Otep is a female-fronted, four-piece metal band from Los Angeles, California formed in 2000. Witnessing a brief live performance impressed Sharon Osbourne enough for Otep to land a spot on Ozzfest before signing onto a label. Otep’s lyrics often involve discussions of pain and abuse, and there is a very personal feeling to many of Otep’s tracks; due to the use of original poetry as the origin of many of the lyrics.

• The band Otep was signed after only four shows, without a demo, strictly on the power of their live performance. Their live performance proved to be so impressive that Sharon Osbourne offered the unsigned act a spot on the 2001 Ozzfest tour. Since then Otep has appeared at the festival three times.

• To date, the band has released five full lengths, two EP’s and toured in support of all those releases.

• Otep Shamaya has also published two books of poetry, spoken at the Democratic National Convention in 2008,and is a painter. Some of those groups that she supports, but not limited to are RAINN, Carbon Rally, PETA, & WSPA. In addition to lending her support to numerous groups, Otep has started the social networks All Shapes & Sizes, along with Girls Out Now.

• On December 21, 2008, Otep’s founder and front woman created a blog entitled, I’m Not A Monster.

• On April 6, 2009, it was announced that Otep is now signed to Victory Records.

• On April 7, 2009 Otep Shamaya announced that the new album will also mark the band reuniting with former members Mark Bistany on drums and Rob Patterson on guitar.

• Otep Stated a song from the new album, Smash the Control Machine, would be on the Vans Warped Tour various artists CD 2009. The song is titled “Rise, Rebel, Resist” “Smash the Control Machine” will be the first song to be heard, receiving air play in June 2009, off the new album slated for release August 18th, 2009.

• Koichi Fukuda Is playing piano, on the new Otep album Smash the Control Machine and Emilie Autumn will be playing violin on the cd as well

Being an old guy, I had never heard Otep before. However, a local newspaper reviewer had provided so many positive comments regarding Otep that I asked her to loan me some music from Otep, and Jihad was one of two that she gave to me.
At first I was put off by the music. However, when you listen to music so far off from what you usually listen to, that is often the case. I listened to Jihad four or five times, and then read the lyrics. The principal thing that Otep Shamaya does that is different from other female singers is her growly, screamy singing. She reminds me somewhat of the "primal scream" technique that some metal groups liked to incorporate in their music back in the dark ages of metal. The growls and screams put me off a bit, because she does seem to rely on them a bit much. However, I read her lyrics, and listened and listened to give Otep the fairest review possible.

Who is Otep most like? Not any single group. Her lyrics are dark like some early Black Sabbath, but much more graphic. The complexity of her lyrics is reminds me of groups like Spock's Beard and some of The Moody Blues more challenging lyrics, though of course her lyrics are about the deeper, darker aspects of life. She throws in elements of rap, but she is not a rap singer. Neither would I really call her a gothic singer, because her lyrics and style do not really feel goth to me, they are too modern. So that leaves me without a real comparison.

While Otep will not be on my list of favorite singers, because her current style is out of my usual range, I appreciate that she is creating to please herself, and not any particular person. The third cut on this album, "Germ", is really interesting. For those of you have been around a few decades, you'll recognize an updating of "Beat" of the 50s and some of the more experimental works of the 70s. In this piece, Otep interprets a poem with background sound effects to enhance the experience. I consider this composition perhaps the most challenging and effective of the entire CD. I also really like the growl and scream combination she gives the final word "me", as she transitions to the "Fillthee", the next song.

The music surrounding Otep's lyrics are solid, and while achieving a periodic complexity, at essence are relatively simple and pleasing. The unusual vocals are Otep's signature on this CD. I'll have to listen to more Otep CDs to determine whether that's Otep's normal style. However, it's the lyrics that are the real winner for this CD. Otep brings in elements of mythology, theology, current affairs, politics, and relationships to create a witches' brew of images and feelings. Music like this is not for the faint-hearted. If you are looking for something to challenge what you think music should be, can handle very dark, intense images, and the occasional expletive, this just may be the CD for you. Four stars for having her own artistic vision that has very real potential.

