Hawkwind - Friends And Relations - The Original Three Albums

Hawkwind - Friends And Relations
Space Rock | 1982 | mp3 320 kbps | 3 Albums | 84mb, 78mb, 73mb
The three original albums, containing tracks not currently available on CD

Back in the early eighties, Hawkwind were signed to the independant label Flicknife. They had the idea to release a set of albums that showcased some of the lesser-known bands that had links to the Hawks, either because they played at the same festivals (the friends) or they had shared musicians (the relations). To ensure we weren't plunged straight in at the deep end, each record would have a live side, featuring previously unheard versions of tracks from the Mothership, and a studio side to introduce us to the other bands. Quite a good idea really.
Now we're in the 21st century, and lots of these tracks have been re-released on CD, but there are some omissions so here they are, in their entirety, as they were meant to be heard.

Let's get the ball rolling with the first volume…

Hawkwind - Friends And Relations - The Original Three Albums

Released in 1982. Side one kicked off with Who's Gonna Win The War? by Hawklords. Probably from the recording sessions for their second album (which never saw the light of day). The song was re-worked for the Hawkwind album Levitation, but this is a much punchier take. This particular rendition is available on the Weird Tapes CD, but in an edited version (why?) so this is the only place you can hear the complete song. The next rare track is Robot. This is the best version of Robot I've ever heard - without a doubt. Once again, there is an edited version available on one or two compilation albums out there, but this is the only place you'll hear the full eight-and-a-half minutes of this absolutely stonking track. Captain Calvert at his nutty best!
Side two has 2 Mike Moorcock tracks, including Good Girl Bad Girl which is (as far as I'm aware) only available here. We also have Human Beings by Inner City Unit, which is on various CDs but always at the wrong speed. I don't really know how this could've come about, but on Friends And Relations it is definitely at the correct speed.

tracklist:
01. Who's Gonna Win The War? - Hawklords
02. The Golden Void - Sonic Assassins
03. Robot - Hawkwind
04. Raj Neesh - Inner City Unit
05. Good Girl, Bad Girl - Michael Moorcock's Deep Fix
06. Valium 10 - Hawklords
07. Human Beings - Inner City Unit
08. Time Centre - Michael Moorcock's Deep Fix

Following on from that, we have volume 2 which was called "Twice Upon A Time". The live side contained a track which has never appeared on an official Hawkwind album, and as such it's name is unclear. On here it's called "We Do It" although on other (admittedly unofficial) albums it goes as "I Do It". It's a kind of proto-trance number, and the only other album I've seen it on is Text Of Festival, which was another one of those dodgy unofficial albums we all just had to buy, he he. This is a shorter version though, clocking-in at a mere ten minutes. Rare stuff on the studio side includes Work by Martin Griffin and The Man With The Golden Arm by Nik Turner. And if you're wondering who uncle Nik And The ETs are… I'm led to believe they are Nik, Dave and Harvey - but that could be just a rumour.

tracklist
01. Earth Calling - Hawkwind
02. I Do It - Hawkwind
03. Spirit Of The Age - Hawkwind
04. The Changing (an excerpt) - Harvey Bainbridge
05. Phone Home Elliot - Uncle Nik And The ETs
06. Work - Martin Griffin
07. Man With The Golden Arm - Nik Turner
08. Motherless Children - Dave Brock

Hawkwind - Friends And Relations - The Original Three Albums

The third and final volume of the original series gets off to a flying start with a total wig-out of a track called Psychedelia Lives. It's basically the middle section from Shot Down In The Night, with lots of improv. Once again: this is available elsewhere in edited form, but here you get the full six minutes of it - mind blowing! Following on from that we get a live rendition of Flying Doctor (which has been re-named Drug Cabinet Key here), heavier guitar than the studio version, and Calvert forgets the words and repeats the first verse. It all sounds very chaotic, which is the way it should be! Closing side one is a slightly re-mixed version of the title track of Dave Brock's Earthed To The Ground album. Side two has another Brock piece, When The Going Gets Tough and, as far as I can tell, it's not available anywhere else.

tracklist
01. Psychedelia Lives - Hawkwind
02. Drug Cabinet Key - Hawklords
03. Wired Up For Sound (Radio Edit) - Dave Brock
04. The Widow Song - Robert Calvert
05. Toad On The Road - The Alman Mulo Band
06. When The Going Gets Tough - Dave Brock
07. Vampire - Stravinsky's Shoe
08. Canes Venatice - Underground Zero
