Together with two other bands (No Knox and Lost Kids), Sods spearheaded the Danish punk scene in autumn 1977. Prior to their 3rd album, Sods changed their name to Sort Sol which translates to Black Sun in English.

This Box Set contains all the studio albums which the band has released through the years + three Bonus discs packed with rarities, tunes from comps. and EP's, outtakes, remixes and radio recordings.

Sort Sol is a pioneer rock band from Copenhagen, Denmark. The band was formed in 1977 as a punk rock outfit, originally under the name Sods. Despite drastic changes in the group's line-up, their current name, which translates to English as black sun, has remained with them since the early 1980s. For reasons unknown, the Danish press often refers to their musical style as 'punk', though nearly everything they have put out since 1980 is more reminiscent of styles such as post punk, goth, and even industrial music.

Band history:

Sods was formed in Copenhagen, 1977. The original lineup consisted of: Steen Jørgensen (vocals), Peter Schneidermann (guitar; better known as Peter Peter), Knud Odde (bass) and Tomas Ortved (drums). The band released their first studio album Minutes to Go in February 1979 which is considered the first Danish punk album. They went on to release Under en sort sol in 1980, a more experimental album, influenced in part by Joy Division, Pere Ubu and Television.

T. S. Høeg (saxophone) entered the group for a short while in late 1980. In 1981 the group released their first single under the name Sort Sol. The single "Marble Station" (with the b-side "Misguided") is only released in England on the record label 4AD. In March 1981 the group played their first concert outside of Denmark. 1983 saw the release of the album Dagger & Guitar, featuring punk idol Lydia Lunch.

In 1985 Lars Top-Galia (guitar, previously in the band ADS) joined the group, and the line-up stayed intact until 1996, when Peter Peter left due to disagreements within the band, partly owing to artistic differences.

In 1988 Sort Sol made the album Everything That Rises Must Converge which has been described as their artistic breakthrough. The album consists of 10 slowpaced tracks that rely heavily on the deep voice of Steen Jørgensen. In 1991 they made their first CD release which was Flow My Firetear. This was the first of their records reaching a broad audience.

They reached their peak popularity three years later with Glamourpuss which by 2002 had sold 122,483 copies in Denmark, more than all their previous records had sold. The Danish hit-movie Nattevagten used three tracks from Glamourpuss on the soundtrack, which contributed to the commercial breakthrough of Sort Sol in Denmark.

In 2004 Lars Top-Galia left the band and Sort Sol's future in jeopardy. Tomas Ortved releases his solo debut Sun Pistol in 2008. All members are known from various musical or art project throughout the years, which can be found listed in Jan Poulsens biography of the band.

In March 2009 rumours of a possible comeback began surfacing. On March 17, the Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet wrote that Steen Jørgensen have been in contact with all previous Sort Sol members to arrange farewell concerts. However, to days later Lars Top-Galia denied any planned concerts, but confirmed that there have been talks with the old band members. He also said, "It is not unlikely that we could do in the future, but as I said, there are no concrete plans". [2011 news: Sort Sol has this spring/summer toured in Denmark, played about 10-12 concerts].

Internationally renowned artists who have performed and/or recorded with the group include William S. Burroughs, Lydia Lunch, Link Wray, The Jordanaires, Sune Rose Wagner (of The Raveonettes) and Sissel Kyrkjeboe.

Det nærmeste, vi kommer dansk punkmusiks hellige gral.

Noget af en mammutudgivelse, som følger op på tidligere forsøg på et samlet udtryk, såsom den legendariske Black Box. Prioriteringerne kan diskuteres, eftersom hverken Knud Odde eller Peter Peter er taget med på råd, og Lars Top-Galia synes at være mand for at skrive historien. Specielt Odde har været så dominerende som sangskriver og idémand i årenes løb, og har altid haft sans for detaljen. Det er derfor en stor mangel, at der ikke er en booklet, der for alvor kan tage lytteren i hånden.

