Steve Jones (musician)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephen Philip Jones (born 3 September 1955 in Shepherds Bush, London) is an English rock guitarist and singer, best known for his highly influential work as guitarist and founding member of the punk band Sex Pistols.

Childhood

Steve Jones was born in Shepherds Bush, London. He had started playing guitar when he was nineteen, three months before The Sex Pistols' first show. His early influences were Iggy & The Stooges, and glam rock icons like Roxy Music and David Bowie. He was an only child and his father, an amateur boxer, left when he was two years old.

Up to the age of twelve, he grew up in Hammersmith with his young mother, who worked as a hairdresser, and his grandparents. He then moved to Benbow Road in Shepherd's Bush with his mother and stepfather, where they lived in a one-bedroom basement. Jones never got along with his stepfather, who earned his living making gaskets for electric cookers.

As a teenager, Jones was a kleptomaniac who accumulated fourteen criminal convictions and was the subject of a council care-order. He spent a year in a remand centre, which he says was more enjoyable than being at home, and has said that the Sex Pistols saved him from a life of crime. He was also a member of the QPR hooligan firm where he picked up a few more convictions for football related disorder.

Career

Jones co-founded The Strand (named after a Roxy Music song) with Paul Cook and Wally Nightingale in the early 1970s. The Strand were a precursor to the Sex Pistols, where Jones first learned to play guitar. After dropping Nightingale in the mid-70s, the band was known as The Swankers.

In 1975, Jones went on to co-found the Sex Pistols with Paul Cook, Glen Matlock, and later, Johnny Rotten. Although they only released one album, the Sex Pistols went on to become one of the most influential bands of the 20th century.

Jones is a self-taught guitar player, primarily playing Gibson Les Paul electric guitars in his early years. His usual guitar was a cream colored Gibson Les Paul custom which (according to Filth and the Fury) he had stolen from Mick Ronson at a David Bowie concert when he and his fellow Sex Pistols members posed as road crew members, stealing amps and other equipment. Bill Price, the engineer on Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols called Jones one of the tightest guitar players he has ever worked with, implying that his chord and note timing were precise and impeccable. He also uses Hamer Sunburst double-cut guitars, and prefers the White Les Paul Custom as his primary guitar, as stated in the Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock Sex Pistols video,

Jones became well known among fans for his "hanky on the head", and his permanent perm. He also shared Johnny Rotten's extreme dislike of Sid Vicious' girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. In an interview for The Filth and the Fury, refers to her as "that fucking horrible bird".

After the Sex Pistols broke up in 1978, Jones and drummer Paul Cook co-founded The Professionals. They released one album, but disbanded after a serious car crash while on tour in the U.S. in 1981. The Professionals' debut album was I Didn't See It Coming. Jones was also a member of Chequered Past (led by Michael Des Barres) from 1982 to 1985. They released a self-titled album in 1984.

Jones performed alongside Sex Pistols bandmate Paul Cook on Johnny Thunders's solo album So Alone.

Siouxsie & the Banshees thought for a while to engage Jones after the departure of two of their original members. Rehearsals took place in early 1980 and Jones recorded the guitars parts on three songs of the album Kaleidoscope. The experience didn't go further than a simple recording session.

Jones also played with Thin Lizzy, Joan Jett, Adam Ant, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Andy Taylor, Megadeth, the Neurotic Outsiders and had a solo career in the 1980s and early 1990s. His song "Mercy", from the album of the same name, was used in a Miami Vice episode featured on the Miami Vice II soundtrack album. In 1989, he released his second, much heavier-sounding solo album, titled Fire and Gasoline, which featured Jones on guitar and vocals, Terry Nails on bass, and studio drum wizard Mickey Curry (Bryan Adams, Hall & Oates, Alice Cooper).

Steve Jones was a guest star in an episode of the television sitcom Roseanne.

In 1992, a unique and original project called Fantasy 7 (known as F7) was recorded - still officially un-released - they toured locally in Los Angeles and a few shows in South America featuring the late singer Mark McCoy.

In 1996, Jones formed a band called "Neurotic Outsiders", that featured himself on guitar and vocals, Duff McKagan from Velvet Revolver on bass, Matt Sorum, also from Velvet Revolver, on drums, and John Taylor from Duran Duran on bass. They released a self-titled album in 1996.

Jones produced the debut album of LA-based rock band American Pearl. It was released on August 22, 2000 via Wind-up Records.

He participated in the Sex Pistols reunion concerts and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. He has since done some studio work, playing guitar on Lisa Marie Presley's 2005 album, Now What. Jones plays lead guitar on two tracks one is the song Idiot. "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" which was originally recorded for The Ramones tribute album Were a Happy Family but only appears as a hidden track on Presley's Now What album.

The Sex Pistols, including Steve Jones, played a gig for the 30th anniversary of Never Mind the Bollocks at the Brixton Academy on November 8, 2007. Due to popular demand, two further gigs were announced on 9 November and 10 November. All three gigs sold out within 5 minutes. This demand led to two further gigs being announced, making five in total. A further gig in Brixton on November 12 was followed by one at the MEN Arena in Manchester on November 17. The Glasgow S.E.C.C on 18 November completed the tour.

Jones has recently been seen playing football with Hollywood United F.C.. The team is made up mainly of celebrities and former professional footballers.

In 2008, The Sex Pistols appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival as the headlining act on the Saturday night, the Peace & Love Festival in Sweden, and the Live at Loch Lomond Festival in Scotland.

