Garfield 2 : A Tail of Two Kitties (2006)

Nel 2004 l'esordio al cinema delle vicende tratte dalla serie creata da Jim Davis alla fine degli anni '70 aveva rinnovato la popolarità del gatto più ciccione e pigro del mondo fumettistico anche tra i giovanissimi. Allora Peter Hewitt aveva provato a trasporre su grande schermo le avventure di Garfield in un format che potesse attirare in sala un pubblico eterogeneo, con un cast di attori del tutto rispettabili - a partire da Bill Murray che dava la voce al gatto, in Italia doppiato da Fiorello - e una storia di quelle che divertono più i bambini che gli adulti.
Il cambio alla regia non ha modificato l'umore della prima prova su pellicola e anche gli attori che interpretano i personaggi principali - Jon Arbuckle/Breckin Meyer, Liz/Jennifer Love Hewitt, lo stesso Murray e persino Fiorello - sono rimasti gli stessi. Tim Hill li porta tutti a Londra dove si scopre che Garfield ha un sosia: un micione dai modi aristocratici (e con la voce di Tim Curry nella versione originale) che ha ereditato dalla padrona il castello di Carlyle e che deve salvare sé stesso e i suoi sudditi - gli animali della fattoria - dai progetti malefici di Lord Dargis (Billy Connolly), mirati alla successione ereditaria. Lo scambio di identità tra i due gatti è pressoché annunciato e il film fa ampio uso di tutti quegli elementi già utilizzati in abbondanza nelle cosiddette commedie degli equivoci, con un finale dichiarato: l'alleanza tra il rozzo felino americano e il principino inglese, la ribellione degli animali e la rivincita di Odie. Meno contagioso del precedente, e sempre più rivolto ai bambini, Garfield 2 contiene però dei momenti decisamente divertenti e delle trovate graziose, se pur non originali, come la lasagna fatta a più zampe nella cucina del palazzo reale, con Garfield come capo cuoco. I nostalgici continueranno a rimanere fedeli alla striscia a tre vignette, ma i nuovi adepti sapranno apprezzare la versione cinematografica che potrebbe avere anche altri seguiti.

In 2004, the debut film of the events from the series created by Jim Davis in the late '70s had renewed the popularity of fat and lazy cat most of the comics world even among the young. Then Peter Hewitt had tried to transpose on the big screen adventures of Garfield in a format that could attract a diverse audience in the hall, with a cast of entirely respectable - from Bill Murray, who gave voice to the cat, dubbed in Italy Fiorello - and a history of those who enjoy more children than adults.
The change in direction did not change the mood of the first test on film and even the actors playing the main characters - Jon Arbuckle / Breckin Meyer, Liz / Jennifer Love Hewitt, Murray and even the Beatles - have remained the same. Tim Hill brings them all to London where he discovers that Garfield has an impersonator: a micione mannered aristocrats (and the voice of Tim Curry in the original version) by the lady who inherited Castle Carlyle and must save himself and his subjects - the farm animals - from the projects of evil Lord Dargis (Billy Connolly), targeted to the inheritance. The exchange of identity between the two cats is virtually announced and the film makes extensive use of all elements already used in abundance in so-called comedy of errors, with a final stated: the alliance between the U.S. and crude feline prince English, Animal rebellion and revenge Odie. Less contagious before, and increasingly targeted at children, Garfield 2, however, contain moments are really funny and nice, if not original, like the lasagna made more legs in the kitchen of the royal palace, with Garfield as head chef. The nostalgia will continue to remain faithful to the strip three vignettes, but the new members will appreciate the film version, which may also have other followed.
