A thirtysomething single mother whose boundless potential was squandered through a series of failed relationships and a misguided effort to help her younger sister succeed in life finds the fruits of her labors finally coming together in director Christine Jeffs' dark family comedy. Back in high school, the future looked pretty bright for Rose Lorkowski (Amy Adams); not only was she the cheerleading captain, but she was also dating the star quarterback. Flash forward a little over a decade, and Rose is working overtime in hopes of getting her son into a better school. Her sister, Norah (Emily Blunt), is still living at home with their father, Joe (Alan Arkin), a failed salesman whose penchant for jumping into get-rich-quick schemes has left the family without a financial net to fall back on. Rose may be down, but she certainly isn't out, and when she hatches a plan to launch a crime-scene cleanup business, the money starts rolling in. Sure, cleaning up murder scenes and suicide sites may not be the most glamorous job in the world, but death is a fairly profitable business, and as the phone keeps ringing, Rose and Norah finally begin to experience the closeness of sisterhood that has eluded them all these years while also providing their family with true security.

Synopsis by Jason Buchanan, Allmovie.com

Sunshine Cleaning certainly has all the recognizable ingredients for a small, independent film: a dark comedy with a quirky, dysfunctional family spanning several generations who are involved in offbeat scenarios.

But that doesn't mean the result is not a sweet and appealing, if familiar, concoction. It puts the pieces together in new and interesting ways, as if a well-loved cake recipe were fashioned into unusual cookie shapes.

Amy Adams is the heart of the film as Rose Lorkowski, a gentle, likable lost soul. A single mother, she continues an affair with her high school sweetheart, Mac (Steve Zahn), though she knows it's going nowhere. It's a way of keeping in touch with her glory days, when she was the popular cheerleader and he was the handsome football captain.

Now he's a married police officer, and she's raising a rambunctious son and cleaning houses for a living. She stumbles on an unlikely but better-paying job opportunity and enlists her free-spirited sister, Norah (Emily Blunt), into joining her venture: cleaning up crime scenes.

They're the ones who mop up after the CSI folks have gone through with their fine-toothed combs and dazzling intuition.

Scrubbing up blood, guts and other effluvia doesn't sound like the ideal occupation for a pair of twentysomething sisters. But the money's good. "It's a growth industry," Rose is told. And as her financial picture grows rosier, she gains confidence.

With her soft, high voice and open-hearted face, Adams nails the role of an upbeat ex-cheerleader whose life has veered off track. We see layers to her character and newfound strength as her life takes unexpected turns.

Blunt also is excellent as a dreamy young woman with a cynical exterior. She deftly combines a sly sense of humor with a brusque but endearing honesty, both of which mask her vulnerability. Norah still lives at home with her dad, Joe (Alan Arkin). He is superb as a loving if distracted father and grandfather, whose failed get-rich-quick schemes never seem to dampen his enthusiasm. Rose's son, Oscar, is played by Jason Spevack, who avoids any cloying cuteness.

Dark humor intersperses with poignant moments. Though the conclusion feels forced, the movie works.

Light but not insubstantial, charming without being glib, Sunshine Cleaning is a heartfelt and funny story of complicated family dynamics and life's bizarre twists.