Når det er sagt, er det en fornøjelse at høre Jan Eliasons remasteringer af, hvad der nærmest må betegnes som dansk punkmusiks hellige gral. Vi kommer gennem alle otte originale album, ligesom der er tre interessante album, som inkluderer den legendariske ep med covernumrene, som reelt var sidste udgivelse fra den oprindelige kvartet, samt en række af de numre, som kom på det fine opsamlingsalbum Fog Things (1992).



Minutes To Go (1978)

Sods overbeviser fra første færd. Den tidstypiske punkplade, men guitarist Peter Schneidermann (Peter Peter) brillerer med riffet til Flickering Eyes, ligesom Steen Jørgensen vrænger som det sig hør og bør, men afslører også stemmen, der altid har gjort en forskel. Indeholder fede numre som kulthittet Copenhagen – eneste forsøg med reggae nogensinde - Television Sect og coverversionen af Suicide's Ghost Rider, som bliver varemærke til koncerter over de næste mange år.



Under en sort sol (1980)

***** Stars

Syvmileskridt er taget. Punk er blevet til goth i året hvor Ian Curtis takker af ovre i Macclesfield. Sods er på vej ind i solformørkelsen med et blændende album, hvor Steens stemme i den grad tager fra, mens kompositionerne er blevet langt mere ambitiøse. De store sange fra et meget flot album er Marble Station – med tekst af Søren Ulrik Thomsen – og Misguided. Evening Song med tekst af nu afdøde Jesper Reisinger, er også fantastisk. Peter Peter er i rivende udvikling på et boblende og veloplagt album. Hør den sorte sol højt og bliv besat af Tomas Ortveds tromme på Evening Song og de thrashede guitarer. En dansk milepæl.



Dagger & Guitar (1983)

Albummet bliver ofte kritiseret – ikke mindst Chris Butler fra New York-bandet The Waitresses, som var producer og coveret som er ændret - men er et af undertegnedes favoritalbum fra firserne. Period!! Vi taler årene, hvor kvartetten eksperimenterede og ofte fandt guld, fordi udsynet var internationalt med sans for det avantgardistiske og legekammeraterne talte folk som Thorsten S. Høeg. Peter Peters Boy In The Fire er stadig en overset perle, men ellers er det den veloplagte White Shirt (tjek Tomas & Peter ud!!), den Birthday Party-agtige Off Morning og så de to helt formidable numre med No New York-gudinden, Lydia Lunch, nemlig T. S. Høegs Boy-Girl og den afsluttende As She Weeps. Åbent album fra et orkester, der her syntes på tærsklen til at erobre verden.



Everything That Rises Must Converge (1986)

Fire er blevet til fem, man har fået et logo og orkestret har til Afrika-koncerten i Parken smagt rockstjernesuset. EP'en i "grand pop genren" har signaleret farvel til kvartetten, og med svenske 4-Eyed Thomas som producer er lyden mere enkel og beskidt. Åbneren fra Dagger-pladen er blevet til Abyss Revisited – og er en af de bedste rocksange jeg kender - og der er covers i form af Ode To Billie Joe, Fire Engine og Marguerita, hvor Steen går Nick Cave temmelig meget i bedene. Stjernesangene er A Knife For The Ladies, Shapes Of Summer og Peter Peters splatterfilm-ting, Pinocchio Loose. Rigtigt meget af den fremtidige gruppes udtryk falder på plads på dette album.



Flow My Firetear (1991)

Farvel til Medley Records og goddag til Columbia og gennembruddet. Siggimund Blue hilser på forbilledet Gasolin's Alla-tin-galla og så går det derudaf på et stjernealbum, som tæller sange som Daughter Of Sad - hvor Steen Jørgensen og Lars Top-Galia prøver popskabelonen af, som siden grovhitter på det kommende album - Girl Of 1000 Tears, Desdemona og den helt fantastiske Tatlin Tower, som er Knud Odde-tekstunivers og gæsteoptræden af rocklegenden, Link Wray. Et album man aldrig bliver færdig med.



