You basically can’t go wrong with early 90s death metal and this album is one more proof of that. “Shadows of the Past” is Sentenced at their deadliest and heaviest. The material is mostly influenced by two bands: Death ( “Leprosy” – “Spiritual Healing” era) and Paradise Lost (“Lost Paradise” – “Gothic” era). Some slower parts also remind me of Boltthrower. The vocals sound quite a lot like Chuck Schuldiner. Despite being heavily influenced by the aforementioned acts, this album is not any kind of weak clone but stands up very favourably among all the noteworthy old school death metal releases. Production wise “Shadows of the Past” is the heaviest Sentenced outing for sure. The guitars are thick and down tuned just like you’d expect them to be and the bass provides a proper foundation for the music. The album has been recorded at Tico-Tico studios but still manages to sound different from the tons of other metal albums recorded there. “When the Moment of Death Arrives” is the first track and after a short mournful keyboard intro the metal stuff kicks in. You immediately notice the obvious Paradise Lost influence in the guitar melody, great! The fast parts of this song make me think of Death. This track shows you exactly what this album is about: a skilled combination of heavy riffs and melodies that really manages to keep one’s attention and has that great old school death metal feel. “Rot to Dead” features a part which sounds very Death influenced when looking at both the guitar riff and drum rhythm, if you’ve heard the two Death albums mentioned in the beginning of this review, you’ll know what I mean. The rest of the album continues in the same manner: heavy Death/Paradise Lost/Boltthrower inspired riffing meets Paradise Lost inspired melodies. I’m reviewing the re-release of this album, which has the “Journey to Pohjola” promo tape as bonus tracks. Two of its tracks appeared on latter releases, while the instrumental “Mythic Silence (As They Wander in the Mist)” remained exclusive to this tape. This instrumental track is in the “North From Here” vein, melodic and technical, a great listen nonetheless. The version of “Wings” on this promo doesn’t differ much from the version on “North From Here” but some guitar and bass lines are a bit different from the final version. I myself hadn’t heard “Journey to Pohjola” before so I really appreciate it being included here. If you don’t have this yet, make sure to get it and enjoy some truly classic death metal! The inclusion of “Journey to Pohjola” as a bonus makes this re-release a real must.

Sophomore efforts usually tell a lot about a band. So it’s always best to apprehend a band’s debut album as a display of raw ideas, simply put together for the sake of making music and/or getting the listener to generally identify what a band is all about. However, it’s perfectly obvious, that through Metal’s entire existence as a genre, there have been many bands that release pretty basic material on their first album, and then one or two years later, release a ground breaking record that has the potential to change the face of rock and metal music alike. A few famous examples of rapid progression from debut to sophomore album are as listed; Metallica (Kill Em All/Ride The Lightning), Iron Maiden (self titled/Killers), Mercyful Fate (Melissa/Don’t Break The Oath, although this is debatable to many) and Judas Priest (Rocka Rolla/Sad Wings Of Destiny). In other words, the full dynamics and potential of a band are not often reached with their first release. Sometimes it even takes two, three or more records for the skills of a band to truly shine. Sentenced belongs in the group of names that I just listed above. If you’ve read my review for Shadows of the Past, you’ll notice that the overall point of the review states that although the record itself is good, it’s still pretty damn typical for Death Metal. This is definitely NOT the case with North From Here. To claim that the band had progressed in any way would be an understatement. One of the more chief aspects of the album are the vocals. It was a wise choice for Miika to consider the band’s bassist, Taneli Jarva for the spot as the band’s lead vocalist. When it comes to performing harsh vocals, this guy seriously hits the nail on the head! It also gave Miika the opportunity to focus more on his guitar playing, as it’s quite obvious that his playing style on this record is nothing short of fantastic. There are various styles of playing to be heard here. You know, some of it even sounds a tad Black Metal-ish, both in the riffing style and atmosphere portrayed. I’d even go as far as saying that Jarva’s high pitched, rasping shrieks would perfectly suit an early raw Black Metal band. One thing that is particular about North From Here is its cold, bleak atmosphere. This even earned Sentence the tag “The Northernmost Killers”, for their deadly, blistering fast approach at melodic, yet extremely fierce Death Metal (and also because of the fact that they are from Finland). Yes, this is considerably faster than Shadows of the Past, but more precisely executed. The riffs shift from fast tremolo picking, to thrashing, to shredding, to neo-classical and everything in between. This new sound, at the time, was a completely different entity than what was featured on the first album. Another new feature was the addition of keyboards to the music. But fear not, this only enhances the listening experience for an already cold and dreary record. While other Finish bands such as Children of Bodom use keys to underline (or overline?) the guitar work, Sentenced uses them sparingly, and even when upfront, they’re used solely for atmosphere, nothing more. Want proof that keyboards in Metal aren’t necessarily a pussy element? Give this a spin. I guarantee, your mind will change. Production is top notch, superb for 1993. The instruments can all be clearly deciphered, particularly the bass. While the bass served as nothing more than a back-bone for the band at the time the debut album was released, it’s actually put to use exceptionally well, even earning some stand out points in a few of the tracks. Just check out some of the bass acrobatics heard in “Capture of Fire”, “Awaiting the Winter Frost” and the closing track, “Epic“. Others like “My Sky Is Darker Than Thine” and “Fields of Blood; Harvester of Hate” reign supreme in the riff department, outshining pretty much any other extreme Metal that transpired at the time. Oh, and one more thing. I can’t finish off this review without pointing out the album’s downright best song, hands down; “Northern Lights”! It’s an outstanding epic, yet malevolent track that alters from break-neck thrashing, to somber, dark melodies accompanied by barren sounding keyboards that lace the track with a coat of bitterness. I’d go as far as saying that North From Here is Sentenced’s most extreme release. Yes, technically this is ‘melodic’ Death Metal, though not in the same vein as In Flames or Arch Enemy since the band doesn’t rely on recycled Iron Maiden riffs to construct their songs. Anyway, this album came out before the big Gothenburg explosion in Sweden, so that‘s that. Recommended to any fans of extreme Metal and/or to those who love the power of the RIFF!

