The ambitious Swiss electronic duo Yello comprised vocalist/conceptualist Dieter Meier – a millionaire industrialist, professional gambler, and member of Switzerland's national golf team – and composer/arranger Boris Blank. Meier, a former solo artist who also spent time with the group Fresh Colour, began collaborating with Blank in 1979, and the duo bowed with the single "I.T. Splash." After signing with the Residents' label, Ralph Records, Yello issued their 1980 debut LP, Solid Pleasure, which spawned the dance hit "Bostitch."

With 1981's Claro Que Si, Yello made its first forays into music video; their clip for the single "Pinball Cha Cha," directed by Meier, garnered considerable acclaim and in 1985 was selected as one of 32 works included in the Museum of Modern Art's Music Video Exhibition. Visual accompaniment remained a pivotal component of the duo's work after they signed to Elektra in 1983 for the LP You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess, as the videos for "I Love You" and "Lost and Found" received heavy airplay on MTV.

1985's Stella proved to be Yello's commercial breakthrough: while the singles and videos "Desire" and "Vicious Games" found success upon their initial release, the duo enjoyed a delayed hit with the album track "Oh Yeah," which reached the U.S. singles chart after being prominently featured in the films Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Secret of My Success. After the remix project 1980-1985: The New Mix in Go, Yello recruited diva Shirley Bassey and ex-Associate Billy McKenzie for 1987's One Second.

Despite the success of 1988's Flag, which contained the international hit "The Race," over the course of the next several years Yello grew increasingly involved with film projects: after scoring the comedy Nuns on the Run, Meier directed his own feature, 1990's Snowball. In 1991, the duo resurfaced with Baby, followed three years later by Zebra. 1995's Hands on Yello compiled reinterpretations of the group's songs by the likes of Moby, the Orb, and the Grid, while Pocket Universe, a collection of new material, appeared in 1997.

The quirky synthesized noises of Swiss duo Yello have been dance club staples since the early '80s. Early recordings such as Solid Pleasure and You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess were experimental but tuneful synth-pop experiments, combining Dieter Meier's bizarre vocals and Boris Blank's gurgling synthesizer effects to create distinctive, strange, yet compelling dancefloor anthems like "Bostich" and "I Love You." By the mid-'80s, Yello began to incorporate Latin rhythms into its sound, finding a larger U.S. audience along the way; the immortal "Oh Yeah," by far the duo's most recognizable song after being featured in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Secret of My Success, and countless commercials, even crossed over to the U.S. pop chart in 1987. By the 1990s, Yello was still churning out a number of albums; though the experimental synth effects had long become passé and Yello was becoming more mainstream, Blank and Meier continued to find success throughout the world, even though U.S. success was limited to the dancefloor. 1993's Zebra found Yello continuing with its signature sound of combining Latin rhythms, Meier's distinctive vocal approach, and contemporary dancefloor tastes. Yello began to incorporate house music into its sound; the energetic single "Do It" exemplifies this approach. Yello's sense of humor is still intact on Zebra, especially on the faux-Latin-jazz tune "How How." "Tremendous Pain" and "Move Dance Be Born" are also effective dancefloor fillers.

Despite its high points, Zebra (as with most of Yello's later recordings) lacks the daring and adventurous nature of the duo's early output. Zebra certainly isn't lacking in quality, nor is it a bad album. But Zebra continues a trend that began with Yello's 1985 release Stella; as Yello's sound became more commercial, it also became predictable. Zebra is a pleasant listen and it proves Yello has been able to incorporate contemporary dance music trends into its sound. And therein lies the problem. Yello's early albums influenced those trends; by the time of Zebra's release, Yello was struggling to keep up. Most synthesized acts would be lucky to release an album as good as Zebra, but compared to Yello's influential, trend-setting early-'80s output, Zebra just doesn't measure up.

