This program brings together the work of three hugely significant alto saxophonists and composers whose musical aspirations were broader and more aspirational than their well know cannon of jazz tunes might reveal at first glance. Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and Oliver Nelson were all tied together in a “yearnin’” (to quote an Oliver Nelson tune title) to create primarily notated compositions with a large-view structure and scope, and to score these pieces for non-standard jazz instrumentations. The term “classical” doesn’t begin to describe these works as that work carries with it both a cultural bias towards European creators, but also because the expression in these works carries with it the essential hallmarks of black American musical expression that we value so much in jazz music, beyond just the improvisation part. The movement of “Third Stream” music which had a powerful focus at the Lenox School of Music in the late 1960’s as spearheaded by Gunther Schuller describes this impulse accurately, but also may not be inclusive enough for the range of works we are presenting here. This is large form aspirational music as created by leading composer/improvisers of African American music in the 1960’s.
