Few bands have had to endure as much unauthorised plundering of their back catalogue as Motorhead. "Live At Brixton '87" is another unofficial release and is rumoured by some to be the album the band wanted to release instead of their last live record, "No Sleep At All". Recorded in December 1987, it features the core of Lemmy, Wurzel and Phil Campbell alongside original drummer Philthy Animal Taylor during his second spell with the band; a collaboration cut short when he was withdrawn from service after - to quote the official line - "his knees went". Live At Brixton is not essential Motorhead. But if it's been a while since you indulged, it has enough senses-jolting velocity and volume to evoke all kinds of fond memories. Squeeze your eyes shut against the roar of "Metropolis" or "Eat The Rich" and you can picture Lemmy in a haze of smoke, and Philthy hair spun out like charcoal candy floss - labouring away behind the kit. The oldies, including "Ace Of Spades", are delivered with the usual bludgeoning lack of finesse, and are matched by the ferocity of "Traitor" and "Dogs", where the riffs come spluttering out of the guitars like mouthfuls of bile. Horrible. The album's release will probably have Lemmy gnashing his teeth once more against the injustices of the business, but the music does override the cash-in motives. Compared to the sheer rush of earlier live releases, including 'No Sleep At Аll', this isn't worth going hungry for then again. If you're feeling reckless…Tracklist:~ Mark Blake, Kerrang magazine '94
Bad record deals have plagued Motorhead's career, resulting in countless low-quality live recordings and pointless re-packagings, but 1994's Live at Brixton is one of the rare exceptions. Recorded during the band's 1987 tour, this set was originally chosen for release as their second official live album, No Sleep at All, but at the last minute, another, noticeably inferior concert recording was used. Combining classics from the band's early days ("Stay Clean", "Ace of Spades", "Metropolis") with more recent cuts ("Doctor Rock", "Deaf Forever"), the album's only major downfall is the inclusion of too many mediocre tunes ("Dogs", "Eat The Rich", "Stone Deaf in the USA") from the disappointing Rock 'N' Roll album. Brand new track "Just 'Cos You got the Power" is one of the album's highlights; at over eight minutes, it shows a rarely seen, bluesier side of Motorhead. So if you haven't bought No Sleep at All yet, don't! Get this one instead.~ Ed Rivadavia, all media guide
