Black Label Society / Zakk Wylde / Pride And Glory - Japanese Album Collection (11 CD)

After falling out with mentor Ozzy Osbourne following the recording sessions for 1995's Ozzmosis, guitarist Zakk Wylde struck out on his own with his first solo album, Book of Shadows, in 1996. When it failed to score any mainstream success, the six-stringer took an extended break before resurfacing with a new album and band called Black Label Society in 1999, featuring Wylde on vocals, guitar, and bass and drummer Phil Ondich. A number of different musicians would sift through the band's ranks during the convoluted tour that followed, but Ondich was back on the drum stool by the time Black Label Society recorded 2000's Stronger Than Death album for new label Spitfire Records. The subsequent tour included a slot on the second stage of his old boss' Ozzfest tour and yielded the Alcohol Fueled Brewtality Live!! album in 2001. The band returned to Ozzfest the following year (this time on the main stage) in support of the 1919 Eternal LP. Blessed Hellride appeared in 2003 and Hangover Music, Vol. 6 followed a year later. Mafia, Black Label Society's seventh album, was released in spring 2005. The following October, Spitfire Records issued the Wylde work compilation Kings of Damnation: Era 1998-2004. In 2006, the band began their relationship with the Roadrunner label with a new album, Shot to Hell.

The Black Label Society’s engagement with Roadrunner was short-lived, with the band departing the label the following year. Most of 2007 was spent with the members pursuing other projects - Wylde once again toured with Ozzy, while current members bassist JD Deservio and guitarist Nick Catanese concentrated on their own bands. A compilation called Skullage appeared in 2009, then Wylde pulled the band - now featuring Catanese and Deservio and drummer Will Hunt - into the studio for Order of the Black, Black Label Society’s eighth album, released in the summer of 2010.

Released from the confines of being Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist, Zakk Wylde turns in a surprisingly solid debut album from his own band, Pride & Glory. Wylde's guitar still has that Sabbath crunch, but what makes Pride & Glory so listenable is the way it is melded to the deeply Southern rock & roll of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Wylde manages to turn in a handful of well-written songs, but even when the songwriting isn't so hot, the playing is. And that's the point of this kind of rock, anyway.

After spending several years with Ozzy Osbourne and recording one album with the heavy Southern rock trio Pride & Glory, guitarist Zakk Wylde released his debut solo album, Book of Shadows, in June of 1996. Naturally, the album is a guitar showcase, with each song boasting a dazzling guitar solo or two. That much was expected. What is a surprise is the musical diversity apparent throughout the album. Wylde does kick out some heavy riff-driven rockers, but he also detours into blues, country, and folk on occasion. That diversity ensures that Book of Shadows is more listenable for the average listener than most guitarist-led albums. However, Wylde's songwriting skills remain weak; although the playing is memorable, the melodies rarely are. Nevertheless, there's enough prime instrumental work here to make it a very worthwhile listen for guitar aficionados and a few of the tracks should satiate fans of straight-ahead heavy boogie rock.

In the press material for Sonic Brew, Zakk Wylde calls his new project Black Label Society, a band featuring himself and drummer Phil Ondich, "Alcohol Fueled Brewtality for the Next Millennium." Translated, that means Sonic Brew is a boozy, balls-to-the-wall metallic hard rock album that is unashamed about being a hard rock album. To be blunt, nothing on the record sounds as if it's designed for the year 2000 – it sounds like classic '80s metal. Wylde isn't a great singer or songwriter, but he can write a riff and drive it into the ground while spitting out furious solos. The thing is, he's so unabashed about his love for this music that it winds up being quite entertaining. Few other albums in 1999 sound like this, and that will be enough for fans of unpretentious, boozy, bloozy hard rock, since they aren't getting much of it at the close of the 20th century.

For Black Label Society's sophomore effort, 2000s Stronger Than Death, Zakk Wylde and company (actually, only one other full member at the time, drummer Phil Ondich) offered another slab of guitar-heavy, headbanging metal. With many rock bands expanding their approach – for better or for worse – on subsequent albums, Stronger Than Death shed the few remaining Southern rock elements that were heard on Sonic Brew (undoubtedly left over from Wylde's Pride & Glory days). The riffs are meaty and the solos are furious, as heard on such tracks as the album-opening "All for You," "Counterfeit God" (which is a song about a subject that seemingly every single metal band has penned a song about – televangelists), and the title track, the latter of which includes a vocal cameo from New York Mets slugger Mike Piazza. Stronger Than Death provided a firm confirmation that Black Label Society would be sticking closely to the guitar-heavy game plan from here on out.

