John Moulder-Brown plays a teen-aged London bathhouse attendant who forms a business alliance with female attendant Jane Asher. The object is to obtain better tips from their clients, but soon the impressionable Moulder-Brown falls in love with the older Asher. Brushed off by the girl in favor of a handsome swimming instructor, Moulder-Brown makes several halfhearted attempts at revenge. When the boy and girl finally do get together sexually, the event is motivated by lust and has tragic results…

Sous ses apparences de comédie outrancière ou de joyeux bizutage, "Deep End" dissimule un drame cruel de l’adolescence qui navigue entre thriller psychologique et tragédie romantique. Avec un sens ahurissant de la composition plastique, Jerzy Skolimowski suit la déambulation d’un garçon hanté par l’image d’un amour insaisissable. Cette oeuvre au ton instable est une plongée frénétique dans l’East End, négatif sinistre du Swinging London qui invoque les ambiances de "Répulsion" de Roman Polanski ou "Blow-Up" de Michelangelo Antonioni. Traversé par la musique des seventies, de la folk-pop de Cat Stevens au rock expérimental du Groupe Can, "Deep End" est l’un des films emblématiques du cinéma indépendant.
