A gumshoe private investigator is hired by a mysterious and malevolent client to find a missing crooner who owes him on a debt, but when the PI starts his investigation he is thwarted by the murders of his possible witnesses and haunted by unexplainable demonic nightmares. As he nears his catch, the identity of the missing person is closer to him than he thinks.

IMDB

Of all of the movies to come from the mid-80's few remain as disturbingly graphic or well put together as Angel Heart. The movie that single-handedly ended Lisa Bonet's Cosby Show career and elevated a young Mickey Rourke beyond simply appearing in SE Hinton adaptations. Expertly directed by Alan Parker, the cast is phenomenal and rarely will you see De Niro having so much fun in front of the camera. Everything about Angel Heart gels together to make a formidable movie that few other pictures during that same time frame were able to aspire to.

Angel Heart (1987)

Concerning Mickey Rourke as private detective Harold Angel. A hard boiled but laid-back gumshoe that is hired by a mysterious man to locate a missing person for bailing on a legally binding debt. Taking the case because of how easy it sounds, and overwhelmed by the funds made available to him by the man (De Niro) that hired him, Angel dives headlong into a plot that goes well beyond simple description. In fact to reveal too much would be a disservice to the movie from where I stand, except to say that it's superbly acted and plotted and easily still ranks as one in my top 50.

PQ on this is excellent. I've honestly never seen Angel Heart look as good as it does here. Details are very evident and clarity pops with well defined lines and accesnts on everything from costumes to the paint on the walls in each scene. The fine detail present in the actors' faces as well is phenomenal and I would be hard pressed to think of a catalog title this old that looks any better.

Audio isn't quite up to par with the video, but it's still good. Aeons better than the audio tracks on the last special edition SD DVD that came out for this flick. I have my sounds running out through a Vizio soundbar, though, so typically as long as the mastering is competent, i have few complaints. In this case there are a lot of effects on the sound, and I had no issues with detecting even the most subtle rustling noises. The music is good, too, and fitting for the era in which the movie takes place making no mistkae to dumb down the setting with an extremely moody noirish feel.

Angel Heart (1987)

Obviously, I loved Angel Heart… it's a movie that I've returned to many times in the past and will continue to do so now that it's seen its release on the superior blu-ray format. Definitely a title I wouldn't hesitate to give my highest recommendation!
