My sentimental side has been kicking in overdrive insofar as the departed Ronnie James Dio has been concerned of late, so much so that I near forgot that the same year saw the passing of yet another auspicious figure in the world of metallic innovation in Peter Steele. But while recent studio keepsakes don’t venture out of the year 2007, something else has sparked my remembrance of the raven haired hybrid of Lurch and Gomez Adams, and that is the recent project of his former band mate Sal Abruscato. As the original drummer that stuck with the band all the way through their acclaimed breakthrough “Bloody Kisses”, he proved to be a very versatile player, stretching the bounds between the punishing slowness of Gothic tinged doom and rapid fire speed metal. But this particular beast sees the long time wayward percussion technician taking on a new mantle that is much closer to his fallen former band mate.

“And Hell Will Follow Me” is a de facto continuation of the signature sound Type O Negative after Sal left (ironically enough), with a few noteworthy exceptions. The deep, yet somewhat processed production has that same unique blend of Black Sabbath and post-doom modernity with maybe a slight hint of grunge influence that typified “October Rust” is present, though without the raunchy distorted bass sound that Peter would often employ. In fact, A Pale Horse Named Death is much more guitar centered, in a similar spirit to that of St. Vitus but minus the retro 70s sound. Sal’s vocals (which were auspiciously absent from every Type O album he contributed to) are somewhat akin to Robb Flynn circa early Machine Head, but worlds better and having much less of an overt Layne Staley tinge to it.

The biggest distinction that this band has with Sal’s well known former outfit is a much more pessimistic lyrical and general musical outlook. What Sal has either intentionally or unintentionally emulated with regards to Peter and company’s obsession with dark themes and Gothic clichés, he has outright abandoned with regards to Pete’s sense of subtle humor and Type O’s free formed compositional style. This is music that follows the most conventional of song forms and generally shows the world as a bleak place from the standpoint of a biographer rather than a witty standup comedian. If one were to set up a one-lined philosophical statement that showcases how these two bands diverge with each other, Type O Negative’s would be “The world sucks, but it’s also pretty damn funny at times”, and A Pale Horse Name Death’s being “The world sucks, and here are 12 songs to explain exactly why”.

But for all the societal doom and gloom going on here, this is an album that is pretty solid, particularly from the standpoint of a traditional doom fan who might have a Goth girlfriend. Be it the fast moving yet lyrically depressing “Heroine Train”, the haunting and somewhat 60s rock influenced “Pill Head”, and the gravely slow closing epic “Die Alone” (which is all but a perfect revisiting of vintage TYPE O NEGATIVE territory), it’s all catchy and well put together. It might be a little bit predictable and straightforward for anyone who fell in love with the varied “Bloody Kisses” or the woefully beautiful “World Coming Down”, but most who were bummed out at the end of the strange trip that Peter Steele took us on can find some solace here. In fact, just about anybody who likes their metal slow and depressing will find something to like on here.
