È sconfitto dall'armata di Crasso che fa crocifiggere seimila schiavi sulla via Appia. Come film di S. Kubrick è un ibrido: troppe paternità (lo sceneggiatore Dalton Trumbo e soprattutto il produttore-attore K. Douglas che in un primo tempo aveva ingaggiato il regista Anthony Mann) e una certa eterogeneità stilistica. È poco kubrickiano il richiamo a una nozione di progresso di cui la vicenda del “primo rivoluzionario della storia” è simbolica portatrice. Gli appartiene per le scene di battaglia e di violenza (cui collaborò il grafico Saul Bass), la mescolanza di ragione e passione nei personaggi principali, la splendida direzione degli attori tra cui spiccano L. Olivier e C. Laughton. È, comunque, il migliore – e il più adulto – dei colossi storici di Hollywood.