Yello - Albums & Singles Collection: 1994-2016 (12CD + DVD5) [Re-Up]

Yello - Hands On Yello (1995)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 442 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 156 Mb
Label: Motor Music GmbH | # 527 313-2 | Time: 01:08:07 | Scans ~ 101 Mb

To symbolise Yello's move to more dance orientated music (which is very apparent in their later albums such as Zebra and Pocket Universe), the Swiss Duo invited the cream of the dance music scene to remix some of their tracks. This remix project became HANDS ON YELLO.

I had never really bothered with Yello. I had heard the song "Oh Yeah" (who hasn't?), and I loved "The Race", but other than that I had never really taken the time to listen to their albums. And then, when Jam & Spoon released their "Hands on Yello - You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess: Great Mission" CD single in 1995 (I first heard about it by watching the music video one late Friday night on MTV) I became hooked. When I found out that this was one track from an album featuring remixes by Moby, The Orb, The Grid and others, I had to get it. I'm glad I did; I enjoyed the album so much that I just HAD to start tracking down the original albums, and that was how I became a big fan of Yello.

So, more about this album. Well, each of the artists who appear on HANDS ON YELLO were influenced by Yello at some point in their career, and each artist was asked to choose their "favourite song" to remix. What follows is a very strange fusion of classic Yello tracks with driving techno hard beats or ambient swirls. Sounds weird? It is, but it also WORKS.

Some die-hard Yello fans may be unimpressed (a lot of Yello's humour is lost in the remixes), just as some die-hard Yello fans will not be able to resist the temptation to hear their favourite songs remixed by techno experts like Moby and Jam & Spoon (and Ambient House pioneers The Orb), but on the whole, I believe this album is a pure delight. Imagine L'Hotel as a pounding progressive techno track. You can't can you? Yet, Carl Craig pulls it off. Oliver Lieb's remix of Crash Dance is truly superb, as is The Grid's take on Vicious Games, slowing things down for a slightly ambient feel. Moby's remix of Lost Again is breathtaking; another slow, thoughtful track, Moby's music really accentuates the pain in Dieter Meier's gravally voice.

For fans of mid-90's dance music this is truly indespensible, and a great introduction to Yello for those technoheads who might not otherwise have tried to listen to their highly original and influential music.

Yello has been chugging along consistently ever since their debut on Ralph Records with Solid Pleasure. They have been setting the standard for audio mixing and production ever since. This recording moves into some new territory for Yello with regard to composition, but the production is mind-boggling. They just keep getting better at producing sounds that vibrate holographically. This is a great recording for newcomers to the group. Lots of seductive high energy dance grooves and lots of different moods…..and a sense of humor!

Yello - Albums & Singles Collection: 1994-2016 (12CD + DVD5) [Re-Up]

Yello - Eccentrix Remixes (1999)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 401 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 146 Mb
Label: Mercury | # 538 584-2 | Time: 01:03:58 | Scans ~ 59 Mb

This timely release should really have been called Yello 1986-1998 The Second Mix in One Go. With only 11 tracks it is considerably less substantial than its predecessor - but make no mistake - Yello Eccentrix Remixes is a top album and belongs in every CD collection.

The album is a compilation of old and new material and consists of 2 previously unreleased mixes of the hits The Race [Flag] and More [Pocket Universe] by Boris Blank, a previously unreleased track, Topaz, as well as 8 `hard to get hold of' remixes of slightly older Yello material by Boris Blank, Fluke, Plutone, Mark Picchiotti, Teri Bristol, Doug Laurent, Olaf Wollschlager and Ian Pooley.

Boris Blank's remixes are a rare treat, and for those connoisseurs out there who feel that Yello started loosing the touch after Baby (1991) the `Break Light Mix' of The Race sees Boris back in his best 1980s years. This mix is on par with the original full length version, released 1988, as well as Derek May's legendary `The Pits Mix' of the same year. The `Rockabilly Mix' of More and the new track Topaz continue the deeper techno sound of Pocket Universe and should absolutely not be missed. Fluke's version of How How [Zebra] sounds as radical today as when it was first released in 1994. This unmistakable Fluke retouch transforms the rather mediocre original How How to new rhythmic heights (compare this version of How How with Fluke's Atomix 5 of Atom Bomb, 1996 - the beat is almost uncomfortably similar).

