Harris and Turrentine work together so well on this soulful blues/bop date that one wishes they had teamed up much more often.

This is excellent soul-jazz session with Turrentine blowing hot. Turrentine recorded scores of albums in his lifetime, but this 1962 session remains one of his best.

The Allmusic review states "it's another fine, eclectic outing that falls squarely into the signature CTI fusion sound: smooth but not slick, accessible but not simplistic… All in all, Salt Song has dated well, partly because the arrangements don't overemphasize electric piano, but mostly on the strength of Turrentine's always-soulful playing".

Pianist Duke Pearson, while not appearing on the album, did produce half the songs (Byrd produced the other half) and served as arranger.
