults need for this music.

For years the star cellist and Opus Klassik laureate Raphaela Gromes has taken up the cause of women composers. Three of her albums, acclaimed by critics and listeners alike, have featured music by unknown women composers, and she maintains a long-term working relationship with the “Frau und Musik” Archive in Frankfurt. So it is only natural that her new double album, FEMMES, should lend a voice to outstanding women from nine centuries of music history. No fewer than 23 woman composers found their way onto the double album, from Hildegard of Bingen to Clara Schumann all the way to Lera Auerbach and Billie Eilish, not to mention such famous operatic figures as Susanna from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro or Bizet’s Carmen.

On 20 June 1819, 200 years ago, the famous composer Jaques Offenbach was born in Cologne as "Jakob" Offenbach. The young cellist Raphaela Gromes, who already received excellent reviews and even celebrated chart successes with her first two albums for Sony Classical, has come up with a very special Offenbach album for the anniversary, having already presented Offenbach's "Hommage à Rossini" in a highly praised premiere recording on her last Rossini album. For, before Offenbach was acclaimed in musical theatre, he himself had a great career as a cellist and was even celebrated throughout Europe as the "Liszt of the cello"
