C4 Photosynthesis and Related CO2 Concentrating Mechanisms by Agepati S. Raghavendra, Rowan F. Sage
English | PDF (True) | 2011 | 424 Pages | ISBN : 9048194067 | 15.1 MB

The C4 pathway of photosynthesis was discovered and characterized, more than four decades ago. Interest in C4 pathway has been sustained and has recently been boosted with the discovery of single-cell C4 photosynthesis and the successful introduction of key C4-cycle enzymes in important crops, such as rice. Further, cold-tolerant C4 plants are at the verge of intense exploitation as energy crops. Rapid and multidisciplinary progress in our understanding of C4 plants warrants a comprehensive documentation of the available literature. The book, which is a state-of-the-art overview of several basic and applied aspects of C4 plants, will not only provide a ready source of information but also triggers further research on C4 photosynthesis. Written by internationally acclaimed experts, it provides an authoritative source of progress made in our knowledge of C4 plants, with emphasis on physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biogeography, evolution, besides bioengineering C4 rice and biofuels. The book is an advanced level textbook for postgraduate students and a reference book for researchers in the areas of plant biology, cell biology, biotechnology, agronomy, horticulture, ecology and evolution.

Natural Growth Inhibitors and Phytohormones in Plants and Environment

Natural Growth Inhibitors and Phytohormones in Plants and Environment by Valentine I. Kefeli , Maria V. Kalevitch
English | PDF | 2003 | 331 Pages | ISBN : 1402010699 | 30.5 MB

This book represents the authors' lifetime dedication to the study of inhibitors and phytohormones as well as its practical applications for achieving a more sustainable agriculture. Their work focuses on the functions of various groups of active molecules, their direct effect upon plant growth, but also implications for their impact upon the surrounding environment are explored. The main idea of the book evolved from the need to determine a balance among natural growth inhibitors and phytohormones. This approach was pursued through a better understanding of their biochemical pathways, their effects on plants physiological functions, and their influence upon stress factors on plant ontogenesis.

Climate-Resilient Agriculture, Vol 2: Agro-Biotechnological Advancement for Crop Production by Mirza Hasanuzzaman
English | EPUB (True) | 2023 | 1003 Pages | ISBN : 3031374274 | 52.9 MB

Under ongoing climate change, natural and cultivated habitats of major food crops are being continuously disturbed. Such condition accelerates to impose stress effects like abiotic and biotic stressors. Drought, salinity, flood, cold, heat, heavy metals, metalloids, oxidants, irradiation etc. are important abiotic stresses; and diseases and infections caused by plant pathogens viz. fungal agents, bacteria and viruses are major biotic stresses. As a result, these harsh environments affect crop productivity and its biology in multiple complex paradigms. As stresses become the limiting factors for agricultural productivity and exert detrimental role on growth and yield of the crops, scientists and researchers are challenged to maintain global food security for a rising world population.

New Frontiers in Plant-Environment Interactions: Innovative Technologies and Developments by Tariq Aftab
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 571 Pages | ISBN : 3031437284 | 60.3 MB

This book provides information about plant–environment studies and challenges for plant improvement to achieve food security. Plants face a wide range of environmental challenges, which are expected to become more intense as a result of global climate change. Plant–environment interactions play an important role in the functioning of ecosystems. There are habitats throughout the world that present challenges to crop plants, such as through a lack of water and excessive, or toxic, salts in the soil. Soil properties represent a strong selection pressure for plant diversity and influence the structure of plant communities and participate to the generation and maintenance of biodiversity. Plant communities selected by environment grow by modifying soil physical, chemical, and biological properties, with consequent effects on survival and growth of plants. The complexity of plant–environment interactions has recently been studied by developing a trait-based approach in which responses and effects of plants on environment were quantified and modeled. This fundamental research on plant–environment interaction in ecosystems is essential to transpose knowledges of functional ecology to environmental management.

Basic Growth Analysis: Plant growth analysis for beginners

Basic Growth Analysis: Plant growth analysis for beginners by Roderick Hunt
English | PDF | 1990 | 119 Pages | ISBN : 0044453736 | 9.9 MB

This handbook is intended as an introductory guide to students at all levels on the principles and practice of plant growth analysis. Many have found this quantitative approach to be useful in the description and interpretation of the performance of whole plant systems grown under natural, semi-natural or controlled conditions. Most of the methods described require only simple experimental data and facilities. For the classical approach, GCSE biology and mathematics (or their equivalents) are the only theoretical backgrounds required. For the functional approach, a little calculus and statistical theory is needed. All of the topics regarding the quantitative basis of productivity recently introduced to the Biology A-level syllabus by the Joint Matriculation Board are covered. The booklet replaces my elementary Plant Growth Analysis (1978, London: Edward Arnold) which is now out of print. The presentation is very basic indeed; the opening pages give only essential outlines of the main issues. They are followed by brief, standardized accounts of each growth-analytical concept taken in turn. The illustrations deal more with the properties of well-grown material than with the effects of specific environmental changes, even though that is where much of the subject's interest lies. However, detailed references to the relevant parts of more com prehensive works appear throughout, and a later section on 'Inter relations' adds perspective. Some 'Questions and answers' may also help to show what topics will arise if the subject is pursued further.

Mangrove Dynamics and Management in North Brazil

Mangrove Dynamics and Management in North Brazil by Ulrich Saint-Paul, Horacio Schneider
English | PDF | 2010 | 395 Pages | ISBN : 3642134564 | 9 MB

Mangrove ecosystems are being increasingly threatened by human activities. Their biotic productivity supplies food and other resources to the human populations that inhabit or make use of them. This volume highlights the results of a ten-year German / Brazilian research project, called MADAM, in one of the largest continuous mangrove areas of the world, located in northern Brazil. Based on the analysis of the ecosystem dynamics, management strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of mangroves are presented and discussed. Beyond the scientific results, this book also provides guidelines for the development of international cooperation projects.
