Caught at the Polish border with a faulty passport - some pages have been torn out - a sports hero nicknamed "Teddy Bear" finds himself in a desperate situation. He is not only left behind as his team goes ahead, but he realizes his wife has torn the pages out of his passport to keep him home while she goes to London to take the money out of their joint bank account. How can he stop her from making off with all that loot? Easy. He coerces a director to get a hasty script together for a film that requires himself and a double. The actor who plays the double then has to apply for a passport, and that is arranged through the interjection of a girlfriend. At the preplanned engagement celebrations, the double is slipped a barbituate and when he nods off, the real "Teddy Bear" takes off in a flash for the airport, with the assumed name of the double. The passport and its picture get him on the plane - where lo and behold - he runs into his ex-wife. Now the two of them are neck-and-neck in the run for the money, and new shenanigans have to be devised if either wants to arrive at the bank first - and alone.

Teddy Bear (1981)

If you lived in Poland during the 80's you will fully enjoy this movie. Every minute of it is making fun of the absurdity of life in those days. Although the scenes used in the movie might seem ridiculous, they are in fact taken straight from life, which makes them even more hilarious. The plot is a vehicle used to display the surroundings. The fact that this movie actually made it through the censorship shows, that although Poland was still in the Soviet block, it already had some degree of freedom of speech and expression in the early 80's right before the marshal law was declared. It's the best comedy I have ever seen and probably ever will see. It's a classic and a must see!

"Mis" (or "Teddy Bear" in English), directed by Stanislaw Bareja, is a hilarious comedy about people cheating each other every chance they can. To an extent, it is also about daily life in 1970s in Poland. Ryszard Ochucki (as played by Stanislaw Tym) discovers some pages of his passport are ripped out, preventing him from going to London where he keeps a bank account. He suspects his ex-wife damaged his passport so that she could withdraw the money first.

He tricks his new girlfriend into helping him get a new passport. She knew that he was cheated with his passport, so now she agrees to do the same in helping him get a new one. As part of their scheme, their friend (who makes films) does a search for a look-a-like, under the guise of staring in one of his films.

Teddy Bear (1981)

One of the funniest scenes in the film is when the filmmakers are shooting the "hunt" scene. Lacking a rabbit, they take a cat and put rabbit fur and ears on it. They release the cat and film the dogs casing the "rabbit" up a tree.

"Mis," made in 1981, is an entertaining 111-minute film poking fun at many situations in 1970s Poland. Understanding the historical and political climate of 1970s Poland makes the film even funnier, but is sure to be funny even with minimal knowledge of this. Additionally, as with any comedy in another language, some of the humor is lost in the subtitles. If you understand Polish, "Mis" is even funnier.
