Taped in front of rapturous audiences in stadiums and arenas, and also documenting the more informal theatre and club shows beloved of their diehard fans, these albums feature high-octane renditions of the group’s biggest hits – Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Brown Sugar, Tumbling Dice, Miss You, Start Me Up – as well as great covers of material originally recorded by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Eddie Cochran, the Miracles, the Temptations, Bob Dylan and B.B. Album Review:

Recorded at Muscle Shoals in Alabama, with the Rolling Stones mobile and at Olympic Studios in London, Sticky Fingers is an acknowledged masterpiece and rightly features on the list of Rolling Stone Magazine's Greatest Albums Of All Time. It came housed in a controversial 'zipper' sleeve conceived by Andy Warhol - and topped the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The US number one single Brown Sugar has become the ultimate rock anthem but the riffy Bitch is just as intoxicating while the ballads Sister Morphine and Moonlight Mile are timeless classics. Sticky Fingers also provided rock fans with Can't You Hear Me Knocking and Sway. The much-covered Wild Horses and Dead Flowers inaugurated a rich run of country-tinged material for the band. Keith Richards & Mick Jagger's songwriting partnership had reached another level as this album was unveiled in 1971.

Album Review:

Originally issued in 1973, Goats Head Soup was another Transatlantic chart-topper. Recording started at Byron Lee's Dynamic Sound Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, in late 1972 and was completed in London and Los Angeles the following year. Packaged in another iconic sleeve shot by photographer David Bailey, it's fondly remembered for the ballad Angie, a US number one, and the swear words on the raunchy closer Star Star. The ominous opener Dancing With Mr. D, the funky Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) and the gorgeous Winter have been a tad overshadowed by the rest of the group's mighty canon and are well worth rediscovering.

Produced by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards under their Glimmer Twins guise, It's Only Rock 'N' Roll was another number one album in the US in 1974, and contains two hit singles, the title track and a great reworking of an old Motown favourite, The Temptations' Ain't Too Proud To Beg. Guy Peellaert's fin de si?cle sleeve beautifully captures the mood of the times. Mick Taylor ended his tenure with some wonderful guitar work on Time Waits For No One while his eventual replacement Ronnie Wood hosted the sessions for It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It), a concert favourite to this day.

Album Review:

The Rolling Stones went through the process of auditioning several guitarists, including Wayne Perkins and Harvey Mandel, who both guest on Black And Blue, the album which debuted at number one in the US in 1976. But Wood was always the favourite and duly joined Charlie Watts on the back of the gatefold sleeve. Recorded in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the US, Black And Blue features the wonderful ballads Fool To Cry and Memory Motel and some top notch riffing on Hand Of Fate and Crazy Mama. The irresistibly funky Hot Stuff became a club hit, a sign of things to come for a formidable band equally at ease with blues, rock, country, reggae or dance.

The reggae influence on the songs on Black And Blue came primarily from Keith… Mick was certainly into reggae. I had all those (reggae) records in France with me when we moved there and when we were recording tracks for Exile On Main Street at Keith's house. Mick used to have them as well. I'd play him Cherry Oh Baby or he'd play one to me. And The Harder They Come was an album Keith listened to a lot. - Charlie Watts, 2003.

Originally issued as a double vinyl album in October 1977, Love You Live captures the band at a time when their Canadian escapades were making headlines around the world. Released a year on from their triumphant appearance at the Knebworth Fair, it made the Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic. The album includes the acknowledged classics Honky Tonk Women, Happy and You Can't Always Get What You Want, and the medley If You Can't Rock Me/Get Off Of My Cloud taped during the band's record-breaking run at London's Earls Court in May 1976. Going back to their rhythm'n'blues roots as if they were at the Crawdaddy Club or Eel Pie Island in the early sixties, they revived Mannish Boy, a song most commonly associated with the father of Chicago blues Muddy Waters, the Willie Dixon composition Little Red Rooster, made famous by Howlin' Wolf and a chart-topper for the Stones in 1964, and two more Chess label favourites, Bo Didley's Crackin' Up and Chuck Berry's Around And Around.

Album Review:

Some Girls introduced a whole new generation to the music of the Stones. The infectious dance groove of Miss You topped the US charts, as did the album in 1978. Both releases also made the Top 3 in the UK, where the country-flavoured Far Away Eyes, featuring Ronnie Wood on pedal steel guitar, enjoyed substantial airplay. Respectable, the follow-up single in Britain, proved that they could match the punks they had influenced so much. The US market preferred the mid-tempo Beast of Burden which went Top Ten there. A cover of The Temptations' Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), the driving When The Whip Comes Down, Keith Richards' vocal turn on Before They Make Me Run and the urgent Shattered - a US Top 30 single - make this a must-have album, which has already sold over 6 million copies worldwide, and still provides the group with concert highlights 30 years on. Peter Corriston's striking cover design, controversial at the time, remains a classic.

