Biohazard / Urban Discipline / State Of The World Address / Mata Leão / Tales From The B-Side

When a Heavy Music fan sees the Biohazard logo at a doctor's office or medical laboratory, the first thing that comes to mind is Brooklyn based Hardcore legends BIOHAZARD. Established in 1987 in Brooklyn, when Hardcore music was at a pivotal point. The Brooklyn based band took Hardcore music to another level, and added a new flavor to the ever changing genre. Not only did every song have attitude and power, but it also had that urban feel that makes New York Hardcore such a unique musical style. Biohazard was one of the first bands to perfectly blend Hardcore Punk, Heavy Metal and Hip Hop.

Biohazard was one of the first bands to regularly incorporate elements of both hip-hop and hardcore metal into their sound; since their lyrical fare dealt with the harshness of urban life and the resulting anger and frustration, which both genres of music have been known to address, the connection only made sense, especially in light of Anthrax's highly effective collaboration with Public Enemy on 1991's "Bring the Noise." When Biohazard formed in 1987 in Brooklyn, New York, their sound was much closer to the former band than the latter; their original lineup consisted of guitarist/vocalist Billy Graziadei, bassist/vocalist Evan Seinfeld, guitarist Bobby Hambel, and drummer Danny Schuler. They began opening for local hardcore and thrash bands and gradually built a large following with their outraged sense of injustice, political awareness, and constant touring. A self-titled debut was released in 1990 on the Maze label, but by 1992, Biohazard's fan base was strong enough to secure a deal with Roadrunner Records.

Their subsequent breakthrough album, Urban Discipline, was built on the groundwork laid down by "Bring the Noise," laying rhythmically shouted vocals over heavy, hip-hop-influenced beats and guitar riffs recalling both hardcore and thrash. The hardcore rap group Onyx recorded an alternate version of their hit single "Slam" with Biohazard backing them, and the two groups worked together again on the Judgment Night soundtrack, contributing the title song. 1994's State of the World Address solidified both their reputation for intensity and their musical hybrid, but Hambel then left the band, reducing them to a trio for 1996's Mata Leao, which some found the group's most seamless rap/metal fusion yet.

NY Hardcore scene / Metal | Magnetic Air Records # 44004-2

Biohazard formed in 1987 in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. They are acknowledged as one of the earliest bands to fuse hardcore punk and heavy metal with elements of hip hop. In 1990, Biohazard signed a recording contract with Maze Records. The band's self-titled debut LP was poorly promoted by the label and sold approximately 40,000 copies. Subject-matter of the album included Brooklyn, gang-wars, drugs, and violence, and it incorporated audio clips from the cult movie The Warriors.

Biohazard released this self-titled debut at a time when the East Coast thrash and hardcore scenes seemed to have just about run their course. Different melodic variations and other conceptual changes would revive New York hard music, but things were on the decline around 1990 and Biohazard – while a popular concert draw – did little to invigorate their genre on this recording. The band made a bold statement with their hip-hop-influenced follow-up to Biohazard, Urban Discipline. This suggests that the band was simply tuning up their hardcore stomp on Biohazard, preparing their aggro chops for the eventual rap-rock mating. There are plenty of choice riffs on Biohazard, but too many tracks sound forced and repetitive. Technically and conceptually primitive, this initial offering should only interest the group's oldest and most devoted fans.

In 1992, Biohazard signed with Roadrunner Records and released Urban Discipline, which gave the band national and worldwide attention in both the heavy metal and hardcore communities. The video for the song "Punishment" became the most played video in the history of MTV's Headbanger's Ball, and the album sold over 1,000,000 copies!

Biohazard - Early albums collection (1990-1996 +) [5 CD to 1 combined repost]

Biohazard's Urban Discipline introduced the band's one-of-a-kind, Brooklyn thrash-rap sound to hardcore fans outside the five boroughs. It's an authentic mix of inner-city vocal rhythms with metal's take-no-prisoners attitude, one that granted them international credibility. Urban Discipline is an original hardcore metal-rap album, debuting a half-decade prior to the rap-rock explosion of the late '90s. It is defiant and distinctive – in some senses a precursor of bands such as Korn, Limp Bizkit, and the Deftones, and in other ways in a class all its own. It's not the self-indulgent, "I-gotta-get-mine" rap-rock of the late '90s, as it's loaded with social criticism. It's a blue-collar metal record made by rough-shod, tattooed, fighting men. The album's highlight is "Punishment," a hard-charging anthem with a surprisingly melodic chorus. This hook was strong enough to earn them moderate playtime on MTV, even though nothing else sounded like them at the time.Though intended merely as simple music for slam dancing, Biohazard does well to mix things up within those parameters. The group successfully rearranged their typical song structure with divergent bass, drum, and guitar parts in "Shades of Grey." They're technically competent enough to implement light crescendos and decrescendos, tempo variation, and a diffuse focus of the instruments within the band. It's not Mozart, but it is one of the most authentic combinations of thrash and rap ever made.

