Habemus Papam (2011)

A story centered on the relationship between the newly elected Pope and his therapist..

Nanni Moretti’s ‘Habemus Papam (‘We Have a Pope’), the Italian filmmaker’s sombre and lightly amusing reconstruction of life behind the closed doors of the Vatican after the election of a reluctant Pope, can’t decide whether it’s a drama or a comedy, a satire or an affectionate critique. It’s gently funny at times and occasionally thoughtful, but overall it’s too limp and non-committal to satisfy or be persuasive as any of the above. Luckily, veteran French actor Michel Piccoli as the Pontiff in meltdown is a pleasure to watch even when Moretti’s script is unsure what to do with him.

Moretti is known for having a maudlin, soppy side even when making strong work (‘The Son’s Room’, ‘Dear Diary’), but we also know he has more teeth than he’s willing to bear here, and there’s a niggling feeling that once he’s behind the marble walls of the Holy See he goes native: the boldness of daring to enter such hallowed territory is the last bold move he makes. The early, sombre scenes as Moretti mixes footage from Pope John Paul II’s funeral with his own imagining of the Papal Conclave that follows are the strongest. There’s subtle, wry comedy here, too, as the Cardinals treat voting for the new Pope a bit like bingo and most of them pray silently to God that they won’t be chosen for the poisoned chalice of the top job.

But then the new Pope has a wobble and refuses to greet the crowd in St Peter’s Square or reveal his identity to the world. Moretti enters the frame as a top psychiatrist hired to deal with this crisis, but the potential for an intimate ‘Analyse His Holiness’ is lost as this element of the story is a non-starter: Moretti can’t treat someone whose identity he knows, so he sends him anonymously to see a colleague outside the Vatican walls.

The Pope takes his chance and does a runner, spending several days wandering the streets, speaking to a therapist, living in a hotel and taking interest in a theatre company he meets there, which revives memories of his failed attempts to be an actor in his youth. Meanwhile back in the Vatican, Moretti, who’s not allowed to leave, entertains the Cardinals by playing cards with them, sympathising with the Aussie brothers over their jetlag and setting up an inter-continental game of volleyball.

There’s some farce. There’s some soul-searching. There’s some comic absurdism. Moretti doesn’t say much about the Papacy at all, so there’s little here for the Vatican to worry about, and he absolutely avoids any direct or indirect comment on, say, contemporary theological issues or the overwhelming scandal of abuse in the church. He may question what it’s like to have such a public position as the Pope thrust on oneself (‘Who knows how he feels?’ asks Moretti’s shrink), but his film could just as well be about a monarch or similar once you remove the surface accoutrements of the Swiss Guards’ colourful uniforms and the marble of the Vatican apartments, all of which are reconstructed with convincing grandeur.

Piccoli brings a heavy, thinking sadness to his Pope that works, but his encounters in the city are dramatically weak and Moretti is not a filmmaker who can wrest ideas from observing a character’s face for as long as he does this one. What we end up with is a film of many elements to enjoy alone, but which together don’t justify the strong sense of final, devastating resolution in the final scene – a scene which Moretti must feel is a grand and powerful statement if the ponderous, clanging music is anything to go by.

Recovery Volumes (.rev)

Recovery volumes or .rev files are special files which can be created by WinRAR/RAR and allow you to reconstruct missing and damaged files in a volume set. They can
only be used with multi-volume archives.

This feature may be useful for backups or, for example, when you post a multivolume archive to a newsgroup and some of the subscribers did not receive some files. Reposting recovery volumes instead of usual volumes may reduce the total number of files to repost.

Each recovery volume is able to reconstruct one missing RAR volume. For example, if you have 30 volumes and 3 recovery volumes, you are able to reconstruct any 3 missing volumes. If the number of .rev files is less than a number of missing volumes, reconstructing is impossible. The total number of usual and recovery volumes must not exceed 255 and the number of recovery volumes must be less than the number of RAR volumes.

WinRAR reconstructs missing and damaged volumes either when clicking on .rev file, or when using rc command or automatically, if it cannot locate the next volume and finds the required number of .rev files when unpacking.

You may use the "Recovery volumes" option in the Archive name and parameters dialog or a similar option also appears in the Protect archive command to create recovery volumes. In the command line mode you may do it with -rv switch or rv command.

Original copies of damaged volumes are renamed to *.bad before reconstruction. For example, volname.part03.rar will be renamed to volname.part03.rar.bad.
