Dancing Girl of Izu may not be a flawless film, but on the whole it constitutes a harmonious collaboration between Gosho and Kawabata. Interested in literature throughout his life and buoyed by the film's critical and commercial success, Gosho would go on to make other literary adaptations. Some of these sould be regarded as among his best works. including his adaptation of Shiina Rinzo's novel Mujakina hitobito, which became Entotsu no mieru basho (Where Chimneys are Seen, 1953), and Higuchi Ichiyo's Takekurabe (Growing Up), which became the 1955 film of the same name. Other adaptations would be less successful. Indeed, at times Gosho's warm and sympathetic treatment, as well as his penchant for melodrama, clashed with the darker or more detached tone of the literature he was adaption. In Dancing Girl of Izu, howerver, this was not the case. Here his combination of melodrama, warmth, and sympathy served him well. It also served his audience, Shochiku Studio, Kawabata, and – last but not least – the new movement that he helped to launch, the junbungaku movement.
