This Was Then is the ninth full-length album by pianist/composer Erik Deutsch. His long-running NYC sextet has once again been enlisted to conjure their magic: Tony Mason on drums, Jeff Hill on bass, Avi Bortnick on drums, Mike McGinnis on Reeds, and Brian Drye on trombone; plus special guests Mauro Refosco on percussion and Victoria Reed on vocals. In between touring full time with The Black Crowes, piloting multiple projects, and recording with an incredible variety of artists, Deutsch has found the time to create an excellent new album of original material.

Rolf Kuhn's decades-long presence on the jazz scene was a stroke of luck and a gift. Rolf Kuhn was an exceptional artist, a German jazz musician of the highest caliber, one of the very few with international standing. Kuhn had no idea it would be his last recording when he met with his quartet at Berlin's Hansa Studio in late June 2022. In August that year he sadly passed away. His compositions, whether balladic or fast-paced and driving, always left room for what jazz meant to him: creating music together, letting it take flight through improvisation that thrived from listening and feeling.

Rembrandt Frerichs, Tony Overwater and Vinsent Planjer have been playing together in different projects and constellations for many years, returning to the basic shape of the trio every so often, as a balance point in their continuous development.