First off I want to say that I am very sick and tired of everybody praising this band and its vocalist because she's a woman. For which do you really think she will want to be remembered and respected - being a female in rock, or being a talented vocalist and poet who touched lives?
Now on to the music. The CD opens with a haunting spoken track that leaves the listener in a slightly disturbed and cautious state, unprepared for the intensity of "Blood Pigs" that comes without warning. I must say though that I'm not especially a big fan of the hip-hop vibe that runs through "T.R.I.C." and "Sacrilege". Others may like it but it's not my cup of tea. Otep Shayamala does however manage to bark the 'F' word at what seems like the perfect moment in "T.R.I.C.".

"Battle Ready" has what I consider to be perhaps the best opening and intro of any heavy rock song I've heard in a long time. Shayamala starts rapping after the intro though which throws me off somewhat, but the song is still quite good, especially toward and at the end. "Emptee" is quite the mood setter, as it consists of only piano notes backing the vocalist's subdued nursery-rhyme-like voice. But once you reach 2:30 minutes into the song, it transcends into an epic and downright bloodcurdling mass of screams that seem like they have risen from the bowels of hell.

Though a few of this CD's tracks touch on physical abuse at the hands of another ("Filthee", "Tortured", and "Menocide" mainly), "Jonestown Tea" is the most disturbing and nerve-rattling. One simply cannot listen to Shayamala descending deep into a bout of complete rage and screaming without feeling like they themselves are experiencing her pain. It sends shivers down the spine. No lie. Jonathan Davis's "Daddy" performance pales in comparison.

I would very highly recommend this album to anybody who digs music along the veins of Slipknot and Mudvayne and who appreciates intelligent lyricism. And PLEASE stop pointing out how Otep Shayamala is a good FEMALE singer. She's a tremendously talented SINGER, period.

I've been a die-hard Otep fan since the day I picked up the jihad ep and so I was right in line to pick up "House of Secrets". I've got to admit it, I was a little dissappointed the first few times through it.

I put it down for a while and then a week or so later, I picked it up again and started listening to it. It still is a classic like the other Otep releases, it just comes from a different place.

The first ep and album came from a dark place in the past and talked about raging against these haunting demons from the past, and with her superb talent, the releases were filled with just that. This album is more about stopping demons that could come about. It's political in some ways, as I'm sure you heard.

It is a hell of alot heavier than the other releases, the vocals are not rap-influenced poetry anymore, they are screams, bellows, and other sounds like a normal metal band. This record is alot more straight ahead metal than the others.

Joey Jordison from Slipknot did the drum tracking for most of the album, so it can be pretty intense. Filled with angry, ferocious songs that should keep people talking about Otep until the next record.

If you love Otep, you'll love this one too. If you don't like Otep (I don't know why anyone wouldn't)this is a huge difference from their other stuff, so you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Otep's (r)evolution continues…

Few times have I seen a CD get pushed back as much as Otep's The Ascension has. But, we can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that it was well worth the wait.

One of the best things about Otep is the fact that they evolve with each new release. Sevas Tra was mainly heavy with a few melodic parts. House of Secrets dealt more with the eery side with some standout heavy parts. And now, with The Ascension, the heaviness rules supreme again but the eeriness is always palpable and seems as if it could show up at any time.

Then there's Otep's lyrics. My God. I've heard some intense lyrics but I really doubt many could hold a flame to Otep. There's not a lot of new ground broken, she deals mainly with the same topics (God, religion, self-abuse, etc.) but she does it with such a flare that it evokes as much emotion in us as the previous CDs have. As for the vocals, they saw a major change from Sevas Tra to House of Secrets, and there's more change introduced to us with The Ascension. Maybe it was because I haven't heard anything new from them in so long but I thought her voice had changed significantly. With further listens though, it really hasn't. Her roars are still insane, her rap-ish moments are still tastefully done, and her singing–yeah I said it–is actually pretty good, resembling Poe a little.