Other highlights are Doug Laurent's romantic journey mix of On Track [Pocket Universe] and the serene To the Sea [Pocket Universe] with Stina Nordenstam on the vocals. If you have ever wondered what a house version of Vicious Games [Stella] would sound like, try the Blank/Wollschlager mix. This version is a definite improvement to The Grid's two ambient `Hands on' remixes, but the new vocals by Diana Boge are a far cry from the chilling voice of Rush Winters.

My only real reservation concerns the choice of including Plutone's `In Silence Mix' of How How from The Plutone Mixes (1994) which is superfluous and comes across as the weakest track - especially in comparison with the Fluke remix. I always felt Plutone made a better job at capturing the Yello sound with the Drummer's and Saxophone versions. Instead of this track I would have preferred a new Boris Blank remix of a classic like Tremendous Pain (Suite 904), Blender, Dr Van Steiner, Tied Up, Domingo or the like.

Unfortunately this is not a US release and the album is only available on special import which takes a few weeks - but it is well worth the extra wait. For those of you who wish to cover the very best of Yello or just indulge in an excellent techno/electronic album I strongly recommend Yello Eccentrix Remixes.

It's sometimes hard to get an idea of how great an album is with people throwing around 5 stars like they're nothing. In this instance 5 stars may not be enough.

Having owned nearly all of their releases and being a fan when they were a family of weird artists on the Ralph Records label, I've always expected to like 70% of the Yello album I purchase this one is at 99.9%.

I'm amazed at how this one outdistances the others in sound recording and complexity. Getting better with age

seems to be one of the most difficult things to accomplish in an artists career. I really didn't think it could get better than 'Baby'.

A few other reviewers mention that they have taken everything that worked in the past and integrated them with new sounds and grooves, this is very true. This album takes you on a tour through exotic locals much like 'flag'' while exposing you to rhythms of their worlds.

Yello - Albums & Singles Collection: 1994-2016 (12CD + DVD5) [Re-Up]

Yello - The Eye (2003)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 410 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 172 Mb
Label: Motor/Urban/Def Jem/Universal | # 986 586-3 | 01:00:40 | Scans included

Being a long-time Yello fan, I am always eager to absorb the latest work of the Swiss band, comprised of Boris Blank and Dieter Meier. Of course, those of us in America have to wait for the imported music to drift into the country, but the wait is usually more than worth it.

Classifying Yello into a music category is almost pointless, unless the category were "Yello." They have given fans everything from synthesized and sampled electronica to lyrical ballads, from dance/trance club themes to pure unabashed entertainment. Boris Blank's talent as a composer is the key to the richness of Yello's music, and his skill in engineering the finished product is unmatched. Many of Yello's music is "re-mixed" by a variety of engineers and the re-mixes always lack the life-blood that pumps and bubbles through Blank's work. The only exceptions would be, of course, those re-mixes done by Blank and/or Meier themselves. The counterpoint is provided by Meier's imaginative lyrics, some of which are little more than fragments of words twisted and contorted by Blank's design. Other lyrics can be as full as miniature stories or simply a few phrases inspired by Blank's framework.

The most important guide for a reader of this review would be this reviewer's opinion of other Yello work. Yello's best work to date is undoubtedly Stella, their fourth album published in 1985, which is the most consistently fluid and cohesive album Yello has ever fabricated, and included their most popular hit "Oh Yeah." Stella is seconded by the band's next album, One Second, which came out in 1987. Of course, the American printing of One Second jammed "Oh Yeah" between two songs on the side two due to the increasing popularity that same song received through Ferris Bueller's Day Off and other commercial and film spots. Can't trust my fellow Americans but to screw up something that was already perfect. If you are looking for the purer One Second, do not settle for anything less than an import that is without "Oh Yeah.".