I'd moved to New York at that point. The inspiration for the record was really based in New York and the ways of the town. I think that gave it an extra spur and hardness. And then, of course, there was the punk thing that had started in 1976. Punk and disco were going on at the same time, so it was quite an interesting period. New York and London, too. Paris - there was punk there. Lots of dance music. Paris and New York had all this Latin dance music, which was really quite wonderful. Album Review:

First issued in 1980, Emotional Rescue was a transatlantic chart-topper and its infectious title track made the best-sellers list too. Recorded in Nassau in the Bahamas, in Paris and in New York, and produced by Jagger and Richards under their Glimmer Twins guise, it also contains the classic rocker She's So Cold, which went Top 40 in both the UK and the US, and Dance (Pt 1), another groove-oriented track, which was a club hit in the States. The bittersweet ballad All About You features one of Richards' most affecting vocal performances as well as Bobby Keys' distinctive saxophone. Corriston used a thermo camera to create the album's unusual cover, and drew on the same technique for the Emotional Rescue video.

The material on Emotional Rescue was a little bit more diverse than had gone on before. If anything, it was a little more soul-orientated and laid back than the Some Girls album. A lot more relaxed. The writing for that album was a little bit more experimental. There hadn't been a long writing period. All of this built-up frustration had come out in Some Girls, but the Emotional Rescue felt a little bit left over. - Chris Kimsey, 1982.









Album Review:

Tattoo You is another undisputed classic and rightly topped the US charts for nine weeks on its original release in 1981. Its opening track and first single, Start Me Up, remains one of the band's best-loved songs and a mainstay of their live set. The cleverly sequenced Tattoo You comprises six rock tracks, including the US Top 20 hit Hang Fire, the fast blues of Black Limousine, Richards' lead vocal on Little T & A, and the sneering Neighbours, but the five ballads which follow - and formed the second side of the original vinyl - really lift it into another league. The sweet soul of Worried About You, Tops and the sublime Waiting On A Friend, featuring jazz great Sonny Rollins on saxophone, in particular show what a fine singer Jagger is. Corriston's cover design won a Grammy Award for best album package.

We called it Tattoo You because we had these paintings by that guy and we just didn't know what to call it… Some friend of mine from Pharoah Island did these paintings… they're actually photographs but with that tattoo painting on them. I saw him do some other stuff and we liked them so I gave him a couple of pictures and asked him to do them like that. Then we used them for the cover. Album Review:

Still Life (American Concert 1981), to give the album its full title, was released in the summer of 1982, just as the group were headlining stadiums across Europe, and also made the Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic. Arguably the Stones' most commercially-successful live recording to date, it spawned two hit singles, their infectious take on The Miracles' Going To A Go-Go, and their revival of Jerry Ragovoy's Time Is On My Side, popularized by Irma Thomas and first recorded by the group in 1964. It also includes a swaggering cover of Eddie Cochran's Twenty Flight Rock as well as romps through the Stones sixties classics (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Under My Thumb and Let's Spend The Night Together.

Album Review:

Produced by the Glimmer Twins and Chris Kimsey, and recorded in Paris and New York, Undercover made the Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic in 1983. Its lead-off single, the stunning Undercover Of The Night, incorporated elements of reggae, dub and dance and proved that the group kept their finger on the pulse of popular music. Jagger has never been in better form than when delivering its politically-charged lyrics. He also raps about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the nasty Too Much Blood. The Top 50 single She Was Hot has rightly been revived by the band in recent years, as has the Richards-sung rocker I Wanna Hold You. Corriston's cover originally came with strategically-placed stickers.

When we started off writing (the album), Keith and I got in a bit early and we rented an 8-track demo studio here in Paris. And I said, Well, have you got some, Keith? and we took turns at playing the drums and - well, we played guitar and we got to know the material each of us had written in the past few months, you know. Album Review:

A rousing cover of Bob & Earl's Harlem Shuffle, with Jagger's distinctive vocals to the fore, heralded the arrival of Dirty Work. This single made the Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic in 1986. Produced by Steve Lillywhite and the Glimmer Twins, the album was dedicated to the memory of Ian Stewart, the group's original piano player and unofficial sixth member, who died the previous year.

Album Review:

The release of Steel Wheels in 1989 followed the group's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and coincided with their eagerly-awaited return to the live arena. Recorded at Air Studios in Montserrat and Olympic in London, it made the Top 3 in Britain and in the States. It contains classic tracks like the US Top 5 single Mixed Emotions as well as Rock And A Hard Place, which boasts a trademark riff as infectious as any they've come up with. The incredibly atmospheric Almost Hear You Sigh also charted while Richards often reprises the ballad Slipping Away in concert.

