In 1961, the Ark, a Cybertronian spacecraft carrying an invention capable of ending the war between the philanthropic Autobots and the malevolent Decepticons, crash lands on the far side of Earth's Moon. In the present, the Autobots assist the United States military in preventing conflicts around the globe. During a mission to Chernobyl, to investigate suspected alien technology, Optimus Prime – the valiant leader of the Autobots – finds a fuel cell from the Ark, discovering it had survived its journey from Cybertron. The Autobots are attacked by Shockwave, who manages to escape. After learning of the top-secret mission to the Moon, the Autobots travel there to explore the Ark. They discover a comatose Sentinel Prime – Optimus' predecessor as leader of the Autobots – and the Pillars he created as a means of establishing a Space Bridge between two points to teleport matter. After returning to Earth, Optimus uses the energy of his Matrix of Leadership to revive Sentinel Prime.

Meanwhile, Sam Witwicky is frustrated that he is unable to work with the Autobots and is failing to find a job. He also becomes envious of the close relationship between his new girlfriend, Carly Spencer, and her boss Dylan Gould. After finding work, Sam is provided information by his eccentric co-worker Jerry Wang about the Ark, before Jerry is assassinated by the Decepticon Laserbeak. Sam contacts the now-independently wealthy Seymour Simmons, and together they realize that the Decepticons and their leader, Megatron, are murdering people connected to the American and Russian space missions to the Ark. They locate two surviving Russian cosmonauts, who reveal satellite photos of hundreds of Pillars being stockpiled on the Moon. Sam realizes that the Decepticons raided the Ark long before the Autobots' mission and intentionally left Sentinel and five Pillars behind to lure the Autobots into a trap – Sentinel being the key to activating the Pillars and the Decepticons lacking the means to revive him. The Autobots rush to return Sentinel to their base for protection but Sentinel betrays them and kills the Autobot Ironhide, revealing he had made a deal with Megatron to ensure the survival of the Cybertronian race.

Sentinel uses the Pillars to transport hundreds of concealed Decepticons from the Moon to Earth, and Carly is captured by Gould, who is revealed to be in the service of the Decepticons. The Autobots are exiled from Earth at the demand of the Decepticons to avoid war, but as their ship leaves Earth it is destroyed by Megatron's second-in-command, Starscream, seemingly killing the Autobots. The Decepticons, led by Megatron and Sentinel, seize Chicago as their agents place Pillars around the world. Gould reveals to Carly that the Decepticons plan to transport their homeworld of Cybertron to the Milky Way, then to enslave humanity and use Earth's resources to rebuild their world. Sam teams with USAF Chief Robert Epps to go into Chicago to save Carly, but they are nearly killed by Decepticon forces before the Autobots intervene, revealing they concealed themselves during the launch of their ship to convince the Decepticons they were destroyed.

Who knew a government project could be built around secret and ulterior motives? It turns out such was just the case in the space race. Meanwhile, recent college grad Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) has a new girlfriend, Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), but not a new job. Despite his familiarity with the Autobots and his hero status, he can't find work and, to make matters worse, his parents (Julie White and Kevin Dunn) are coming to town and are sure to admonish his lack of employment. Fortunately, Carly's put in a good word for Sam, and her boss Dylan Gould (Patrick Dempsey) is all too happy to employ him. But there's never a dull moment in the life of Sam Witwicky, and sure enough the recent Autobot discovery of their former leader and the radically advanced pillars – not to mention a few other surprises coming Sam's way – just might work into a devious plot that could spell the end of mankind.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a tale of two movies. There's the slog of a first half and the dark, violent, exciting, and adrenaline-overloaded second half. The first half isn't a total waste. There's some critical back story, some necessary exposition, a few Transformers-standard action scenes, and several character introductions, but there's also a bit of unnecessary bad humor, a bit too much exposition, and what is sometimes an overwhelming listlessness that's more prone to put viewers to sleep than get their blood pumping into overdrive. That's countered by several scenes where things develop almost too fast and the visuals spin around almost too quickly. It definitely lacks balance, even if all of the first half seems, in essence, as if it is in and of itself a much larger counterbalance to the incessant action that defines the film's second half, for even in a movie like this two-plus hours of nonstop action would be too much. The core Transformers story as it is constructed and furthered here is quite involved, very interesting, and a pleasure to watch unfold, but it's slowed down and lessened by needlessly long stretches where only a sliver of information requires minutes upon minutes of random nothingness to become revealed. The pacing is further hindered by forced comic relief, but as noted it's nowhere near as nauseating or even offensive as it was in Revenge of the Fallen. It's almost as if someone high up on the Transformers food chain demanded the movie clock in at about 150 minutes, resulting in far too much stuff – on both ends of the movie – that just isn't necessary. That's really the movie's main problem in a nutshell. It's too much of just about everything.