Equipment

Throughout The Sex Pistols' career Jones mostly used a Gibson Les Paul, in an aged-yellow finish with his personal pin-up girl stickers. He also used a sunburst Gibson Firebird. During the post-Pistols period Jones used Japanese made Burny Les Pauls which he rated higher than Gibsons. Gibson have since made a replica of this guitar, the 'Steve Jones Les Paul Custom', which Jones has used on the recent Sex Pistols re-union gigs.

Jones' amplifier was a Fender Twin Reverb, which was used at all of the Sex Pistols gigs, up until the 1996 re-union and onwards, when he used Marshall amplifiers. Jones sprayed the words "Sex Pistols" and "Guitar Hero" on the grill cloth of the Fender Twin, and it is rumored he coined the phrase Guitar Hero. The Les Paul previously belonged to Sylvain Sylvain of The New York Dolls who gave it to Malcolm Mclaren.

Jonesy's Jukebox

In February 2004, Jones began hosting a daily radio program in Los Angeles called Jonesy's Jukebox, on Indie 103.1 FM, broadcasting live Monday to Friday from noon to 2PM. The premise of the show was that the self-described "Sire of Wilshire" could do whatever he wanted (within FCC rules), with no direction from station management.

Jones mixed an eclectic playlist (culled from his own collection of CDs) with rambling and often humorous interviews of guests from the entertainment industry. He frequently interacted on-air with "Big Ed", his nickname for program producer Kevin Begley (though many think that Jones is saying 'Big Head' because of his accent). On a September 2007 edition of Begley's own weekend show, he recounted the first time that he met Jones, he introduced himself as "Begley". Jones replied "Oh, like Ed Begley Jr.?…I think I'm going to call you 'Big Ed'. It's a good stage name."

Indie 103.1 last broadcast Jonesy's Jukebox 14 January 2009; Indie 103.1 ceased to exist as a broadcast radio station at 10am PST 15 January 2009.

Reviews:
Following his stint with the Sex Pistols, Steve Jones' presence in the music industry has gone virtually unrecognized by the self-important elitist rock critics, who've dismissed him as a punk rock sellout. Shows how much they know about music. His presence on the "Sid & Nancy" soundtrack and Iggy Pop's "Blah Blah Blah" (both in the late 80s) was strong indeed and demostrates his unique abilities as both a first-rate guitarist and songwriter. "Mercy" is one of my favorite albums. Totally unlike a Sex Pistols record, "Mercy" is moody, melodic, and bluesy, kind of like a heavy version of Lloyd Cole or Chris Isaak. It's a real gem. Anyone who pans this album is speaking about something other than the music. Recently, when asked by friends what albums I would most want if stranded on an island, I chose, among others (including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "The White Album," "Hot Rocks," "The Wall," and "Zeppelin's BBC Sessions"), "Mercy." At first they were perplexed. They've since listened and agree how phenomenal a record this is. (Also, Steve Jones just co-produced the Buckcherry premier album; likely the best album of 1999). In sum, any rock collection without "Mercy" is incomplete. –by a customer, amazon.com

If your a lover of eighties rock/aor then this is a must for your collection. The ex Sex pistol bounced back in 1987 with his first solo album, the production is awesome and makes all the tracks sound big and meaty, his vocals are a cross between Billy Idol and Charlie sexton. the best track is Mercy. –by DANNY PAYNE, amazon.com

foul mouthed punk rocker steve jones releases an album with not a swear word in sight and even sings a love song 'raining in my heart'(best ballad ever)their's not even anything that could resemble anything from his previous bands 'rich kids','sex pistols',instead we have a mid-tempo rock album that would have more in common with billy idol rather than the sex pistols.'mercy' is a solidly brilliant album from start to finish and what keeps it brilliant today 15 yrs after it first hit the shops in 1987 is steve's excellant guitar playing especially his solo on 'pretty baby' thats quite simply out of this world. –by don macvicar, amazon.com

Steve Jones was light-years from his Sex Pistols days when he took the solo plunge; his snakelike tresses and deep Hollywood tan were only the most obvious visual evidence. Mercy is a markedly slicker offering than his Pistols and Professionals outings. The old single-minded chug-a-chug has been supplanted by tacky mid-'80s poodle metal trademarks like glistening keyboards; lengthy, winding solos; and inane lyrics. Still, Mercy has its share of rewards. Jones proves a surprisingly adept ballad writer on the mournful title track, "Raining in My Heart" and "Pleasure and Pain" (which originally appeared on the Sid & Nancy soundtrack). "Give It Up" and "That's Enough" are also a pair of cheekily enjoyable guilty pleasures. (The latter track also boasts some cringeworthy rhymes, such as "knees" with "deadly disease.") Jones handles guitars and basses in his usual stalwart fashion, though his lead work is far more conventional than before. Problems start adding up on side two: "Drugs Suck" sincerely voices Jones' hard-won sobriety, but its plodding tempo and melodramatic spoken interludes can't get it off the ground. "Pretty Baby" is a crunch ballad that goes on forever, and "Through the Night" is too bland to make much impression. The dirgelike remake of Keith Lester's '60s weeper "Love Letters to Your Heart" makes for a curious, yet appalling conclusion, since Jones' voice lacks the gristle to pull off the mood. Jones was still finding his feet, so it's hard to be too harsh on him – but he surely could have injected more of his celebrated streetwise character into the proceedings. The dominant mood smacks of "let's play it safe and make a few bucks," but Jones has always fared better when he's allowed to cut loose. There's a pretty good EP struggling to get out, because restraint is the best description for what's happening here. –by Ralph Heibutzki, allmusic.com
