Without doubt, the recordings of Tangerine Dream have made the greatest impact on the widest variety of instrumental music during the 1980s and '90s, ranging from the most atmospheric new age and space music to the harshest abrasions of electronic dance. Founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese in Berlin, the group has progressed through a full three dozen lineups (Froese being the only continuous member with staying power) and four distinct stages of development: the experimentalist minimalism of the late '60s and early '70s; stark sequencer trance during the mid- to late '70s, the group's most influential period; an organic form of instrumental music on their frequent film and studio work during the 1980s; and, finally, a more propulsive dance style, which showed Tangerine Dream with a sound quite similar to their electronic inheritors in the field of dance music.

This anthology is the most complete (and of course, the largest) collection of TD albums that is roaming the net these days. Together with the "Tangerine Tree"-collection, it contains more then 200 albums from five decades! Nevertheless, there are better-quality versions of some of these albums floating around, especially here on AvaxHome, the place for high quality music. Those of you, who can tell the difference between 192kbps and 256 kbps or between 320kbps and FLAC, you may like to regard this collection as a basis and upgrade your archive from time to time with better bitrate versions if and when they're available. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the work and art of Tangerine Dream as much, as I do.

Notes
The soundtrack album Mota Atma was Tangerine Dream's first official full length album in 2003; the world wide release date was April 29th, 2003. The music is based on a soundtrack Edgar Froese composed for a Japanese/American co-produced documentary, but it is unknown whether this movie has ever been released officially. The composition Gate Of Saturn that was announced on the Astoria Theatre London single release as part of this album is here retitled Brain Offender by unknown reason.

In January 2007 this release became available as MP3 download at the Tangerine Dream Download Shop. While the compositions had been credited to both Edgar Froese and Jerome Froese in the original CD booklet, all tracks are listed as compositions by Edgar Froese only on the downloadable artwork.

Notes
In late 2003 TD surprised their fans with the announcement of Rockface, a live recording from the 1988 North America tour. The double album was finally released on December 18th, 2003 and features a virtually untouched soundboard recording of the third-last gig of that tour, recorded in Berkeley/San Francisco.

After several bootlegs and fan releases this album is the first official recording from that tour featuring the short-time line-up Froese/Haslinger/Wadephul. The sound quality is excellent for a live album, though not always studio standard. One minor flaw is the missing of about three minutes of music on the first disc (according to official information from TDI the sound engineer had to change tapes at that moment). The missing part is located in the midst of the track Parabola and consists of unreleased music very reminiscent of the composition I Hear You Now by Jon & Vangelis. Anyway the music is mixed quite well, so the missing part can be hardly noticed if the listener cannot compare the music to other fan or bootleg recordings of the same tour.

This is the first release of a series of (almost) complete, untouched live concerts taken from Tangerine Dream's vaults, carefully remastered by Jerome Froese. The series includes the following albums:

* Rockface (Recorded 1988, released 2003)
* East (Recorded 1990, released 2004)
* Arizona Live (Recorded 1992, released 2004)
* Vault IV (Recorded 1986, released 2005)
* Rocking Mars (Recorded 1999, released 2005)

Notes
This is the third album of the so-called 'Vault' series by Tangerine Dream, featuring unaltered remastered original Tangerine Dream concerts. The series includes the following albums:

* Rockface (Recorded 1988, released 2003)
* East (Recorded 1990, released 2004)
* Arizona Live (Recorded 1992, released 2004)
* Vault IV (Recorded 1986, released 2005)
* Rocking Mars (Recorded 1999, released 2005)

Arizona Live features a complete concert recorded during the 1992 North America tour. Like the other vault releases, the recording has an excellent sound quality, and this time the concert even is complete, including the entire two-part main set as well as all four compositions played as encore. The concert featured live versions of compositions taken from the studio and soundtrack albums Risky Business (1983), Melrose (1990) and Rockoon (1992) as well as two compositions which would be released later on the albums Turn Of The Tides (1994) and Oasis (1997). The nine other compositions have never been released on studio albums but on the live album 220 Volt Live (1993) which featured some highlights of the 1992 tour but not a complete concert. So this album does not present anything real new for the Tangerine Dream collector, but on the other hand for the first time a high-quality, complete and untouched concert of the last US tour Tangerine Dream performed to date.

