Purbayan Chatterjee, one of India’s most celebrated and exploratory modern sitarists, and five-time GRAMMY Award-winning guitarist, composer, and producer Mark Lettieri (Snarky Puppy) have announced their collaborative debut album Feathered Creatures, set for release on June 5. Throughout the new project, the duo channel their masterful musicianship into a bold new sonic territory – forging a dynamic dialogue between progressive Indian classical sitar and electric guitar. Feathered Creatures is an artistic team-up crafting new and exciting sounds out of pure skillful collaboration, the result of true cross-continental creative kismet.

In 2025, T-SQUARE returned to their five-member band format. No Excuses – Grunge in Jazz is a concept album by Hungarian drummer and bandleader Bendegúz Varga — the culmination of a long-standing dialogue with the grunge genre. Having previously covered Chris Cornell and Soundgarden on Goldmund (2018) and Chasing Your Dreams (2023), Varga here devotes an entire record to the music of the Seattle movement of the early 1990s, reworking carefully chosen songs — iconic and obscure alike — in the language of modern mainstream jazz. The result transcends the cover-album format: through inventive arrangements and focused improvisation, the material becomes unmistakably the quartet's own.

Introducing "East is East", the latest album from Infusion Baroque. This fourth album from the Montreal-based ensemble is a fusion of Western Baroque, Persian and Indian music traditions. Featuring collaborators Amir Amiri, Hank Knox, Thibault Bertin-Maghit, Hamin Honari, Vidita Kanniks, and Shawn Mativetsky, the thirteen tracks see Western and Eastern musical traditions find common ground in transcultural music.In "Bergamasca" and "La Folia", baroque composers are realized with Persian santur, tombak, and daf alongside the Western harpsicord, violin, cello, and recorder.

For some players, Joe Zawinul is an influence; for others, he becomes part of their musical foundation. Paul Urbanek clearly belongs to the latter group. His connection to Zawinul’s world isn’t about copying licks, in fact this typical bebop approach would almost be impossible with Joe’s music. But rather what we have here is a more subtle, deeper absorption cultivated over decades. As an improviser myself, I can appreciate the time and dedication required to internalize this special language.
