Contents include a 2012 remaster of the original album, featuring non-album b-side, "When A Blind Man Cries"; a 1997 remix by bassist Roger Glover, remixed from the original multi-tracks; the Quad QS as stereo mix, in its undecoded form and including alternate guitar solos on 'Maybe I'm A Leo' and 'Lazy'; and a 2012 mix of In Concert '72. The audio only DVD that accompanies the set includes the original album remastered, "When a Blind Man Cries" remastered, the QUAD mix of the album and bonus 5.1 mixes of "When a Blind Man Cries", "Maybe I'm a Leo" and "Lazy".

Led Zeppelin's fourth album, Black Sabbath's Paranoid, and Deep Purple's Machine Head have stood the test of time as the Holy Trinity of English hard rock and heavy metal, serving as the fundamental blueprints followed by virtually every heavy rock & roll band since the early '70s. And, though it is probably the least celebrated of the three, Machine Head contains the "mother of all guitar riffs" – and one of the first learned by every beginning guitarist – in "Smoke on the Water." Inspired by real-life events in Montreux, Switzerland, where Deep Purple were recording the album when the Grand Hotel was burned to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert, neither the song, nor its timeless riff, should need any further description. However, Machine Head was anything but a one-trick pony, introducing the bona fide classic opener "Highway Star," which epitomized all of Deep Purple's intensity and versatility while featuring perhaps the greatest soloing duel ever between guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord. Also in top form was singer Ian Gillan, who crooned and exploded with amazing power and range throughout to establish himself once and for all as one of the finest voices of his generation, bar none. Yes, the plodding shuffle of "Maybe I'm a Leo" shows some signs of age, but punchy singles "Pictures of Home" and "Never Before" remain as vital as ever, displaying Purple at their melodic best. And finally, the spectacular "Space Truckin'" drove Machine Head home with yet another tremendous Blackmore riff, providing a fitting conclusion to one of the essential hard rock albums of all time.

The Quad SQ is an encoded version of the original 4 track Quad master tapes, meaning it could be played as a stereo file, or, using an SQ quad decoder, it could be heard in surround sound, albeit with some serious restrictions on the separation between channels. This CD includes the Quad SQ as stereo, i.e. in it's undecoded form, and is of interest as it often varies considerably from the original stereo mix of the album. For example both 'Maybe I'm A Leo' and 'Lazy' contain alternate guitar solos to the original album mix and therefore the more familiar released versions.
'Smoke On The Water' was an edit created to be the fourth single in the US from Machine Head by Warners, coupled with a live version from Made In Japan. It went on to be the band's biggest selling single ever, apart from in the UK who passed on it! 'Lazy' was a drastic edit created by Warners in the US following the lack of success of 'Never Before' as a single. It also failed to make an impact and was subsequently used as the b-side to their next single in the US and also Japan.

In 1972 EMI Records were keen to promote the recently developed SQ Quadraphonic Sound Hi-Fi format. As a result, a number of albums were selected for mixing in this early "Surround Sound" format. "Machine Head" was chosen as a suitable candidate for this treatment, and was subsequently issued in June 1972 on Purple Records (catalogue number Q4TPSA 7504) as a SQ Quad LP and by Warner Brothers as a SQ Quad LP (catalogue number WSTQ-2607), a Q8 Track Cartridge (catsioque number L9B-2607) and a Dolby Q8 Reel (catalogue number WSTQ-2607-QF).To celebrate the 40ih anniversary of "Machine Head" This audio only DVD features a new 96kHz/24bit high resolution remaster, that 1972 Quad master reworked into a 4.1 Surround Surround Sound version atd 3 bonus 5.1 mixes.