Notes
In 2004, roughly two years after the release of Inferno, being the first of the Dante trilogy, the second part, titled Purgatorio, was released on a double CD in March 2004 as a pre-release version available only via internet from the TDI site and selected mail order companies. Similar to Inferno, the official store release was issued a short time later, featuring slightly different cover artwork, including a barcode field that is missing on the pre-release copies. Furthermore the official release has a slightly different sound mix.

The music of Purgatorio is quite similar to that of Inferno but features more instrumental parts and has some stronger, sometimes even catchy melodies.

Notes
Jeanne d'Arc, released in late summer of 2005 has been the first proper studio album since Mars Polaris - Deep Space Highway To Red Rocks Pavilion (1999), leaving aside the Dante Trilogy and the Dream Mixes series. Similar to Mars Polaris, TD presented their new studio album during a live concert, which took place in Berlin in July 2005 in Berlin (an audience recording has been fan-released as Tangerine Tree Volume 79: Berlin 2005).

The live performance as well as the album itself received a quite warm welcome from TD fans, as it marked somehow a return to a more classic approach: the nine tracks of the album are interconnected by bridges, forming a whole composition of nearly eighty minutes. What is more: the line-up Edgar Froese/Jerome Froese has been joined by a third composer for the first time since 1990. This obviously had a strong impact on style and content of the album. The new man on board is Thorsten Quaeschning, a Berlin based musician who had already worked as sound engineer on a number of TD albums as well as on solo releases of Edgar Froese.

Notes
After rumours of a new collaboration between Edgar Froese and former member Johannes Schmoelling in May 2005 the album Kyoto finally was released. It turned out that it contains not really newly composed music but leftovers back from 1983.

The official press information says: "Back in 1983 when Tangerine Dream toured Japan the first time, Edgar and Johannes came up with a lot of compositions which should have been performed during the tour and released on record later. The tour happened successfully, but due to controversies within the band, this music material never saw the light of a day. Because of the fact that the music had nothing to do with other band members at that time, Edgar and Johannes decided 22 years later to make the material a full length CD. Old 24 track tapes had to be restored to make this happen. So what you hear on this record is – the emotional situation the two composers were into many years back at the peak of one of Tangerine Dream's most creative periods."

In an interview with Conrad Gibbons in September 2005 Johannes Schmoelling tells about Kyoto: "It was quite fun to work with Edgar. Kyoto is more a combination of 'OK, what is in your archive? What is in mine? Let's put it together.' So I haven't met Edgar since March or April. […] I think it's quite a good record but I think, I'm not so friendly with the idea of always looking back, look on the past, what we did twenty, twenty five years ago. But I can imagine maybe Edgar and I will come together and say 'Well let's look at what we can do together in bringing in new material', maybe this is quite possible."

Notes
On the official Tangerine Dream home page Phaedra 2005 was anounced as follows: "When the album Phaedra hit the album charts worldwide back in 1974, no one had foreseen such a remarkable career of a new musical sound created by Tangerine Dream. All instruments were new and unknown to the audience. The sound itself was the opposite of all common music at those days. During the concerts the band created an uncomparable atmosphere. Now, more than 30 years later you can listen to the modern form of this classic recording. The material has been re-recorded by using partly the same kind instruments as on the original recording. Also the new digital technology has played a keyrole during various recording sessions. It was not the intension to please all the TD purists and analogue fans - but you will have an idea of how the band is still connected to the style and trademark that has made them so original. The additional title Delfi has been composed 2005 in the spirit of the seventies."

Notably, Jerome Froese was not involved in this album at all; consequently it was released on Edgar Froese's own Eastgate label instead of TDI. According to the official website this album established a new era of Tangerine Dream: the 'Eastgate Years' have begun, setting an end to the 'TDI Years' (formerly known as 'Millennium Years') and finally resulting in a split between Edgar's activities (who continued TD together with Thorsten Quaeschning and guest musicians) and Jerome's own solo carreer.

