In Summer 2014, the world s most revered monster is reborn as Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures unleash the epic action adventure Godzilla. From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless.

The new Godzilla remake, directed by Gareth Edwards, is a much darker and violent film than the original, but does the film justice with the epic creation that is Gojira, the giant lizard (who also has a different origin story here). So, to help the film stand out, composer Alexandre Desplat composed and conducted this darkly brooding score that may even be darker than the film itself.

The opening theme is easily the best track on the soundtrack, with the use of strange horns and intense percussion to help build that strangeness of the hour and set the scene for the iconic monster. Then, it's followed up by the slow-building track "Inside the Mines." This track helps to showcase an extremely important scene in the film, and sets the tone very nicely. It's followed up by the more intense and faster track "The Power Plant" where Bryan Cranston's character Joe Brody and his wife are caught in the middle of something truly disastrous, as the plant begins to fall apart. This track ends on a very tragic and heart-breaking note, and in the film, it's easily the most tear-jerking scene. Now, the remaining tracks are fantastic (especially "Airport Attack," which is a pretty awesome track showcasing Godzilla's arrival in fighting the MUTOs), but i won't continue with a track analysis.

I highly recommend this score if you saw the film and liked/loved it, or if you just like Desplat's music, like Zero Dark Thirty, Argo and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts I & II. The tone of the score bears some similarity to Marc Streitenfeld's "Prometheus," but is in no way similar in sound.