1987 to 1997 brought several more albums which are enjoyable, but truly lack the complexity and charisma of the two mentioned above. 1997 saw the release of Pocket Universe, which easily claimed rank number three for Yello's albums produced to that point, but Pocket Universe had it's flaws. Most notable was Stina Nordenstam. Stina's vocals on the track "To The Sea" simply created a gaping chasm in the entire album. Unfortunately, that CD also includes a bonus track of the same awful song pitiably re-mixed by Steve B-Zet. Never should an artist include a second-hand re-mix on one of their own albums. The other flaw would have to be the track "Resistor" which is basically a re-mix of Yello On 45s, or Boris Blank combines all of his favorite samples into a trippingly fast dance track. How unimaginative and a waste of 7 minutes and 13 seconds.

The Eye marks one of their most successful albums in recent years. The success comes in the freshness of the work, the range of themes and moods presented, and tightness of the package as a whole. Every song is fresh and new, with a huge range of styles and moods, enough to satisfy any Yello fan. The Eye easily boots Pocket Universe out of the number three position. The album begins with it's fastest dance track, "Planet Dada", but quickly shifts gears to a more lyrical and atmospheric feel for the rest of the album. Rather than call out each track and highlight it's feel, let me just say that it is the smoothest and tightest album since One Second, maybe even closest to the completeness of Stella. Five tracks include the additional haunting vocals of Jade Davies, who provides some of the strongest vocals to grace a Yello album since Billie MacKenzie and Shirley Bassey in the old days.

The obvious comparison band of late would be Garbage, with their extreme engineering. Yet Garbage choked on their third album; compare that with Yello's eleventh to see where the true mastery and talent lies.

Those of us who have followed Yellow for 20+ years will no doubt recognize some rhythms and lyric repetitions resurfacing from other albums, but they are packed into a complete and fresh spice. The spice makes up for more than 95% of the album with perhaps 2-3% of recognizably familiar Yello. Any true Yello fan will not want to pass on this album, and any first-time Yello buyer should be pleased with this newest work.

An update: I've been listening to this album non-stop for about a week now and It now shares the #2 spot with One Second; this album really shows the best work Yello has produced in over a decade!

Yello - Albums & Singles Collection: 1994-2016 (12CD + DVD5) [Re-Up]

It makes perfect sense that Yello have lasted longer and aged better than any other synth pop outfit. When the Swiss group started out in 1979, the bandmembers were already older and wiser than most of their peers – singer Dieter Meier was already in his mid-thirties back then, and Touch Yello finds him a sultry, smoky-voiced sexagenarian. He has effectively become the Leonard Cohen of European electro-pop, with a touch of Paolo Conte's Continental class and maybe a dash of Serge Gainsbourg's genteel sleaze, and the comely female guest vocals that pop up throughout the album make for a perfect Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin kind of contrast. On what is only Yello's second album of the last ten years, the duo of Meier and synth wizard Boris Blank has taken a somewhat schizophrenic route; roughly half of Touch Yello is based around the kind of pulsating, electronic dance-pop grooves that have been the group's strength for three decades. On the other half, they venture too far into moody, downtempo pieces full of chillout atmospheres and bathtub jazz. By the end, one wishes the contributions of German trumpeter Till Bronner would have been left in trash can of Blank's laptop, as his parts take things entirely too close to smooth jazz territory. Thankfully, the funkier, more dance-oriented cuts where Meier's deep, dusky voice is right up front pretty much save the day. Listening to tracks like the disco-drenched "Part Love," where Meier comes across like some fever-dream combination of Barry White and the guy from Trio, it's hard to imagine why anyone would want to mess with such a winning formula. Still, when you've been around as long as Yello have, you should be allowed to take a few detours, even if some of them wind up leading you down the occasional blind alley.

Review by James Allen, Allmusic.com

Boris and Dieter have been evolving all these years. Still are, like the expanding heavens described in their cosmically themed "Pocket Universe". Their deliciously quirky, experimental, playful, sophisticated take on jazz-pop electronica fusion (as exemplified in their ubiquitous "Oh Yeah"), "Touch Yello" takes permanent residence in my glove box, constantly cycling amongst "Stella", "Baby" et al…and anything Kraftwerk. If you're looking to recreate a smoky jazz lounge filled with slick clientele, your fedora tilted to right with hot date's arm interlaced with yours, feed this disc to your player. Till Brönner breathing into a flugelhorn, Boris' electronic honey oozing from his brain, Dieter's worldly European flirtation through wispy images of female eye-candy rolling from his dusky, come hither voice, and an angelic Heidi Happy melt your worries away. Boris and Dieter's "Virtual Concert" (in .vob video format) is a succulent addition of skillful videography. When I grow up I want to be like these guys. Recommend.