NY Hardcore scene / Metal | Warner Bros. Records # 9362-45595-2

After phenomenal commercial success of their previous album, "Urban Discipline", the band left Roadrunner Records in order to sign with Warner Brothers Records Inc. and released third studio LP, State of the World Address. The album was produced by Ed Stasium in Los Angeles and contained the single "How It Is" featuring Sen-Dog from Cypress Hill, for which a video was also shot. During their 1994 tour, the band made an appearance on the second stage at the Monsters of Rock festival held at Castle Donington. State of the World Address went on to sell over 1,000,000 copies, and Rolling Stone magazine selected the Biohazard logo as the best logo of the year. This was the last Biohazard album with Bobby Hambel, who left due to differences with the rest of the band. (Hambel spent time in White Devil, also featuring members of the Cro-Mags, before seemingly leaving the music business entirely).

In the world of metal music, much of the heavy breathing and screaming centers around adolescent rites of passage, often rendered in sci-fi, Saturday-morning cartoon metaphors. To find a group which values the musical intensity of modern metal and thrash, but has something on their mind other than escapism and testosterone, you must journey into the heart of Brooklyn to encounter the power of Biohazard. On the inside flap of the CD tray card, Biohazard is pictured in reflection against the inscription, "Honor the courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty and country of our Vietnam veterans," a theme close to their heart as depicted on "Remember." Such is the moral tone of STATE OF THE WORLD ADDRESS, in which Biohazard turns their blaring searchlight of rage upon the disturbing day-to-day realities of post-Cold War America.None of which mean squat to your typical headbanger if not for Biohazard's wild, over-the-top musical signature–a speed-metal wall of rage. It's all there on the title tune as drummer Danny Schuler keys the furious rhythm changes, while Bobby Hambel's soaring lead guitar vies with the vocal ravings of Billy Graziadei and Evan Seinfeld for center stage. As a result, STATE OF THE WORLD ADDRESS distances Biohazard from most bands in the heavy metal genre by focusing on issues of urban crime ("Tales From The Hard Side" and "Five Blocks To The Subway"), child abuse ("Love Denied"), and inner city blight ("Failed Territory"). Biohazard is not concerned with entertainment, concentrating instead on the purgative potency of a power chord, feeding off of rejection and ignorance to fashion an emotional response you can't ignore.

NY Hardcore scene / Metal / Rapcore | Warner Bros. Records # 46208-2

Biohazard recorded their fourth studio album, Mata Leao, as a three piece in 1996. It was produced with the help of Dave Jerden. For the 1996 Mata Leao Tour, the band hired former Helmet guitarist Rob Echeverria. Also in 1996, Biohazard played on the Ozzfest mainstage alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, Danzig, Fear Factory, and Sepultura.
The words "mata leão" loosely translate into "lion killer" in Portuguese (the name is used for a special chokehold in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, look up Rear naked choke).

Between their first and second major-label albums, Biohazard trimmed their lineup to a trio, which had the effect of focusing their attack. Where they have had the problem of being a little too diverse in the past, ricocheting from metalized hip-hop to rap-inflected hardcore, the band has now concentrated their energies into creating a singular, piercing sound.

The ultimate collection of previously unreleased tracks from the Brooklyn vaults, archives of demo tapes of true Biohazard classics, songs from movie soundtracks, remixes, and tons of other cool stuff.

Biohazard's Tales From the B-Side includes a wealth of rare and unique material from the veteran N.Y.C. band. There are demo versions of "Sumptin' to Prove", "Punishment", and "Shades of Gray", as well as "Slam" (in remix form) and "Judgement Night" from their collabo with Onyx. The stomping, chaotic opener "Three Point Back" and hard-hitting "Enslaved" are leftovers from the Mata Leao sessions, while "Falling" and "Beaten" are both culled from soundtracks. Best might be the previously unreleased "Piece of Mind", a lean and muscular offering from Biohazard's earliest incarnation. A must for longtime fans of the group.
