Il film è ambientato a Roma durante l'occupazione tedesca nella seconda guerra mondiale. Tre prigionieri di guerra, un americano, un inglese e un russo, fuggiti da un campo di prigionia dopo l'8 settembre 1943, sono ospitati a Romada Esperia, una giovane popolana che abita nel popoloso rione Ponte. Costei, che pratica la borsa nera, dapprima avrebbe voluto sbarazzarsi di loro per paura delle rappresaglie naziste contro i civili che aiutavano i militari nemici; in seguitò li aiuterà con maggiore consapevolezza anche grazie all'intervento del suo fidanzato Renato, antifascista militante. I soldati sono nascosti in un vano dell'abitazione di Esperia, a cui si accede per una porta segreta. Alcuni abitanti del quartiere (il dottor Costanzi, che cura l'americano, ferito a una gamba; il portiere dello stabile) sono a conoscenza della presenza dei fuggiaschi.

Un'imprudenza del sergente russo (esce dal nascondiglio per inseguire un tacchino scappato fuori) mette in pericolo la sicurezza del nascondiglio. La vigilia di Natale 1944 si attende l'arrivo di due partigiani appartenenti al gruppo di Renato incaricati di portar via i tre militari in una località più sicura. Il dottor Costanzi viene a sapere che i due partigiani sono stati uccisi dai tedeschi; il russo decide di rimanere in clandestinità con i partigiani per aiutarli nella costruzione di ordigni esplosivi. Giungono i tedeschi per arrestarli, dopo una denuncia di Tarcisio, una spia dei nazisti. Il soldato russo viene ucciso mentre gli altri due riescono a fuggire e a rifugiarsi dapprima in casa del principe Antoniani e poi, grazie all'aiuto del barone von Kleist, colonnello nazista ma cattolico e amico del principe, in un convento cattolico.

Dopo che la polizia nazista giunge anche in convento, su segnalazione di Tarcisio, il maggiore Pemberton riesce a sfuggire nuovamente alla retata; nel corso della fuga ritorna in casa di Esperia dove apprende che Renato è stato fucilato dai nazisti. Nel frattempo giunge Tarcisio, che ha una passione non ricambiata per Esperia, per convincerla a fuggire con lui a Venezia. Il maggiore inglese, che ha visto Tarcisio all'opera come spia dei nazisti, lo uccide. Esperia confessa in lacrime al maggiore che lei aveva tradito lui e Peter per salvare Renato. Le truppe alleate giungono a Roma salutate con gioia dalla popolazione.

L'ambientazione di Era notte a Roma è la stessa di Roma città aperta, il capolavoro di Rossellini. Era notte a Roma nacque come produzione internazionale, con attori di vari paesi i quali non si amalgamano molto bene gli uni con gli altri. La casa di produzione italiana era invece la "Golden Star", fondata dal padre gesuita Angelo Arpa. Riguardo alla resistenza, mentre la stampa di ispirazione comunista criticò la «visione clerico-centrica», Morandini scrisse che Rossellini aveva mostrato nel film la partecipazione veramente popolare della resistenza.

Dal punto di vista formale, Rossellini adotta il pancinor, un obiettivo fotografico di lunghezza focale variabile, antesignano dello zoom, che permette a Rossellini di poter fare riprese di lunga durata senza stacchi, allungando i tempi della recitazione e limitando al massimo il montaggio.

Known as the father of neorealism in Italian cinema, specifically due to his widely acclaimed masterpiece, Rome Open City – Roma, città aperta (1945), in this film director Roberto Rossellini continues his theme of personal human stories embedded in the rough realities of Italy during WWII.

Portraying a common phenomenon at the time by zooming in on a single representative story, Rossellini picks the period right after the September 8th 1943 declaration of the Armistice between Italy and the Allied armed forces who occupied the southern part of the country. During this period of transition, many Italians in the northern parts, still controlled by the Fascists, provided shelter to Allied POWs, even at the clear risk to their lives if caught.

The film tells the story of Esperia (Giovanna Ralli), a black marketeer that hides three soldiers (American, Brit and Russian) in her attic in Nazi occupied Rome. The soldiers develop deep relationships among themselves and their host despite the ongoing communication challenge, undoubtedly to show that helping the other doesn’t require much other than good will in the face of hardships.

Helping Esperia in her trying quest, is her boyfriend Renato (Renato Balducci) that continues with his reckless amorous lover portrayal he did two years earlier, in one of the emblematic masterpieces of the Italian comedy genre; Big Deal on Madonna Street – I Soliti Ignoti (Mario Monicelli – 1958). This typecasting for the sake of comic relief, I find works well here. The film boasts Rossellini’s signature rough black and white color template that reinforces his documentaristic style to convey people and events as they were. In fact, the film opens like a news bulletin with a voice over in English that sets the historical context for the plot.

And like in most Rossellini’s films, his brother Renzo Rossellini provides a score that offers a continuous tensed ambiance to support the immense risk Esperia took on herself constantly surrounded by invisible prying eyes that can abruptly compromise her safety and that of the soldiers. With all the craziness of war around us, I found it still amazing that despite all mankind achievements, the human brain can sometimes be so binarily wired; one or zero, black or white love or hate. I call for realignment.