Sentenced - Japanese Albums Collection (1991-2005, 9CD)

Sentenced - Love & Death (EP) (1995)
Year & Label: 1996, Victor Music Entertainment Inc., Japan | CD#: VICP-2137
Melodic Death Metal | FLAC: 250 MB | Artwork: 20 MB | MP3: 80 MB

Sentenced are a band that have struck me from the heart ever since I first laid ears on their music. And you know what? Their second and last EP, Love & Death, is a perfect example of the kind of music that basically, well…keeps me alive. It provides sight into a band that existed in an era when Metal was on its hands & knees in terms of both popularity and survival. On a vague note, Sentenced just did their thing and didn’t give a shit about what was going on around them. Not only were their Death Metal elements from the past were completely shed away at this point within their career, but their style as a whole seemed to have completely vanished in its own existence, yet reborn, while still on the verge of dying. But, to be reborn, you first have to die, and that’s what Sentenced is all about. The progressiveness from the past two releases, The Trooper and Amok, seems to thrive all over this release. If Amok didn’t push away long time fans since the beginning, then this EP would sure have. In fact, some clean sung vocal passages from Jarva can be established in the first and best track on the record, “The Way I Wanna Go“; a significantly straight forward rocker with a chorus that will get nailed to the back of your skull! I’m not kidding you. The song-writing on this track is extraordinarily powerful, but the simplicity of it is just charismatic. The next song, “Obsession“, sounds like a left over track from the Amok sessions. It’s another straight forward number that’s lesser than the opening tune, but above the average tune. “Dreamlands” also shouldn’t be without mention either. It’s got “melancholy” written all over it, and hence its title, a “dreamy” feel. But up next, we’ve got one of my all time favorite song covers! It’s none other than a surprising version of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding, in which even in its original form is a great song. I can’t necessarily say that Sentenced have perfected it, but it’s kind of like their Iron Maiden cover; they just add their own touch to it for a pleasant listen. The EPs title cut, “Love & Death”, finishes things off on a brilliant note. It’s remenicint of “The Way I Wanna Go” with its catchy yet woeful chorus and its basic overall structure. It’s safe to say that these are two of Sentenced’s all time best songs, and are both perfect reasons for hunting down this EP alone. But, luckily for modern times, its been reissued on CD together with Amok. There are many fans who claim that this EP marked the true death of Sentenced. Well, if they’re not into later stuff, it’s their loss. They’re the ones missing out. In fact, as stated above, this EP did mark a certain death for the band, as it was their last release with Jarva Taneli on vocals, but it also marked a rebirth for them, which wouldn’t fully come into play until the next release, Down.