Then there's the dizzying destruction and robot-on-robot slaughter that defines the second half. Who knew Transformers "bled?" There's a whole lot of "bloodshed" as Autobots and Decepticons shoot, stab, and rip one another to shreds. It's the ultimate showdown and takes place on an epically large scale. The second half is basically Transformers meets 2012. Buildings crumble and explode, people are killed by the hundreds, and general chaos reigns. It looks like some high dollar alien invasion movie, which ultimately it really is, but this is very well-produced and epically-apocalyptic stuff. It's as grim as a PG-13 rating permits, as hopeless as the imagination allows it to be, as physically fatiguing as a movie may make one feel. Dark of the Moon practically places audiences in the middle of one of the most chaotic hours of action movie ever created. The strict attention to detail is nothing short of startling, too. From the tiniest piece of background debris all the way to the realism that makes up the robots, there's absolutely nothing left to the imagination, save, of course, for the true level of human carnage and suffering that would most certainly be evident in such a situation. Nevertheless, it's all perfectly seamless. It's an awe-inspiring display of digital trickery and technological advancement, leaving audiences to wonder just how it could – and no doubt will – be topped in the future, not to mention the possibilities in different applications. It's at once both exciting and chilling to imagine. Michael Bay is at his personal best in this stretch, too. For as energetic and chaotic as the action may be, his camera seems to always be in just the right place, capturing the excitement in such a way as to only further enhance its effective assault on the senses. He may take a lot of flak – some of it maybe justified, some of it perhaps no so much – but there's absolutely no denying his pure skill as an Action filmmaker. Transformers: Dark of the Moon's final, extended Action scene will go down as one of the best ever created.

The common theme that runs through the movie, and that was alluded to above, is the absolute precision with which Michael Bay's vision of Transformers is brought to life. The movie is literally packed with breathtakingly gorgeous displays of technical wizardry that's so real, so convincing, that even Avatar should be in awe. Unfortunately, the movie more often than not moves by a little too fast and makes it difficult to truly appreciate the level of digital craftsmanship involved, but there are those few scenes where things slow down, the camera lingers on a robot, and the true scope of each one comes into focus. Battle damage, dents, scratches, and the intricacy of the moving internals never cease to amaze, and that these creations are so smoothly and naturally integrated into real-world environments is nothing short of breathtaking. That's held true through the whole series, but Dark of the Moon even manages to improve on the other two films in that regard. Otherwise, Dark of the Moon proves to be a rocky ride but ultimately one worth taking. The plot – when it's not taking far too long to reveal – is surprisingly good and there are several twists and turns that will take audiences off-guard. The acting is nothing special but is certainly adequate, though the performances of the film's primary and secondary characters – even by series newcomers like Patrick Dempsey, Alan Tudyk, John Malkovich, and the venerable Frances McDormand – are simply overshadowed by the digital effects. Not to worry, though, that's exactly what the movie should be: a parade of special effects that break new ground with every click of the mouse, every save to the hard drive. Ultimately, the big winner here is the audience. It's a relief that this entry bests its predecessor. It could have been better, sure, but this is a marked improvement over Revenge of the Fallen. Everyone now, a big sigh of relief, and in harmony, please.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon makes for one good-looking Blu-ray. Shot partially on film and partially on digital, different scenes feature different textures but the end results is a single pristine image that runs the entire course of the movie. The filmed segments feature a beautifully textured light grain structure that never fluctuates. The digital scenes are noiseless wonders that are smooth but neither flat nor devoid of detailing. In fact, there's never one shot in the movie that isn't perfectly detailed. Whether real or digital – human faces, clothes, rubble, intricate robotic pieces, frayed and broken metal objects, scratches and dents, or common little background elements like the texture of a brick wall or paint flaking off an old door – there's no shortage of glorious eye candy to be seen throughout. Colors, likewise, enjoy a natural vibrancy that's reserved for only the finest Blu-ray images. The red, yellow, silver, and other bright colors seen on cars that appear throughout the movie are nothing but a pleasure to behold; they couldn't look any shiner and true-to-life if they were being viewed in the real-world on the showroom floor. Flesh tones do take on a serious bronze shading, but such has been the case throughout the entire series. Black levels are absolutely flawless, too. No crush, no hint of gray, just solid and natural in every dark corner. Clarity is out-of-this world good, and there's a natural depth to the image, evident even without the added dimension for the 3D presentation. Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the pinnacle of Blu-ray video. Incorporating both film and digital, it's the best of both worlds and a reference-quality transfer for both mediums.

