In this symbolic and philosophically weighty film, all of the inhabitants of a Portuguese mental asylum suffer from religious delusions of one kind or another – even the cynic who denies the value of any religions at all. One couple re-enacts the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden, and then the woman who played at being Eve plays at being St. Teresa de Avila. Another man thinks he's a character from a Dostoyevsky novel, and yet another claims to have in his possession a fifth gospel from the Bible. Everyone has a point of view and is not shy about stating it, defending it in debate with the others with great sincerity, though (the reviewers claimed) with very little elegance or wit.

The Divine Comedy / A Divina Comédia (1991) [Re-UP]

The story unfolds in our present days, in an insane asylum, where the inmates believe they are either characters out of the Bible or from literature. Adam and Eve, Jesus, Mary, Lazarus, and characters from Dostoievski - Raskolnikov and Sonia from "Crime and Punishment", and Ivan and Alyoska from "The Brothers Karamazov", are a few of those elected. All of the patients' discussions lead to a fundamental issue: does Resurrection exist, or not? More than on Dante's masterpiece, referred to ironically in the title, the script was constructed as from passages taken out of the Bible, and texts by Fiódor Dostoiévski, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Portuguese writer José Régio. Manoel de Oliveira, however, does make mention that Dante's masterpiece is present in his concepts of Good and Evil, implicit in the questioning of the characters. The film was awarded a Special Prize from the Jury at the Venice Film Festival and shown in the retrospective on the director at the 15th Mostra.
The Divine Comedy / A Divina Comédia (1991) [Re-UP]

This was my first contact, a few years ago, with the work of portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, and I was completely astonished. The movie is given to a lot of interpretations, and the way I see it, it presents in it several extremes of the kind of people that in fact exists in our society. The story takes place in an insane institution, where all the "clients" believe they are an historical character. So we have a couple who believes to be Adam and Eve, we have another who sees himself as Jesus, another one wants to die so he can return to life as Lazarus did. But the characters whose dialogues I enjoyed the most where the prophet and the philosopher.

The Divine Comedy / A Divina Comédia (1991) [Re-UP]

This one is a none believer who is always discussing with the prophet on the theme of god. The prophet spends the movie carrying a book which he says has the truth in it, it's like the fith gospel. In the end (and I saw that as the true message of the movie), we find out that the book is totally empty. Just blanke pages. If the mankind history was almost always made by wars in the basis of books which had supposed truths in it, and those wars caused a lot of pain in lots of people troughout the times, than we should write no longer. The true gospel is in the good actions, not in a book with written

things that can be interpreted in many ways, even lethal ways… Think about it… and watch the movie to help you.
IMDB Reviewer
The Divine Comedy / A Divina Comédia (1991) [Re-UP]

Like most of de Oliveirа's work, this film defies simple description. It is a successful attempt at modernist subtlety, structured with ease and a deep understanding of film language in its purist, most elemental form. In Divine Comedy, we follow the path of historical thought through the allegory of Dante's "Divine Comedy". The implicit presence throughout the film of Good and Evil, and sin and Virtue, firmly establishes the film's connection to Dante's concepts of Inferno. Purgatory, and the Paradise of our world. In the film's House of the Alienated Ones the characters cries-cross each other, haunted by obsessive ideas, hallucinations, and lucid thoughts.

The Divine Comedy / A Divina Comédia (1991) [Re-UP]

Many of the characters are reminiscent of biblical figures. Others resemble recognizable popular literary heros. In de Oliveira's highly original script, everything seems to be part of a parable. He has used a profoundly mystical, yet very personal style of story telling, rejecting the notion of a romanesque history as non-existent. His narrative addresses topics ranging from the original sin to chastisement, lust to sanctity, sincerity to hypocrisy, and dominance to submission. Through his vision, we witness the conflict of values that rule our vulnerable civilization, where everything is ultimately absorbed by the aura and anticipation of the Resurrection. The end result is a stylistic achievement of great intensity and depth.