As with every Otep CD, the music is always intense, whether it's heavy or just a piano, there's always that feeling of dread and creepiness. Special mention musically goes to Milk of Regret. The simple guitar melody mixed with the tribal drumming works wonders for the song. It begins slow but just completely erupts towards the end, classic Otep.

Every fan of Otep, whether you were around from Sevas Tra–or the Jihad EP–or just discovered them after House of Secrets was released, everyone will find salvation in this CD. The Blood Pig-esque songs are definitely here. See Eet The Children, Crooked Spoons, Noose & Nail, and March of the Martyrs. The Warhead-esque songs are here. See Confrontation and Home Grown. Then there's the slow-to-fast songs like Milk of Regret, Ghostflowers, and Invisible. Heck, we even get a radio-worthy (if only, God knows Otep would bring some much needed originality to it) track in Perfectly Flawed.

Pay special attention to Otep's version of the Nirvana classic, Breed. It has every oportunity to be corny, unneeded, and flat out stupid, but for some reason they really pull it off and pay a great homage to it.

My favorite songs are Crooked Spoons, Perfectly Flawed, Milk of Regret, Noose & Nail, and March of the Martyrs. Otep is finally back and demanding attention. Few will give The Ascension the due it truly deserves but this ranks right up there with the best CDs of 2007 for sure. Each song begs repeated listens and the CD as a whole is easy to listen to fully. There's a little something for every different brand of metalhead out there. Highly recommended.

Otep has a couple of lineup changes for their fourth full-length CD Smash The Control Machine, but the newest members are actually previous members. Guitarist Rob Patterson and drummer Moke Bistany have rejoined Otep after five years away. The band has had a revolving door of guitarists and drummers since their formation nearly a decade ago, with vocalist Otep Shamaya and bassist "Evil" J. McGuire remaining from their early days.

Smash The Control Machine is in the vein of previous Otep releases, with a diverse mix of music and vocals. "Rise, Rebel, Resist" gets things off to a rousing start with gang vocals and a catchy chorus. The title track is an excellent song, with memorable guitar riffs and another catchy chorus.
Songs like "Run For Cover" are in the nu-metal vein, with rap style vocals. "Kisses And Kerosene" is more experimental, with spoken word vocals and trippy background music. As an intro it might work, but as a four minute song it's just filler.

Shamaya's vocal performance is well-rounded and very effective. Her style runs the gamut from whispers to spoken word to yelling to singing to screaming. She has the ability to go from vulnerable to sultry to ferocious in the blink of an eye. On the ballad "Ur A Wmn Now" she sings softly with a piano and violin in the background, but elsewhere on the album screams like a banshee.

It's that versatility and variety that makes Otep compelling. Some songs take too long to get going, and there's filler, but the charismatic Shamaya's vocals and lyrics smooth over most of the rough spots on Smash The Control Machine.

With their fifth malevolent creation, Atavist, Otep dig deep, delivering a pummeling batch of songs that are equal parts catchy and cacophonous, from the brutal “I Alone” to the anthemic “Fists Fall” to the phenomenal “Atom to Adam.” Unfortunately, frontwoman Otep Shamaya’s tendency for self-indulgent poetic license that often bloated her prior albums is still present. But the actual songs here definitely live up, in the best way, to the record’s title, which is defined as “one that is marked with a recurrence of or reversion to an ancestral form or a past style, manner, outlook, approach, or activity.” Shamaya’s unmistakable demonic roar is as savage as ever, putting even the most brutal of vocalists in the metal scene to the test. Likewise, her band’s primal, pounding post-nu-metal riffage is as heavy as anything the group has ever recorded. But spoken-word tracks like “Baby’s Breath” and “Bible Belt” break the album’s momentum and would be better sequestered to their own stand-alone poetry-slam record. Still, there’s no denying that “We Dream Like Lions” is a great and hypnotizing song. Also very impressive is Otep’s cover of the Door’s classic “Not to Touch the Earth.” Ultimately, despite the spoken word tracks, Atavist proves a successful reemergence of the best animalistic traits and tendencies of Otep’s previous offerings, resulting in a feral, furious metal record to be reckoned with.