Glamourpuss (1993)

Det store hitalbum hvor punk blev til pop og eksplosionen lå lige om hjørnet. Masser af veloplagte sange og et enkelt udødeligt hit, der virkeligt delte vandene, tænker selvfølgelig på Let Your Fingers Do The Walking. Stadig tæt på det perfekte rockalbum og jeg får slag over ikke at uddele et klokkeklart sekstal – men prøv at høre den selvhøjtidelige Bangalore Flow, som end ikke Ole Theills tablas kan redde. De bedste numre er Dog Star Man, Sleepwalker, Shaheeba Bay, den Jesus & Mary Chain-agtige Written In The Wind og den uimodståelige Eileen Alphabet. En dansk pladeklassiker som af uforståelige grunde heller ikke sikrede international berømmelse. I stedet begyndte bandet at krakelere.



Unspoiled Monsters (1996)

*** Stars

Peter Peter går og smækker med døren, og lyden skifter totalt. Bandet skal roses for at eksperimentere i stedet for at kopiere forgængeren, og der er adskillige gode sange på denne plade, så som Mystery Summer, Untitled, My Stars og især Erlkönig, der siden viser sig at være endnu bedre med masser af krop på i liveversion. Nødvendigt album, men alligevel bandets ringeste.



Snakecharmer (2001)

**** Stars

Knud Odde afleverer nogle vægtige sange og er ellers på vej mod udgangen, og trommeslager Tomas Ortved er også pænt ude i den stadig mere tænderklaprende kulde. De gode sange er Rhinestone, Next Century, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf og Elia Rising, hvor der med Sissel Kyrkjebø dog går vel meget Cave meets Kylie i den. Der sluttes af med det gamle Moody Blues-hit, Nights In White Satin, der afleveres tro mod den oprindelige version, selvom vi her oplever Jørgensens begrænsninger på de høje toner, et problem Justin Hayward ikke har på originalen. Albumtitlen tager dog ikke højde for slangen i paradiset og albummet bliver en svanesang fra legenderne.



Stamina 1: 1978-85 – Early Recordings, Outtakes & First Attempts At The Grand Pop Genre

Fantastisk opsamlingsting, som mere eller mindre er den berømte Black Box som blev udsendt i bare 1000 eksemplarer og EP'en Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town. Her er de helt tidlige ting fra To Trin Ned-studiet i Vestergade i København, og så er vi indenfor i laboratoriet i den oprindelige kvartets sindssygt kreative periode i startfirserne med indspilninger på Bogø i 1982 og numre som den flotte Il Zone, Irene The Doorbell og en medrivende version af Off Morning, helt forskellig fra den der endte på Dagger & Guitar året efter. Endelig er der de fire numre, der udgjorde EP'en, der alle holder og indvarslede den kommende passion for Phil Spector-agtig popproduktion. Hør bare The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.



Stamina 2: 1983-92 – Fog Things & The Violent Bear It Away Recordings

Fog Things var en opsamling, hvor EMI-Medley fik mulighed for at udnytte den opmærksomhed, som gennembruddet på Columbia/Sony havde via Flow My Firetear. Og The Violent Bear It Away var simpelthen arbejdstitlen på det der blev til Everything That Rises-albummet. Her startes stærkt med Sort Sols formidable version af vennen C. V. Jørgensens Indian Summer, der er så god, at vi er mange der sukker efter, at Steen får lavet det album med C.V.-covernumre. Og ellers er de fede ting Roky Ericsons The Interpreter i frydefuld dansk anretning, en speciel version af T-Rex' Children Of The Revolution, en Black Sabbath-cover og endelig Når Solen Stikker Af, den lille vignet til radioprogrammet P4.



Stamina 3: 1991-04 – The Last Bunker Recordings & Esoteric Soundtracks incl. The Hamlet Sessions

Det sidste er også det mere svulstige. Der lægges ud med Jørgensen/Top-Galia meets Aqua-Søren på Holler High fra lanceringen af opsamlingspladen Circle Hits The Flame, hvor de crasher med den forfærdelige Golden Wonder, ligesom den gamle B-side til Popcorn, et outtake fra Flow My Firetear, blev tilsat Elvis Presleys gamle vokalgruppe, The Jordanaires, og blev til Sugar & Wine, uden dog helt at virke. Dertil noget teatermusik. Samlingens deciderede bundskraber.