No surprise here. Transformers: Dark of the Moon delivers one of the finest lossless soundtracks ever to grace a Blu-ray disc. Paramount's Dolby TrueHD 7.1 presentation is a true champion. Every musical note, every sound effect, every line of dialogue is so pristine, so natural, that there's never a moment where the audience isn't completely immersed in Michael Bay's chaotic world. The movie begins with a heavy pulsating electronic sensation as the Paramount stars fly on by and through the screen. The clarity, separation, and precision spacing and maneuvering of each one is second to none, and the real fun hasn't yet begun. Music is impeccably rich and satisfying. Its frontal delivery is seamless across each main channel, supported by just the right level of surround speaker activity. Atmospherics are naturally immersive as well. Light rain and a clap of thunder play in the background during Sam's first scene in the movie. It'll leave listeners believing it's the real mccoy. Minor directional effects are startlingly effective, too. One scene features a robotic character throwing an object towards the screen, and then it rattles around upon impact right in the back-middle part of the soundstage, just one instance proving the utility of the additional surround speakers. Needless to say, however, the real treat comes during the action scenes. Goodness, when did home theater audio get this good? Transformers has never been about raw volume, and Dark of the Moon is no exception. The film and its soundtrack instead strive for accuracy, stability, naturalism, and immersion over absolute power. Sure the low end rattles and bass rumbles, but it's the spacing, clarity, and perfect maneuvering of each and every sound, no matter how prominent or how tiny and supportive in nature, that make this one a real success of sound engineering. Everything plays in absolute harmony together, and the result is action so immersive, so real, that every sound – whether familiar real world effects or make-believe robotic creaks, rattles, and rumbles – comes together to create what is one of the finest surround sound experiences of all time.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon bests Revenge of the Fallen in every way imaginable. The movie's first half threatens to bore the audience to death – there's just too much filler – but it's nothing but pure adrenaline the rest of the way. Bay responds to his critics with a movie that's more in-line with what the series promised to deliver in the first place: giant special effects robots doing battle, causing ungodly amounts of damage, and devastating theaters with some of the most immersive audio ever to accompany a motion picture. The movie is far from perfect, of course, but Bay took heed of the feedback and made a bigger, far more comically toned-down, but certainly not leaner picture. It's still excessive and too long at two and one-half hours, but it moves by very fast once the action begins to dominate the movie. Simply put, there's no greater example of 21st century special effects and movie spectacle as this. It's a very fun ride that's well worth taking, all its other flaws be damned. Paramount's Blu-ray release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon delivers flawless video and audio – did anyone expect less? – but no extras. An upcoming 3D re-release promises supplements, and fans on a budget will have to weigh their choices carefully. However, for those who don't want a 3D copy and who couldn't care less about extras, this disc is as good as it gets. All others would probably be best served with a rental and pre-ordering the bigger set once it appears on Amazon.

Il film è il terzo capitolo della serie cinematografica dedicata ai Transformers, iniziata con Transformers e Transformers - La vendetta del caduto.

Il film è uscito nelle sale italiane il 29 giugno, negli Stati Uniti invece è uscito il 28 giugno 2011, ed è stato il primo film in 3D della trilogia. Attualmente la pellicola si trova al 4º posto nella lista dei maggior incassi internazionali di sempre.

