One of the first Australian bands to find widespread commercial success in America, Little River Band brought a polished, vocal-heavy pop sound to the late-'70s airwaves, melding the rich harmonies of the Eagles and Crosby, Stills & Nash with a bit of AOR drive and soft rock melodicism. Staffed by a crew of previously distinguished veterans of Melbourne's vibrant rock scene, the group's sights were already set on American shores by the time of their 1975 formation, and within two years, they had achieved their breakthrough with 1977's gold-selling Diamantina Cocktail, followed quickly by Sleeper Catcher and its Top Ten hits "Lady" and "Reminiscing." Their acceptance in the U.S. was mirrored and subsequently exceeded by their prominence back home, and they headed confidently into the '80s with a string of hit albums and an international reputation.

Lemon's 2013 two-fer combines the original Australian versions of two early albums by Little River Band: 1976's "After Hours" and 1977's "Diamantina Cocktail". These are respectively their 2nd and 3rd records, and on "After Hours", it's possible to hear how tentative Little River Band are. They flit between pub-friendly country-rock and sentimental folk, dabble in jazzy runs as they ramp up rock & roll rhythms ("Take Me Home"), pound home a horn-fueled pop/rocker in the vein of Chicago ("Everyday of My Life"), even stretch out into something that feels like inadvertent proto-prog ("Another Runaway," whose chorus uncannily mirrors that of Pink Floyd's later "Comfortably Numb"). Any hint of the well-known soft rock slickness that is missing on "After Hours" can be heard on "Diamantina Cocktail", which opens with their first big hit "Help Is on Its Way" and also includes "Happy Anniversary," two signs that they've moved toward their shiny signature.

An Australian sextet, Little River Band's debut album sounds as American as anything by the Eagles or the Doobie Brothers, and is driven by "It's a Long Way There" - whose eight and a half minutes of crunchy electric guitars, luminous acoustic guitar, and smooth harmonizing is spread across a musically dramatic arc that is worth every second of its running time. This is an astonishingly strong debut album. There aren't any surprises, just seven more eminently enjoyable if slightly looser structured mainstream rock songs in the same vein, inventive where they had to be (like on the solos or the variations on the extended choruses), all more modestly proportioned than the hit and thoroughly enjoyable…

Formed in Melbourne in 1975, Little River Band featured Glenn Shorrock on vocals, Beeb Birtles, Graham Davidge and Graeham Goble on guitars, Dave Orams on bass and Derek Pellici on drums. Three of the members previously officiated under the name Mississippi before adopting this new baptismal name, found on the road leading to their first concert, when they saw a sign indicating the locality of Little River. This new name also consists of a nod to the previous one. A few weeks later, Little River planned to release her first track, a rereading of "When Will I be Loved" by The Everly Brothers before retracting on learning that Linda Ronstadt would be releasing her own version at the same time.

Greatest Hits is a 1982 compilation of hits by the Australian band Little River Band. The album was digitally remastered and repackaged with six additional tracks in an expanded edition in 2000.
Australia's Little River Band was one of the most successful groups to emerge from down under. With the perfect sound via Glenn Shorrock's relaxed voice alongside the smooth flow of the guitar and keyboard work, LRB's polished style was draped all over radio throughout the late '70s and early '80s. This compilation from their most lucrative years contains all their chart hits, plus the sneaky-sounding "Down on the Border"…
