Adapted from the best-selling novel by author Clare Allan, director Benjamin Ross' made for television drama follows the unlikely friendship between a psychiatric patient who lives to sponge off the system, and the newly arrived patient who causes her to question everything she ever thought she knew. N (Anna Maxwell Martin) has spent the last thirteen years living in a North London psychiatric ward, and she'd do it all over again if given the opportunity. She's made it her mission in life never to be released, and she's willing to do whatever it takes to remain institutionalized for life. Her life is changed forever with the sudden appearance of a new patient named Poppy Shakespeare (Naomie Harris), an elegant yet temperamental woman who insists that she isn't insane. But while N can't quite understand Poppy's reasons for wanting to escape the mental ward, she's more than happy to help her new friend try. The only problem now is that in order for Poppy to qualify for release, N must help prove that she's not insane… but how does one go about proving their sanity when in order to do so they must first appear to be mad?

Following her mother's suicide, N has been in and out of care most of her life, from foster care, through 'children looked after' services to mental health inpatient and outpatient services. Resolutely determined to remain an outpatient at a mental health day centre, her day-to-day existence is challenged by a new patient, Poppy Shakespeare… whilst all other outpatients are hell-bent on avoiding discharge, Poppy wants nothing else.

Skirting the line between stark realism and the heightened, farcical world of, say, Lindsay Anderson, Ross and Williams' film is a roller-coaster ride through a dystopian mental health care system in 21st century Britain. By not being explicit about the reasons for Poppy's apparently enforced attendance at the day centre, the cause and effect of mental illness diagnosis is blurred. By heightening the depiction of the care givers and mental health professionals to exaggerated, satirical degrees, the cycle of discharge-collapse-readmission-rehabilitation is distorted to nightmarish proportions.

Naomie Harris is great in the title role, charting the slow, distressing decline of someone determined to fight the system, but at the heart of Poppy Shakespeare lies an astonishing performance by Anna Maxwell Martin as N - she doesn't so much play her as 'be' her, creating a character so utterly believable and compelling that the viewer is both repelled and mesmerized in equal measure as we watch N deftly circumnavigate the system, always to her own advantage, always ensuring she remains within it.

On the whole, the film is emotional, weird, and occasionally beautiful. It’s painful watching these two women attempt to navigate a system that seems more interested in statistics than in the people it was designed to help. It’s not a groundbreaking film by any means and it doesn’t quite hit all its marks, but you’d have to be mental not to find something to like about “Poppy Shakespeare.”

Ever been afraid you’d accidentally get locked into a mental institution? After this you might.

Poppy Shakespeare is a times very funny, but it’s essentially a deeply tragic story. It’s a beautiful one too and there is no other way of telling it, so no comments there. What probably makes it powerful is that absolutely any viewer can relate to Poppy, and this could happen in almost any country, regardless of regime, or your age, race or sex.

I have to confess that I was really looking forward to watching Poppy Shakespeare, the TV adaptation of Clare Allan’s award-winning novel. It tells the story of two women, who find themselves in the same north London day ward of a psychiatric hospital. It starred Anna Maxwell Martin – who we saw a few weeks ago in White Girl – and Naomie Harris, who has notched up a few big-name US productions. A lot of press had labelled it as a British version of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, but I found it to be much more than that. It was sweet, sometimes difficult to watch, funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking.