Durante la guerra che condusse Cybertron alla distruzione e alla sconfitta degli Autobot, una nave aliena riuscì a lasciare l'orbita del pianeta, ma fu attaccata da missili Decepticon; questo la portò a schiantarsi contro la Luna e a rimanere lì inerme con l'equipaggio morto. Dentro la nave aliena si celava la chiave degli Autobot per la vittoria della guerra, una tecnologia segreta conosciuta da pochi Autobot. L'evento fu notato dai radar e dai telescopi americani; ricevute le informazioni, il presidente John Fitzgerald Kennedy lanciò il programma Apollo, con l'obiettivo di mandare uomini sulla Luna entro cinque anni; Kennedy morì due anni dopo e ne passarono altri sei perché l'obiettivo fosse raggiunto. 20 luglio 1969. Per il resto del mondo l'obiettivo della missione era solo vincere la competizione pacifica con i Sovietici per il controllo dei cieli. Una volta che Buzz Aldrin e Neil Armstrong arrivarono sul corpo celeste, le comunicazioni si interruppero e tutti temettero per loro; in realtà era la seconda parte del piano voluto da Richard Nixon affinché durante l'allunaggio, nascosti a tutto il mondo, i due astronauti avessero il tempo di visitare il lato nascosto della luna, e scoprire cosa vi si era schiantato nel 1961. Aldrin e Armstrong trovarono più di quanto potessero immaginare: un'immensa astronave distrutta, popolata da un equipaggio di giganteschi robot morti. Come avevano giurato, come aveva ordinato Nixon in persona all'equipaggio e ai più alti responsabili della NASA, i soli a sapere la verità, gli astronauti avrebbero mantenuto per sempre il più assoluto segreto. La missione si era conclusa. Ma quello era solo l'inizio.

2010. In una missione a Chernobyl, il Nest trova un particolare dispositivo alieno che Optimus Prime identifica come "un pezzo del motore di un'astronave cybertroniana, l'Arca". Durante la ricognizione si manifesta Shockwave, il Decepticon che finora aveva governato Cybertron con tirannia come Governatore in assenza di Megatron, e il gigantesco robot tentacolare Driller, di cui è il padrone, che solo Shockwave è riuscito ad addomesticare. Optimus capisce quindi che gli umani erano a conoscenza di un segreto della loro razza e che non l'avevano condiviso. Arrabbiato per questo, Optimus pretende spiegazioni e apprende che Americani e russi cominciarono la corsa verso la Luna per raggiungere quell'oggetto misterioso che era in realtà la nave Arca; i russi presero il pezzo del motore che si era staccato ed era caduto sulla Terra, lo studiarono e, nulla sapendo della sua origine aliena, pensarono che fosse un avanzato dispositivo americano per produrre energia nucleare; lo misero a Chernobyl e, quando tentarono di usarlo come materiale fissile, provocarono il famoso disastro del 1986. Mentre Autobot e Nest se ne vanno, il diplomatico ucraino che li aveva guidati lì muore; viene ucciso da Laserbeak, un Decepticon al servizio di Soundwave che ha acquisito la forma di un condor; Laserbeak lo uccide perché l'ucraino era al servizio dei Decepticon, e ogni umano che ha lavorato per i Decepticon ora non serve più. Optimus e Ratchet conducono una missione per andare sul lato nascosto della Luna e, trovato il corpo di Sentinel Prime (predecessore e mentore di Optimus), decidono di portarlo sulla Terra. Scoprono anche 5 pilastri (un'invenzione dello stesso Sentinel) a bordo della nave aliena e se ne appropriano.

Intanto, Sam Witwicky ha terminato il college ed è alla ricerca del suo primo impiego; ha rotto con Michaela che lo ha lasciato, e ha conosciuto Carly, una ragazza inglese che era assunta alla Casa Bianca quando Sam ha ricevuto una medaglia da Barack Obama in una cerimonia privata; i due convivono a Washington con qualche problema, soprattutto Wheelie e Brains, un altro mini Decepticon scappato e passato dall'altra parte. Carly lavora per Dylan Gould, ricco uomo d'affari che la tratta in maniera molto intima con gran disappunto di Sam, e che ha raccomandato Sam per il suo lavoro; qui, mentre svolge un umile incarico, un dirigente lo perseguita sostenendo che alcuni umani lavorano per i Decepticon.

Es la secuela de Transformers y Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen y la última cinta de la trilogía de imagen real Transformers. Se estrenó el miércoles 29 de junio de 2011 en Real D 3D y en IMAX 3D. Su director, Michael Bay, afirmó que ésta sería su última película de la franquicia y el final de esta trilogía dirigida por él. Aunque el mismo aseguró que la saga podría ser continuada o reiniciada por cualquier director. Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson y John Turturro vuelven en el papel protagónico. Como novedad, en esta película se unen al reparto Patrick Dempsey y la modelo inglesa Rosie Huntington Whiteley, la cual sustituye a Megan Fox.

Dark of the Moon ha recaudado $1.1 billones alrededor del mundo, convirtiendose en la decima película en alcanzar la marca del billon de dolares. Además es la cuarta película mas taquillera de la historia del cine y a su vez la mas vista de la franquicia Transformers.

Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson et John Turturro reprennent leur rôles respectifs, avec Peter Cullen, la voix originale d'Optimus Prime et Hugo Weaving , celle de Mégatron. Ehren Kruger, ayant auparavant collaboré dans le scénario du film, est de nouveau impliqué.

Durant la grande guerre qui opposa les Autobots aux Decepticons sur Cybertron, l'Arche, commandée par Sentinel Prime, part de la planète, s'écrase sur la Lune dans les années 1960. Cet évènement influa sur la course à l'espace entre les États-Unis et l'Union Soviétique. Le 21 juillet 1969, lorsque la mission Apollo 11 arrive sur la Lune, les astronautes Neil Armstrong et Buzz Aldrin découvrent le vaisseau ainsi qu'une partie de la cargaison, sans trouver l'Autobot qui sommeille.

En 2011, les Autobots et les humains protègent la Terre des dangers la menaçant. Un jour, lors d'une mission en Ukraine, à la centrale thermonucléaire de Tchernobyl, le NEST découvre un réservoir de fusion, qui aurait causé la catastrophe nucléaire, ainsi que la présence de Decepticons. Optimus Prime comprend qu'il appartenait à l'Arche, le vaisseau caché sur la Lune. Il décide alors d'aller sur la Lune pour le retrouver et ramener Sentinel Prime, ancien leader des Autobots durant la guerre de Cybertron, avec la technologie qu'il transportait : des piliers capables de créer un pont spatial.

De son côté, Sam Witwicky essaie de vivre une vie normale avec Carly, sa nouvelle petite-amie, mais il s'ennuie avec l'absence de Bumblebee et ne parvient à décrocher qu'un poste au service courrier d'un grand cabinet d'assurances, alors que Carly est devenue l'assistante de Dylan Gould, un playboy multi-millionnaire qui lui fait bénéficier de ses largesses. Un jour, Sam est approché par un de ses collègues, Jerry Wang, qui l'informe de la machination des Décepticons sur la face cachée de la Lune avant de se faire tuer par Laserbeak. Quand Sam essaie d'en informer le NEST, il se heurte à Charlotte Mearing, chef des services secrets qui refuse de l'impliquer. Sam décide donc d'enquêter de son côté avec Seymour Simmons et Dutch, qui ont quitté l'armée. Ils découvrent des morts inexpliquées de personnes liées aux programmes spatiaux américains et russes et retrouvent la trace de cosmonautes russes. Ceux-ci leur montrent des clichés de la Lune où on voit des centaines de piliers. Sam comprend que les Décepticons ont tendu un piège aux Autobots en vidant l'Arche des piliers et que la clé du problème est Sentinel Prime, seul capable d'utiliser correctement le portail, et la véritable cible des Décepticons. Quand les Autobots l'apprennent, ils ramènent Sentinel aux quartiers du NEST, mais l'ancien chef Autobot révèle sa trahison : pendant la guerre, il avait pactisé avec Mégatron pour sauver Cybertron et comptait utiliser le portail pour mettre fin à la guerre. Optimus est dévasté et il ne peut qu'assister impuissant au retour de Mégatron, qui se terrait en Égypte, et à l'activation du portail et l'invasion des Decepticons cachés sur la Lune pour envahir la Terre.

Sam refuse d'abandonner, mais il doit également se plier à la volonté des Décepticons quand il découvre que Dylan Gould est allié à Megatron et qu'il tient Carly en otage. Sam est alors chargé de s'assurer que les Autobots quitteront la Terre sans condition à bord du Xathium ; il voit donc la navette d'Optimus décoller avant d'être détruite par Starscream. Sentinel et Mégatron ont désormais les mains libres et investissent Chicago avec Dylan Gould et les humains qui leur sont soumis pour faire de la ville une forteresse.

Transformers 3 (Originaltitel: Transformers: Dark of the Moon) ist ein US-amerikanischer Action- und Science-Fiction-Spielfilm aus dem Jahr 2011, der die Fortsetzung der Filme Transformers (2007) und Transformers – Die Rache (2009) darstellt und genau wie diese auf den gleichnamigen Spielzeugreihen des Herstellers Hasbro basiert. Regie führte abermals Michael Bay, die menschliche Hauptrolle wird wie schon in den beiden vorangegangenen Teilen von Shia LaBeouf verkörpert, neu dabei ist Rosie Huntington-Whiteley als weibliche Hauptdarstellerin. In Deutschland und den Vereinigten Staaten startete der Film am 29. Juni 2011 im Verleih von Paramount Pictures und DreamWorks SKG.