Former Ozzy Osbourne axe-slinger Zakk Wylde rose to international guitar acclaim for the better part of the 1990s after helping co-author Ozzy's No Rest for the Wicked, No More Tears, and Ozzmosis. From there, Wylde formed Pride and Glory, a Southern-fried combo that released a disc and then yielded the hammer and thunder of Black Label Society, whose incorrigible, heavyweight riffs and rhythms are showcased here on the band's completely live, un-overdubbed Alcohol Fueled Brewtality Live!! Most of the material resides somewhere between the chugging, lugubrious redneck metal of Pantera and labelmates Crowbar, and the more Southern approach of latter-day Corrosion of Conformity – in other words, super-heavy, down-tuned riffage. What obviously sets this apart is Wylde's lightning-fast leads and sheer six-string ability. The songs may be little more than basic collections of riffs, and Wylde far too often entreats the crowd to "make some f*cking noise!" but this is a testosterone-fueled sound often rejected by the mainstream press and heartily embraced by an aggressive listenership. Black Label Society does this as well as anyone out there, and it's heartening to see four guys on a stage hammering it out, riff by riff, beat by beat. Add Wylde's raw, bluesy baritone – at times reminiscent of Jerry Cantrell or Layne Staley – on top of that, and you've got a hearty meal.

Not the sh*t-kicking shtick the man's Grizzly Adams appearance and metal-as-a-way-of-life persona might suggest, 1919 Eternal might just be the most down-tuned record this side of Crowbar's dirge, or the Melvins. Every riff is a meaty, grindy morsel that sticks to your ribs, Zakk Wylde's vocals are either guttural grunting like he's Wino from the Obsessed with a hangover or a pleasant, passive voice like when Phil Anselmo covered "Planet Caravan" (see the dark ballad "Bridge to Cross"), and the rest of the instrumentation is decidedly secondary to the cause and effect. The dark feel of the mix causes even the thrashier moments, such as opener "Bleed for Me," that alternates between Ozzy and later-period Metallica, and the self-explanatory "Battering Ram," to seem sluggish, like they're sinking in quicksand. With the majority of the disc residing in mid-tempo-land, the sound is akin to running in a dream; you're not getting anywhere very quickly, and eventually you wonder where you were trying to go in the first place. Wylde means what he says, whether he's speaking with words or his axe, and such conviction is encouraging. A few gems reside, such as the lively "Genocide Junkies" and "Life/Birth/Blood/Doom," a spooky tune with rhythmically funky bass courtesy of Robert Trujillo that'll get your head nodding and a solo that is to die for, but much of 1919 Eternal sounds like the stuff that didn't make the last couple of Corrosion of Conformity records. And the stuff that was on the COC discs wasn't that great either.

Nu-metal be damned; Zakk Wylde might say there's only one kind of metal, and that's "heavy." On THE BLESSED HELLRIDE, the ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist's Black Label Society attempts to create nothing less than the ultimate mullet-sporting high school headbanger's dream album. Fans of old school, "strap on Les Paul/insert into Marshall stack/rock like hell" thrash mayhem will find a lot to love here, from the raw, aggressive monster guitar and drum sounds to the Black Sabbath-via-Judas Priest gargantuan riffs. The lyrics pretty much stick to the metal essentials: drugs, evil, supernatural forces, death, and oh yeah, more drugs. For those who find nu-metal suspiciously lacking in heft, THE BLESSED HELLRIDE provides a welcome fix of the hard stuff.

The premier rock guitarist of our generation and his Black Label Society cohorts have raised the bar once again with The Blessed Hellride, a triumphant album of uncompromising vision and undeniable virtuosity that brings a much needed dose of guitar fueled mastery to the national stage. 11 tracks featuring 'Stillborn' (w/special guest vocalist Ozzy Osbourne) & 'We Live No More'

Alice in Chains' shadow has grown longer as post-grunge settles into homogeny. Every outfit from Godsmack to Soil claims them as an influence; Staind's Aaron Lewis even wrote "Layne" in tribute to the band's departed frontman. Zakk Wylde throws his own goatee into that ring with Black Label Society's Hangover Music, Vol. 6, a largely acoustic album that recalls both Jar of Flies and Wylde's own Book of Shadows. He handles vocals, piano, and acoustic duties himself, also contributing the occasional display of electric guitar wizardry just to remind listeners of where he came from. Ozzy's influence looms at least as large as Alice in Chains – he and his family are thanked prominently in the liner notes, and material like the ballad "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" sounds like it could have been written for him. (Wylde also offers his own tribute to Staley, also called "Layne.") Hangover Music's restraint is admirable, considering Wylde's fretboard prowess; in fact, the album's pretty damn mellow. "Won't Find It Here" cops the melody from U2's "One," while standouts "Crazy or High" and "Queen of Sorrow" feature wails from Wylde's electric over Southern rock-influenced acoustic licks and a rhythm section that includes Crowbar drummer Craig Nunenmacher. "Takillya (Estyabon)" is a brief burst of acoustic fretboard magic, and the piano-led "Woman Don't Cry" finds Wylde shelving his normally tortured moan in favor of a heartfelt croon comparable to Axl Rose on G N' R Lies. It makes the track one of the album's highlights, since Wylde's vocals on the majority of Hangover Music suggest he's a much better guitar player than he is a singer. Still, fans eager for fiery guitar work will enjoy "House of Doom," which joins the lighter "No Other" as the most obvious Alice in Chains tributes (barring "Layne," of course). Hangover Music, Vol. 6 also includes an earnest, solo piano version of the Procol Harum classic rock radio fave "Whiter Shade of Pale."