Sentenced - Japanese Albums Collection (1991-2005, 9CD)

Sentenced - Amok (1995, Remastered)
Year & Label: 1997, Victor Music Entertainment Inc., Japan | CD#: VICP-5546
Melodic Death Metal | FLAC: 430 MB | Artwork: 25 MB | MP3: 160 MB

Amok is an important album for me in many ways. Perhaps it's an important album for everyone and they just don't know it. One of the earliest triumphs to emerge from the cross-pollination of death metal and classic, melodic riffing, it's one of the true forebears of the 'melodeath' we know today, though not one which has often been copied nor equaled. It's also a crushing frustration, because it's the last full-length with Taneli Jarva on vocals, and neither Sentenced nor his new band The Black League would ever write an album even close to this in quality. This is a perfect union of death metal roots aggression and melody. The band had an interesting style going on its predecessor North From Here, which was a melancholic but extremely melodic take on straight laced death metal. Amok is not really a 'death' metal album. Jarva's vocals are still growls, and loaded with character at that, but the music here is classic, melodic metal full of triumphant hooks and solid verse rhythms. "The War Ain't Over!" begins with some flange guitars over the samples of bombs and cannon fire, and then the guitars break out into a crazy awesome melody after a few keyboard notes. Jarva's slathering, almost drunk sounding vocals drive it home, before a brief acoustic bridge. The rest of the track is pure magic, without a single mispaced noted. Brilliant. "Phenix" goes one further with an AMAZING melody to lead off. The bluesy metal riffing of the verse is excellent, and the emotional inertia of its chorus is beautiful. "New Age Messiah" offers a sad and wondrous stream of mutes and chords which would characterize a great many of their future material. But it also has Taneli Jarva's explosive vocal tethering, and a tasteful touch of very brief female vocals. I would explode every time I heard this chorus! This and a few other albums (Elegy, Passage, The Jester Race, etc) restored my faith that metal could offer something new and impressive after the waning early 90s. "Forever Lost" is another stunning track with some great acoustic riffs and interesting, majestic build-up. Fire…fire…dance with me! Oh the bliss. The great riffs. "Funeral Spring" creates a bluesy Southern feel over some slower metal chords yet fits right in with the faster material. Jarva uses a deep clean voice intertwined with his growls here. "Nepenthe" is a crystalline acoustic that transforms into pure balls out metal rocking. "Dance on the Graves ('lil Siztah)" is another of the more experimental, rock tunes but still flows with some excellent metal melodies. One could consider these past few tracks the prelude to Jarva's future rock'n'roll direction with The Black League. "Moon Magick" is a mood piece with some great drumming and layers of guitar atmospherics. "The Golden Stream of Lapland" completes the album, an excellent instrumental with some burning, immersive leads. In 1995 there were few musicians writing material of this quality, in metal or otherwise. Not to mention the durability! It may not bear the densely overdubbed production values of today's artists, but Amok still has a classic, fresh appeal. All the instruments sound clear, fantastic, yet there is a raw edge manifest in Jarva's vocals which creates an organic sheen. Such a creative and expressive use of polar metal extremes in tangent! By far the best material Sentenced have ever produced. Ville Laihiala was a decent singer but really a one trick pony. His voice, consistent though it is, never captured that drunken rage and 'about to fall off the horse' quality which characterized this masterpiece. This is an essential album to own if you like metal with melody or really any good rock music.

Sentenced - Japanese Albums Collection (1991-2005, 9CD)

Sentenced - Down (1996)
Year & Label: 1997, Victor Music Entertainment Inc., Japan | CD#: VICP-5827
Goth Rock/Heavy Metal | FLAC: 320 MB | Artwork: 40 MB | MP3: 100 MB

