The lives of the residents of a small French town are changed when thousands of the recently dead inexplicably come back to life and try to integrate themselves into society that has changed for them.
Without warning the dead begin to return to life, appearing near their burial sites alive and healthy, and heading en masse towards their home towns. The event lasts for roughly two hours, returning an estimated 70 million people to life, all having died within the previous 10 years; more than 13,000 return in the film's unnamed city alone. Taking cues from the rest of the country and the U.N., the city's council and mayor (Victor Garrivier) make plans to house the returned and gradually help reintroduce them to their lives.
Reintroduction of the returned proves challenging, due to both the practical and emotional aspects. The returned also suffer from effects similar to those seen after a severe concussion, including lapses in awareness and connection with reality, further worsened by their universal inability to sleep and constant desire to wander. This causes them to perform sluggishly during their day jobs, but a small number of returned are observed having clandestine nighttime meetings with each other where their symptoms seem to vanish.
Un jour, les morts sortent des cimetières. Ils reviennent, intacts, par millions, parmi les vivants, partout dans le monde. Dans la ville française où se déroule le film, ils sont plusieurs milliers : enfant, époux, femme du maire…
Logistique de l'accueil de ces nouveaux venus, difficultés de leur réinsertion professionnelle et familiale, troubles devant l'étrangeté de ces « personnes revenues », selon le vocable officiel : loin de tout traitement gore, aux antipodes d'un film de zombies ou de morts-vivants classique, le film joue sur un climat d'inquiétude diffuse.
A priori semblables aux vivants « ordinaires », les revenants s'en distinguent par des différences qui apparaissent graduellement : leur température corporelle est plus basse de quatre à cinq degrés, permettant aux pouvoirs publics de les surveiller par des caméras thermiques aériennes, et ils sont plus lents.
