The plains vizcacha (Lagostomus maximus) is a remarkable rodent of the Neotropic given several peculiar aspects of its biology, some of them quite unique among rodents or even among mammals. This book gathers specialists studying plains vizcachas from very different approaches, including paleontology, systematics, morphology, physiology, development and conservation. It is divided in two Parts, 1) Evolutionary History, and 2) Morphology, Development and Physiology. It will surely be a required reading for any researcher working with caviomorph rodents, mastozoology of the Neotropics or internal anatomy and physiology of mammals.

The introduction of rhesus macaques to Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico in 1938, and the subsequent development of the CPRC for biomedical research, continues its long history of stimulating studies in physical anthropology. The CPRC monkey colonies, and the precise demographic data on the derived skeletal collection in the Center’s Laboratory of Primate Morphology and Genetics (LPMG), provide rare opportunities for morphological, developmental, functional, genetic, and behavioral studies across the life span of rhesus macaques as a species, and as a primate model for humans. When we decided to organize an International Symposium dedicated to Professor Daudel, a question arose: on which themes should such a Symposium bear? After having reviewed all the themes on which P r o f ~ s s o r Daudel has worked during his long career, Imre Csizmadia and myself were somewhat at a loss; these themes ranged from Atomic Physics to Molecular Biology, with a stress on Theoretical Chemistry. Then I recalled a conversation I had in 1968, when I was in V a n c o u v e ~ with Harden McConnell, on leave from Stanford. I asked him why he had switched to Biology; he answered: "I'm often asked thiS question. But I don't feel I've ever switched to Biology. I have always been interdsted in molecules, just molecules: in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology". I felt this flash of wit would make a perfect title for a Symposium dedicated to Professor D a u ~ e l , who has also been interested in molecules in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, lIDt from a theoretical viewpoint.

The scientific subjects range therefore through the fundamentals of physics, solid -state properties, all branches of chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. In some of the essays, the authors consider relationships to more philosophic or artistic matters. In Science, every concept, question, conclusion, experimental result, method, theory or relationship is always open to reexamination. Molecules do exist! Nevertheless, there are serious questions about precise definition.

This handbook is intended as an introductory guide to students at all levels on the principles and practice of plant growth analysis. Many have found this quantitative approach to be useful in the description and interpretation of the performance of whole plant systems grown under natural, semi-natural or controlled conditions. Most of the methods described require only simple experimental data and facilities. For the classical approach, GCSE biology and mathematics (or their equivalents) are the only theoretical backgrounds required. For the functional approach, a little calculus and statistical theory is needed. All of the topics regarding the quantitative basis of productivity recently introduced to the Biology A-level syllabus by the Joint Matriculation Board are covered. The booklet replaces my elementary Plant Growth Analysis (1978, London: Edward Arnold) which is now out of print. The presentation is very basic indeed; the opening pages give only essential outlines of the main issues. They are followed by brief, standardized accounts of each growth-analytical concept taken in turn. The illustrations deal more with the properties of well-grown material than with the effects of specific environmental changes, even though that is where much of the subject's interest lies. However, detailed references to the relevant parts of more com­ prehensive works appear throughout, and a later section on 'Inter­ relations' adds perspective. Some 'Questions and answers' may also help to show what topics will arise if the subject is pursued further.