2016 release from the Swiss electronic duo. Yello's thirteenth album - and first in nine years - is a super-smart, electronic smorgasbord of moods and styles from the liquid synths of it's lead-off single 'Limbo' to continental torch songs like 'Dark Side' and the shimmering Balearic sunset moods of 'Blue Biscuit'. Toy is nothing less than the unmistakable sound of Dieter Meier and Boris Blank gleefully working at the top of their game after nearly four decades making music together. This deluxe CD version of 'ToY' contains three bonus tracks.

Most North Americans seem to believe Yello's career began and ended with "Oh Yeah," the 1985 tune from their album Stella that became unavoidable in movies and television for years afterward. But the truth is, Yello have been a presence in international pop music since 1980, and with their 13th album, 2016's Toy, they've reminded us that they're still making smart, well-crafted, and politely subversive electronic pop more than three decades after their biggest hit. Stylistically, Toy doesn't sound radically different than the work Yello did in the '80s and '90s, though their touch has grown a bit lighter with time. These tunes are pop that exists somewhere between crisp EDM-influenced rhythms and witty ambient music. Boris Blank (who handles the group's music and production) moves back and forth from upbeat numbers with tuneful hooks and dance-friendly percussive effects to low-key soundscapes that, despite their playful edge, communicate a mood far more than a melody. Vocalist and lyricist Dieter Meier was 71 when Toy was released, but his gruff, smoky instrument fits the clean, polished surfaces of this music remarkably well, like Leonard Cohen's eccentric cousin from Switzerland. Toy wisely front-loads the catchier numbers, especially "Limbo," "Cold Flame" (featuring guest vocals from Malia), and "30,000 Days," while the set closes with more abstract and free-flowing tracks such as "Magma" and "Toy Square." Toy doesn't sound especially innovative, but it certainly demonstrates that Yello haven't been resting on their laurels, and at its best, the album applies new thinking in electronic pop with the melodic and production approaches that have always been part of Yello's music, for a set that's fresh but unmistakably their work.

Review by Mark Deming, Allmusic.com

Compared to the brutal utilitarian EDM of American dancefloors, there’s a sleek, stylish, timeless quality about Yello’s brand of electropop. Bookended by “Frau Tomium”, a bleep-tastic tribute to electronic pioneer Oskar Sala, Toy could have come from any time in Yello’s career, so resilient are their tropes. “Limbo” is exemplary, a light, punchy piece with Dieter Meier’s basso profundo murmur anchoring Boris Blank’s springy synthesised backdrop; while at the opposite extreme, Blank employs harp, synthetic woodwind and dramatic percussion for the atmospheric “Pacific AM”, a brilliantly evocative vista akin to gazing across an exotic jungle valley. Several guest singers augment Meier’s musings on mind and mortality, the best of which is “30,000 Days”, a classic Yello electro-noir Latin shuffle that finds him wondering, “I’m looking deep into my time – what have I done, and why?”. Good question.

Review by Andy Gill, Independent.co.uk

The peculiar Swiss electropop duo of Boris Blank and Dieter Maier have been operating since the late 70s, and have got around a bit since then: who else, for example, could have both featured in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and been remixed by Andrew Weatherall? On this showing, they’re just as weird and just as wonderful as ever. The first thing that’s noticeable is just how inventive Blank’s synth work still is: whether for floating sunrise ballads, darkly rippling ambient pieces or pumping glam-pop, his sounds bubble and blurt in super surprising ways. Meanwhile, despite being 71, Maier’s urbane persona is as funny, funky and disquieting as ever, and this album is a righteously fresh addition to their catalogue.
