If you don't have a CD with Bobby Shew, make sure this one will be your first. Bobby plays his heart out on this one accompanied by the great Metropole Orchestra which is a Big Band and Symphony Orchestra in one. The Metropole Orchestra is a dutch band led by the great composer/arranger Rob Pronk and it's definitely one of the finest orchestras in Europe. If you love albums like Clifford with strings this is something for you. Wonderful performances and the string arrangements are gorgeous.
The Metropole Orchestra from the Netherlands is the world's largest professional pop and jazz orchestra, although the terms "expanded symphony orchestra" or "combination of orchestra and big band" would be better suited to classify the enormous bandwidth of this ensemble. It was founded in 1945 by Dolf van der Linden with the intention of enabling pop and jazz productions of the highest level for public broadcasting. For 35 years he led the Metropole Orchestra, and perhaps the greatest compliment one can make about van der Linden’s legacy is that it was with him that the original style of the formation was created and characterised. He laid the foundation for the distinctive musical personality of the Metropole Orchestra, which has remained true to this day through all stylistic challenges and technical innovations. Whether from 1980-1991 under the young Rogier van Otterloo (he equipped the orchestra with a "double rhythm section“ - one for pop / rock and the other for jazz / world music) or under Dirk Bakkers (who successfully opened the orchestra to the world of film and television productions), the Metropole Orchestra has continuously gone from one success to another. The fruitful relationship between Vince Mendoza and the Metropole Orchestra began in 1995. Though primarily considered for the field of jazz, Mendoza and the orchestra soon grew together into a flourishing creative collaboration based on Mendoza's compositions and arrangements for the ensemble and also through their many concerts with pop and jazz stars from around the globe. In 2005 he accepted the post of chief conductor and director of the orchestra. His concept of working together with major soloists from pop, jazz, world and classical music as well as luminaries from the compositional landscape continues to expand. The popularity of the Metropole Orchestra in both Dutch and international circles is greater today than ever!