Quite simply, Zakk Wylde is one of metal's most consistent songwriters and performers. From the beginning of his career with Ozzy in the late '80s, through his Pride and Glory project, his solo offering, and then his war-machine band Black Label Society, the man just churns out workman-like metal like few others can. On 'Mafia' BLS has matched its best efforts of the past, as the brief lighthearted "hangover" is definitely over, so to speak.

Zakk's Ozzy-meets-Anselmo voice remains the perfect match for the band's whisky and gasoline brand of destruction. And the music? Well, the non-stop grooves and riffs are still boasted in full force. The dude can sit in a garage and jam for a couple hours, coming up with deep-thudding rhythms that can later be crafted into lurching slabs of attitude. That's the way it's always been, and we will be the lucky ones if things continue on like that for a long time to come. Sit back, crack a beer, and if the mood strikes you, kick some ass. This album will fit the mood perfectly.

The solid and slow-pounding "Fire it Up" begins the band's seventh release in head-bobbing fashion, and is followed up by the manic "What's in You." The first single "Suicide Messiah" is another bass-thick mover, with "Forever Down" unveiling an absolute cutthroat rhythm. Beware the swinging axe!
"Death March" has a steady and evil pulse, "Say What You Will" is a fist-pounding treat, and all of "Too Tough to Die," "Electric Hellfire," "Spread Your Wings," and "Been a Long Time" are solid.

"In This River" is another in a long line of great light/emotional pieces from Zakk, featuring piano, some electric guitar, and great vocal layers.

At some point in time some bonehead will undoubtedly say, "Well, all of Black Label Society sounds kinda similiar to me… I kinda get tired of it after awhile." And that person might be correct to an extent – all of Black Label Society kicks your ass in a "similiar" fashion, time and time again. But like a fine rack on a tanned cutie, BLS is something that no metalhead should ever get TIRED of. I don't hear people complaining about those. Good gawd, man!

Shot to Hell marks Black Label Society's debut for Roadrunner Records, following a six-year relationship with Spitfire summarized on the previous year's Kings of Damnation: Era 1998-2004 compilation. Shot to Hell may mark a new era for Zakk Wylde and company, yet not much has changed artistically, no doubt to the relief of fans. Over the course of 13 songs, the band showcases impressive musicianship, incorporating occasional moodiness and balladic touches into its otherwise charging style of metal. The usual comparisons to Alice in Chains, Pantera, and Corrosion of Conformity are as apt as ever, with Wylde's vocals especially reminiscent of AIC. The album-opening "Concrete Jungle" is an instant highlight, kicking off the album in high fashion, while the piano ballad "The Last Goodbye" is another, highlighting Wylde's songwriting talent, as is "Nothing's the Same," another mellow song. While Shot to Hell offers nothing that past Black Label Society releases haven't, and nothing revelatory enough to convince those so far unconvinced of the band's continuing worth, anyone interested in more of the band's consistent output from year to year should find plenty to enjoy here.

Black Label Society have a new drummer for 2010's Order of the Black, but the overall big picture hasn't changed much for Zakk Wylde's Southern-fried metalheads: they're still an unholy cocktail of Skynyrd, Sabbath, and Metallica, all the sounds that fuel a white trash night out. Wylde does have a tendency to growl like Axl Rose when he slows thing down for a piano ballad, but that downshift doesn't happen that often: Black Label Society are as close as you can get to unapologetic heavy guitar rock in the 21st century, holding true to the power of two guitars, bass, drums, and overwhelming amplification. Songs don't necessarily stick but riffs do, as do Wylde's dexterous solos, which pull off a tricky thing — they're breakneck but have a bluesy, almost soulful, undertow. The only real affectation the band has is Wylde's exaggerated growl, something that grows wearisome over the course of an album, but as pure music, Black Label Society remain as effective as they ever were on Order of the Black.