Album Review:

First issued in April 1991, Flashpoint is a Stones live album with a difference, since it boasts two studio cuts exclusive to this release, the politically-charged Highwire, a comment on the Gulf War reminiscent of the group's epochal Street Fighting Man, and a Top 30 single in Britain, and the louche Sex Drive. The album charted at number 6 in the UK and featured outstanding versions of Ruby Tuesday and Paint It, Black alongside the rockers Sad Sad Sad and Rock And A Hard Place from the Steel Wheels album, as well as the rarely played Factory Girl, from the seminal Beggars Banquet, while guitar hero Eric Clapton guested on Little Red Rooster.

Album Review:

Compilation of hit singles from 1971 to 1989. Far better than the Rewind album from 1984, it does not overlook any major US hit single written by the Glimmer Twins in this period. Best quality on eighteen (18) selections, of which only two are from their old Abkco catalog. An even disbursement of representatives from each album and Bitch to boot. It does skip on Heartbreaker from 1973, but there is not too little or too much from any single album and with exception only to Harlem Shuffle, all were original compositions. Joining the two Big Hits releases from 1966 and 1969, Jump Back is among the best single-disc Stones comps available. Large chunks of two songs were removed to make room on a single CD, yet in the case of Rock And A Hard Place, edited only by a shortened fade out. A total of five (5) of the selections are edited, including three which are also found on the rare Sucking In the Seventies CD. The only difference from the Virgin edition is that Miss You is not edited. The Virgin edition lasts 3:36.

Album Review:

Recorded in Dublin and in Los Angeles, and produced by Don Was, Voodoo Lounge topped the British charts on its release in 1994. The rockers Love Is Strong - featuring Jagger on harmonica - You Got Me Rocking and I Go Wild all performed strongly in the UK Top 40, while Out Of Tears continued the group's fine tradition of late-night, soul-searching, soul-infused ballads and featured a killer vocal performance by Jagger. The singer also excelled on the equally contemplative Blinded By Rainbows, a forgotten gem in their repertoire, and the swaggering Sparks Will Fly, driven by the ever-excellent Charlie Watts on drums. Voodoo Lounge deservedly won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 1995.

It could have been anywhere, but it happened to be Eddy Grant's place in Barbados on both counts. We spent three months (sic) there. So by the time we got into the recording studio, we could play something and you'd go, Oh, I remember that… I did this and that on it. Album Review:

Having pioneered the concept of alternating big shows and back-to-basics gigs, the Stones put yet another spin on the live album with Stripped in November 1995, and were duly rewarded with another Transatlantic Top Ten entry. During the Voodoo Lounge tour, their first with bassist Darryl Jones, the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world simply kicked back in Lisbon and Tokyo studios and revisited Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away - a Top 3 single for them in 1964 - and Little Baby, the Willie Dixon composition first recorded by Howlin' Wolf. They also cherry-picked highlights - Shine A Light, Angie - from intimate shows at legendary venues like the Paradiso in Amsterdam or the Olympia in Paris. This low-key approach afforded the group the opportunity to explore its acoustic, country-flavoured repertoire, Wild Horses, Dead Flowers and Sweet Virginia in particular, though their inspired reworking of Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone, from their memorable gig at London's Brixton Academy, remains the album's undisputed highlight. It duly became their biggest UK single in over a decade.

Album Review:

Originally issued in 1997, Bridges To Babylon made the Top 3 in the US and number 6 in the UK. The yearning and sinuous Anybody Seen My Baby? and the mean and moody Saint Of Me - both Top 30 hits in the UK - in particular, showed the band remained at the cutting edge. Energetic rockers Low Down and Too Tight repay further investigation as do the three tracks sung by Richards, in particular the closer How Can I Stop which features another jazz legend, Wayne Shorter, on saxophone.

Album Review:

Documenting the lengthy 2002-2003 tour in support of the career retrospective 40 Licks, Live Licks is another great addition to the Stones' catalogue of concert recordings, and put in a strong chart performance on its release in November 2004. The shows mixed best-loved songs with unexpected gems from the band's huge back catalogue, and the two CDs mirror that approach. The first one comprises favourites such as It's Only Rock'n' Roll (But I Like It) and Gimme Shelter while the second one majors on rarely played deep cuts like Monkey Man, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Rocks Off, Beast Of Burden, When The Whip Comes Down, Neighbours and Worried About You from the chart-topping albums Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, Some Girls and Tattoo You.

A Bigger Bang, the Rolling Stones last studio album to date, made the Top 3 on both sides of the Atlantic in 2005. Its release coincided with the group's longest ever world tour, lasting two years, a feat likely to remain unbeaten by any other rock artist. Recorded mostly in France, it recalls the informal vibe of Exile On Main Street and has sold in excess of 2.5 million copies to date. A double A-side single coupling the rocker Rough Justice and Streets Of Love, another superior soulful ballad, reached number 15 in the UK, while the Bush-baiting Sweet Neo Con made headlines in the US..
