A Hong Kong cop named Kit busts a major gangster only to find his cover blown and his main witness gone. The gangster, in retaliation, has him kidnapped and put in a Thai jail with a false criminal identity. A lowly prison guard Chai with extraordinary fighting skills guards kit and prevents his escape from prison. The prison guard’s daughter suffers from a rare form of leukemia and Kit is the only donor who can save her. The prison guard discovers Kit’s real identity and helps him to escape in return for his agreeing to save his daughter. Together, Kit and Chai must face the gangster and his minions and take them down.

When I first watched the trailer for SPL2, I was not expecting much. Not just because the trailer was poorly edited, but because of the director's past filmography (Monkey King), and that two of the original three characters were not in it (Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung). After the first half hour, I was quite surprised because it's well written, well shot, and well acted. Then it got insane at the prison break scene. The scale of the film suddenly went from an indie production to a gigantic blockbuster (what?). That 6- minute, continuous, and uncut oner was extremely well done. Then the final battle when Tony Jaa and Wu Jin fights Zhang Jin was… *no words to describe*. Besides the writing, acting, and cinematography, the music was also well done. The music during the prison break was really unique, and playing Vivaldi at the last battle was… also unique. It also payed many homages to the original SPL. The theme from the 2005 film was played before the final battle starts, and Wu Jin carried a bag with him at the final battle just like what Donnie Yen did. A complaint that I have is the meanwhile… meanwhile… editing. I don't really like this style of editing, the film becomes less intense. But the film was still great. I haven't watch the new Terminator or Jurassic World movies yet, but SPL2 is a great example of how to pay homage to a classic.
