This program brings together the work of three hugely significant alto saxophonists and composers whose musical aspirations were broader and more aspirational than their well know cannon of jazz tunes might reveal at first glance. Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and Oliver Nelson were all tied together in a “yearnin’” (to quote an Oliver Nelson tune title) to create primarily notated compositions with a large-view structure and scope, and to score these pieces for non-standard jazz instrumentations.