There are so many credits for Sentenced. They were one of the pioneer bands that introduced Finnish metal scene to this world. They were once the finest Finnish death metal band. They had made a classic melodic death metal album Amok in 1995. After those incredible honors, their original vocalist Taneli Jarva decided to leave the band for personal reason. A new vocalist Ville Laihiala joined the Finns, and he had revolutionized Sentenced's music since then. His depressive voice fits new Sentenced sound perfectly. In 1996, Sentenced released their 4th debut album: Down. This album soon became the definitive Sentenced album, and one of the best metal albums Finnish have ever made. This album has everything Sentenced's music should have. It has dramatic intro: The Gate. Sentenced use keyboard to create strange voices, which seems come out from your dream. The Gate. sounds weird, but it has an invisible power that takes you to another world, a fantastic beginning. Down. has traditional heavy metal masterpieces such as Noose, Bleed, and l Throw The First Rock. These songs really rock you on. They have great riffs, amazing solos, fast pace drumming and unique vocals. All of three songs are true metal classics. I like Bleed and l Throw The First Rock a lot, Bleed has the best riffs on this album, l Throw Your First Rock has the best Guitar melodies, both of them are great example of old sentenced sound. Besides the old material, Sentenced also create something new in “Down? Songs like Shadegrown, Keep My Grave Open, Crumbling Down (Give Up Hope), and Ode to the End introduce their new music style to everybody: the combination of depressive anger and sad melancholy. Shadegrown is a very dark song. Crumbling Down (Give Up Hope) and Ode to the End are depressive and painful. Keep My Grave Open shows what Melancholy should sound like. With these songs, new Sentenced were born, they were born to tell us the bitterness of life, to teach us how to finish ourselves. You'd better stay away from them when you are in the bad mood. Down still have three incredible songs: Sun Won't Shine, 0132 and Warrior of Life (Reaper Redeemer). Sun Won't Shine is another classic song made by Sentenced, It has the best chorus in the album. It prove that Sentenced have the ability to write catchy metal music. 0132 is an instrumental, two guitarists Miika Tenkula and Sami Lopakka play perfect harmonies in this song. 0132 can also be considered as the intro of Warrior of Life. Warrior of Life is perhaps the most special song on the album. It combines symphonic keyboard line, death metal guitar riffs, depressive melodies and catchy chorus. One can only listen these kind of songs in “Down? There is no other album has such music like this. Lyrically speaking, Down is definitely not the album that parents will welcome. It's full of despair, pessimism, and discouragement. It always shows the lust of suicide. But to consider it as art, Down is a perfect model of depressive/dark/doom/gothic metal, it has powerful beginning and strong finish, there is no weak song in it. Maybe some people can't understand why does Down so influential, but if you went back to 1996, the days that lots of great Finnish metal bands and classic gothic/doom/dark/depressive metal albums don't exist, you might figure out why. Down is not only the beginning of the new era of Sentenced's career, but also a turning point of Finnish metal music. This album is an unquestionable metal classic, an essential.

Sentenced - Japanese Albums Collection (1991-2005, 9CD)

Sentenced - Frozen (1998)
Year & Label: 1998, Victor Music Entertainment Inc., Japan | CD#: VICP-60484
Goth Rock/Heavy Metal | FLAC: 400 MB | Artwork: 20 MB | MP3: 130 MB

How does a band like Sentenced follow a great album like "Down"? Simple, an even better album in "Frozen". Stylistically "Frozen" follows the same path as down but adds some more melody, especially in the chorus' which remind one of some good old heavy metal/hard rock. Before actually getting into the bulk of the review I have one thing to say and that is that unless you are a HARDCORE Sentenced freak, don't buy the gold digi-pack version! Sure it contains four extra songs but they are terrible covers of "I Wanna Be Somebody", "Creep", "Digging the Grave", and "House of the Rising Sun" from well known Metal/Rock bands. Now these are all good songs in their original versions BUT unfortunately Ville Laihiala (Vocalist) doesn't have the voice for these songs plus I don't think these songs fit in with the whole Sentenced vibe…aside from "Digging the Grave" which fits the vibe but Ville is no Mike Patton. Plus the gold version of the album gives you a seriously fucked playing order, slipping two covers in after the first 3 songs and the build up with the songs that occurs in the normal version doesn't happen as the catchiest song is played first and the intro piece to build up the album comes in at track 6…WHAT THE FUCK!? When played in the proper order the album has more of an impact and some of the songs even sound better! Getting back to the actual music on the album this is where I think Sentenced have hit their peak (and I think they're still at their peak with the releases of "Crimson" and "The Cold White Light"). This album brought the band a level higher. Overall the album has quite a few killer tracks "The Suicider" being the catchiest. The chorus on this one hooks you in quickly and musically is probably the most upbeat on the album. "For the Love I Bear" also fits in with "The Suicider" as being a very catchy song. I love the verse on this one with the drums, the cool bass line, and the vocals fitting nicely overtop. "Grave Sweet Grave" is also another great song although the vocals in the verse sound very familiar…almost as if they were taken from a popular rock song. "Burn" is a cool upbeat instrumental with a heavy middle eastern influence. "Drown Together" and "Let Go (The Last Chapter)" are probably my two favorites on the album…I don't know what it is but I just love these two the best. "Let Go (The Last Chapter)" has a very cool guitar/drum part for the verses, very cool!

