Mapanta is a village-rooted electronic form emerging from Ga Skhukhune (formerly Ga Masha) in Limpopo, homeland of the Bapedi (Marota) people. Long before streaming platforms or clubs, Mapanta functioned as a social soundtrack, played at weddings, traditional celebrations, and youth gatherings. It is not a club genre in the conventional sense, but a living communal practice, music as social glue, ceremony, and collective release.

Matt Gold and Dustin Laurenzi present Devotional Fade, a collaborative record of electroacoustic rhythmic improvisations – equal parts meditation and dance, released on We Jazz Records, 24th April. Laurenzi and Gold, key collaborators in the Chicago creative scene and with genre spanning artists such as Bill Callahan and Makaya McCraven, step forward here with a major artistic statement, a product of extended improv sessions capturing the duo’s hypnotic interplay. This is the sound of two of Chicago’s most vibrant instrumental voices listening deeply, communing in sound.

Throughout, the harmonies are green and lush, and the melodies are plucked out of some perfect pop songbook, and there’s baroque, jangle pop, sensational production, DIY rough-and-readiness and all-in-all, we find ourselves bathing in the whole thing, thrilled that they’ve blessed us with an invite into their universe.

Swiss powerhouse The 18th Parallel presents another slice of fine modern roots reggae! All Fruits Ripe is a heavyweight showcase album rooted in the foundations of reggae while firmly anchored in the present. Recorded between 2015 and 2025, the project brings together a powerful lineup of Jamaican vocalists — Micah Shemaiah, Keith Rowe (from rocksteady duet Keith & Tex), Rod Taylor, Var (Inna De Yard, Pentateuch), Hezron, and Itral Ites — each representing a different generation of conscious reggae music. The album features six vocal cuts and five dub versions, highlighting both lyrical strength and sound system culture.

Vienna born London based saxophonist Guido Spannocchi has come to critical acclaim through his delicate tone and unique approach which combines jazz vocabulary and a heritage of upbringing with classical compositions. His output of original music on his own label have secured him sold out shows from Ronnie Scott's across the US to Senegal, from Vogue Tokyo Fashion week through Brazil, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Europe to the London Jazz Festival, if not on tour Spannocchi runs various regular nights in the British Metropolis.

It's usually just the collectors and obsessed fans that contend a band's first few singles are really their best work, far better than the material that ends up on their first album. With the French band Air, the collectors may just be right for once. Premiers Symptomes, a five-track EP boosted up to seven tracks for its eventual American issue on Astralwerks, features some of the most gorgeous moments in the duo's discography – no small task considering the gems included on their full-length debut, 1998's Moon Safari. Almost completely instrumental (except for the surprisingly smooth robot croon on "Le Soleil est Pres de Moi"), Premiers Symptomes offers a half-dozen tracks of beautiful, deliciously downtempo synth-pop. It's far more than just a compilation of substandard early material that works best for collectors, it takes its place right next to Moon Safari as another highlight of French electronica.

One of the early works of art created for the West by the Grandfather of World Music. This album stands as an early attempt to teach the curious western listener about the complexity and beauty of Indian music. Composer Alan Hovhaness provides some rather thorough liner notes describing the systems involved in Indian classical music (with the focus clearly on Hindustani forms), and goes into some detail on the finer points of the four ragas performed (Maru-Bihag, Bhimpalasi, Sindhi-Bhairavi, and Pancham-se-Gara, which is played during the piece titled "Dadra," actually a tala).

Known for her powerful vocals, dynamic stage presence, and diverse musical influences, LA-based soul and funk singer Nikka Costa returns from a musical career break with future-forward disco-inspired sounds on Dirty Disco.

Released in 1957 on Prestige Records, Walkin’ features a collection of songs that were originally released in 1954. With Davis on trumpet and as band leader, the recordings also feature Horace Silver, Lucky Thompson, J.J. Johnson, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke.