Unterstützt wurde die Produktion vom Spielzeughersteller Hasbro, den Streitkräften der USA und der NASA sowie zahlreichen Unternehmen, die im Gegenzug ihre Produkte mittels Product Placement im Film unterbringen konnten, darunter die Fahrzeugfabrikanten General Motors, Ferrari und die Daimler AG.

Begleitet wurde der Filmstart abermals von einer gigantischen Marketing-Kampagne, die neben den Hasbro-Spielzeugfiguren auch Comics, Bücher und Videospiele umfasste.

Es herrscht Krieg auf Cybertron. Der Autobot Sentinel Prime versucht in einem Raumschiff, der Ark, vom Planeten zu fliehen und hat dabei Technik zur Teleportation an Bord, die den Krieg zu Gunsten der Autobots hätte entscheiden können. Er wird jedoch von den Decepticons abgeschossen und taumelt antriebslos durchs Weltall. Im Jahr 1961 schlägt das Raumschiff auf der „dunklen Seite“ des Mondes auf. Der Aufschlag wird von den Menschen bemerkt und der Wettlauf ins All unter US-Präsident John F. Kennedy beginnt. Nach ihrer Landung im Jahr 1969 dringen die Astronauten Neil Armstrong und Buzz Aldrin als Teil der Apollo-11-Mission in einem Moment der Funkstille ins Raumschiff ein und stellen fest, dass die Menschheit nicht alleine ist.

In der Gegenwart sind die Autobots nach wie vor Teil des geheimen Bündnisses NEST und arbeiten mit den Streitkräften der USA zusammen. Auf einer Mission im Kernkraftwerk Tschernobyl entdeckt ein NEST-Team unter Lt. Col. Lennox und Optimus Prime eine unbekannte außerirdische Brennstoffzelle, die zur Katastrophe von Tschernobyl führte. Während sie versuchen, die Zelle sicherzustellen, taucht plötzlich der Decepticon Shockwave auf, der einen riesigen wurmähnlichen Roboter, den Driller, kontrolliert, jedoch letztlich von Optimus zum Rückzug gezwungen wird. Nachdem die Brennstoffzelle sichergestellt ist, identifiziert Optimus sie als Teil der Ark. Zunächst verärgert, dass die Menschen ihm wichtige Informationen vorenthalten haben, enthüllt er seinen Verbündeten und Charlotte Mearing, der Direktorin der Nationalen Nachrichtendienste, schließlich, dass sich an Bord des Raumschiffs eine wichtige Technologie zum Bau einer Weltraumbrücke befinde, und mit ihr der ehemalige Anführer der Autobots, Sentinel Prime, der als Einziger die Technologie beherrscht. Sogleich begeben sich Optimus und Ratchet mit der Xantium, dem Raumschiff, mit dem die Autobot-Verstärkung zur Erde gekommen war, auf den Mond. Dort bergen sie vier Pfeiler der Brücke, den dazugehörigen Kontrollpfeiler und Sentinel Prime selbst und bringen ihn zur Erde, wo Optimus ihn mit Hilfe der Matrix der Führerschaft reaktiviert.

Recovery Volumes (.rev)

Recovery volumes or .rev files are special files which can be created by WinRAR/RAR and allow you to reconstruct missing and damaged files in a volume set. They can
only be used with multi-volume archives.

This feature may be useful for backups or, for example, when you post a multivolume archive to a newsgroup and some of the subscribers did not receive some files. Reposting recovery volumes instead of usual volumes may reduce the total number of files to repost.

Each recovery volume is able to reconstruct one missing RAR volume. For example, if you have 30 volumes and 3 recovery volumes, you are able to reconstruct any 3 missing volumes. If the number of .rev files is less than a number of missing volumes, reconstructing is impossible. The total number of usual and recovery volumes must not exceed 255 and the number of recovery volumes must be less than the number of RAR volumes.

WinRAR reconstructs missing and damaged volumes either when clicking on .rev file, or when using rc command or automatically, if it cannot locate the next volume and finds the required number of .rev files when unpacking.

You may use the "Recovery volumes" option in the Archive name and parameters dialog or a similar option also appears in the Protect archive command to create recovery volumes. In the command line mode you may do it with -rv switch or rv command.

Original copies of damaged volumes are renamed to *.bad before reconstruction. For example, volname.part03.rar will be renamed to volname.part03.rar.bad.
