Label: MINOS - EMI | Greek instrumental, laterna, traditional

Laterna is a traditional Greek musical instrument that tends to disappear. It has a very special nostalgic sound and it is played by turning a drum ("La torna"). Nikos Armaos was the last famous Greek laterna player. This rare CD contains 12 popular songs of the two greatest Greek composers, Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis, played by Armaos in his unique way. Very special offer for my Avaxhome friends.

The first Laterna was created at Instambul in 1880 by the collaboration of the Greek popular instrument manifacturer Joseph Armaos (father of Nikos) and the Italian musician Giuseppe Turconi. The new auto-playing big instrument became very popular and despite its big size, it was carried on the streets offering its beautiful sound to every passerby. Today there are only 2-3 laternas remaining in Greece that will disappear as soon as the last old players die.

Enjoy this unique CD and discover the sweet Laterna's sound