Sentenced - Japanese Albums Collection (1991-2005, 9CD)

Sentenced - Crimson (2000)
Year & Label: 2000, Victor Music Entertainment Inc., Japan | CD#: VICP-60968
Goth Rock/Heavy Metal | FLAC: 430 MB | Artwork: 40 MB | MP3: 190 MB

Sentenced, the eternal debate: are they or are they not metal? Well whatever it is, it is not bad. I would call their latest albums gothic metal, with hard rock influences. Crimson is a good album, many songs on it are solid. The first time I heard the album, I fell in love with, however, as the number of times that I listened to the album progressed, the less I liked the album. It starts off very good, but then becomes quite boring and repetitive, every song sounds quite similar. I hate saying that a band is boring, but I have lost great interest in Sentenced since the album Frozen. This is a dark and very depressing album to listen to. Again, the lyrics are like all of their previous albums: suicide, sadness, etc. Home In Despair was the track that made me discover, and like, Sentenced. It remains one of my favourite songs on Crimson. Fragile is the best track on the album, it has a very nice chorus. Sometimes it feels it would be better for you all, if I ceased to exist or never was born at all, is a good example to demonstrate the theme of most of the songs on the record. There are not really any stand-out tracks, every song sounds the same, but sounds good. This is a short review, but what more can I say, you have to listen to it and judge it yourself. If you enjoyed Frozen, you will definitely like this album. It receives 78/100 from me, it is a good album, but after a few hearings, becomes uninteresting.

Sentenced - Japanese Albums Collection (1991-2005, 9CD)

Sentenced - The Cold White Light (2002)
Year & Label: , Victor Music Entertainment Inc., Japan | CD#: VICP-61898
Heavy Metal/Gothic Metal | FLAC: 350 MB | Artwork: 35 MB | DATA: 40MB | MP3: 11 0 MB

Sentenced: obviously one of the most depressing bands of all time. Their placement in the metal community is solidified only by their first two efforts–Shadows of the Past and North from Here. Yes, they're metal. Yes, they've changed vocalists and musical styles, but are they metal? YES. With their 2002 effort "The Cold White Light" they explore a more detailed lyrical basis for suicide. My opinion? Their best choice yet, even after 2000's "Crimson," which was a fantastic album. Ville Laihiala's voice is even more ridden with angst, hatred, sorrow, and despair than ever. Sadly, this is the last album which features such magnificence. This album opens with a Finnish traditional folk/lullabye before kicking in with Cross My Heart and Hope to Die, one of the many highlights of this album. Chord oriented, very standard timing and standard tuning, this song could easily pass for a gothic rock-esque sound being played in rave clubs and underground meth houses everywhere for shameless gothic kids confessing their undying love to their little vampiresses. Yet there is one song in particular that requires mentioning on this album. Though another love confessional, "You Are the One" is simply one of the most beautiful songs ever crafted by this band. Lyrically, musically.. everything is perfect. I can't describe with words, one must only experience this for themselves to truly understand the beauty of this song. This is typical post-Down era Sentenced, but fine-tuned and very well rehearsed. To put it lightly, their best album. A well-deserved sequel to the already amazing "Crimson."

Sentenced - Japanese Albums Collection (1991-2005, 9CD)

Sentenced - The Funeral Album (2005)

I can't believe this! I simply can not! Of course they have their reasons to do this, but …oh well, guess it's better to quit at a high point. Well, done with the drama, and onto the review. First of all, this album rules!! It's just perfect for when your depressed or just wanna hear some depressing tunes. Although I have to admit that from the first listen I wasn't totally captivated. But repeated listens just burned this album in my brain. It's that good! The vocals are really emotional, they haven't changed at all, and if they have, well, it's for the better. They fit the music so well, just when your adrenaline is going out of control, he just screams his lungs out with anger or sadness, whichever applies. The vocals really carry this album. The guitars are just heavy as Hell! The solos they pull off are done at the right moment, at the right speed, and when the guitars are coupled with acoustic guitars, in my opinion, they create an even better experience. One instrument that helps give form to some of the songs has to be the piano, it's very moving, just listen to the opening of "Lower The Flags". I liked the whole album, but my favourites have to be: Ever-Frost, a little fast, of course I mean "fast" for a Sentenced song, Vengeance Is Mine, although that title has been used numbers of times, it's one Hell of a strong song, Consider Us Dead, and End Of The Road are really fucking great!
The lyrics deal with suicide, love, loosing love, getting revenge, death (wao that's odd!), just pure depressing stuff, just perfect! Thanks for all the great music guys, may you rest in peace!
