Cheech and Chong - 4 albums, 1 single 1975-1985

After the triumphs of their first four albums, all hailed as comedy gems, Cheech and Chong’s act began to stale. In 1975 instead of a new album they issued a single to ride the “Jaws” film phenomenon – “(How I Spent My Summer Vacation) Or A Day At The Beach With Pedro And Man.” The single peaked at #15 on the Billboard singles chart. Fans had to wait until 1976 for the next stoner comedy fix. “Sleeping Beauty” was the uneven album the duo delivered. While it reached #25 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, it remained on the charts only 13 weeks. It was a sign of things to come.

The good news was that Hollywood was calling and Cheech and Chong transferred seemlessly onto film. 1978’s “Up In Smoke” was a summer hit for Paramount Pictures and guaranteed there would be more films to come.

Despite "Up In Smoke" being a hit the soundtrack was a failure, hitting #162 on the chart. This may have been due to Warners waiting three months after the film opened to release a soundtrack. Performing even worse was their 1980 return to the studio, “Let’s Make a New Dope Deal,” which was released at the same time as “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie” hit theaters, but few noticed. It managed to reach #173 on the album chart and stayed on the charts just three weeks.

It would take five years for the duo to return to the recording studio. By this time they had stopped making movies, with each one grossing less than the one before it. They had since parted ways with Ode/Warner Bros. Records and issued their newest album on MCA Records. 1985's “Get Out Of My Room” (which included an unlikely pairing of Blind Melon Chitlin' and Tyrone Shoelaces) failed to be the comeback everyone was hoping for. It reached #71 on the album charts and stayed on the chart 11 weeks. Cheech and Chong disbanded following the album’s release.