Notes
Similar to the release of Shepherds Bush in 1996 Tangerine Dream released a limited edition of a special single due to their concert on June 11th, 2005 at the same place. The single was first sold during the concert, remaining stocks were later made available at the TDI online shop and through some mail order distributors. The single contains two tracks, the first one, The Greek Mirror, being a previously unreleased track similar to the style of Mota Atma, the other one, Jupiter Space Doors, being a Dream-Mixes-like remix of an excerpt of Phaedra. In fact, the concert was announced as live performance of this 30 year old album, but this was not entirely true: only a remixed version of the tracks Phaedra and Mysterious Semblance At The Strand Of Nightmares were performed, followed by a number of other composition from 1974 to 2004, so the concert was kind of a (roughly chronological) "best-of" performance of 30 years of Tangerine Dream. On the other hand, Jupiter Space Doors was a kind of preview to the announced album Phaedra 2005 which turned out to be indeed a completely re-recorded or remixed version of the original album from 1974 (though it does contain a completely different version of the title track than the Jupiter Space Doors version).

Notes
In May 2006 the album Blue Dawn was released, featuring previously unreleased studio material by Edgar Froese and short time member Ralf Wadephul, dating back from the US tour 1988.

This is the third time material that did not make it to a proper release when composed has been released many years later, giving a hint on what TD (or individual members) were working on besides the released albums. The other two are the last cd of The Dream Roots Collection (1985/86, released 1996) with Chris Franke and Kyoto (1983, released 2005) with Johannes Schmoelling.

The inner side of the 2-page front insert says: "The material of this album was composed during Tangerine Dream's North American tour back in August/September 1988. Weeks after weeks in tourbusses, planes, hotels and various locations gave the two guys here the opportunity to get musically into something different off stage. The plan was to release the stuff as an on and off the road album later in the year. The road feeling as well as the summertime in the states had been a strong influence for these compositions. The album was completed while hanging out after the tour at a friend's place in LA. Because of various reasons the album had a delay for over about seventeen years before it now will be presented to the public."

On his homepage Ralf Wadephul tells about the making of Blue Dawn: "After many years I got a call from Edgar asking if I would be interested in collaborating again on a studio project regarding unfinished sketches from off days during the 1988 US tour. I guess he had already in mind to release the material under specific circumstances. But how could it work? After the split I continued working for years in the same field of music. So I started digging into my library of various work in order to find some 88 stuff. After weeks I found these tapes on one of my hard disk. The result sounded very much 'tourlike' so I had to give it quite a bit of polish treatments as well as adding some newer sounds. But it wasn't too different from the old TD tracks back then. At the same time Edgar did the same to some of his older 'tourlike' material. One of TD's technicians knew a way of cleaning up the stuff with some special technical treatments – thanks Christian! So we met in Vienna in 2005 to check all the material – and what a surprise, most of the music did merge together so smoothly, that it didn't take more than two weeks to complete the record. And it was there – the phatt and powerful old analogue sound! But before finishing work, we had to make the decision: leaving the tracks as they are or adding something? Should we change sounds? Should the stuff being remixed? Would it violate the composition if we change it? Finally we've felt that the old versions were uncompleted and so we decided to give the music some of these extra colours which definitely would bring it up to a better level. We just wanted to do it right! After all these years, I still love Sun Gate and Edgar's guitar. So I asked him to play guitar on some of my tracks and I think it was a good idea! And, of course there has been much more 'sketchy' stuff from that tour which couldn't be released on Blue Dawn – so we will consider working on it if our both schedule will allow it. In the meantime enjoy some 'off day' memories from the late eighties!"

The album consists of ten tracks, six of them composed by Ralf Wadephul, the others by Edgar Froese. While the latter tracks are not that different from other solo compositions by Edgar Froese and might well be recorded in recent time, the material by Ralf Wadephul obviously origins from the late eighties, and though it has been slightly reworked for this release it gives a hint of what TD could have become if he had not left shortly after the tour. Band member Paul Haslinger apparently was not involved in composing any of the material.

Notes
"The phylogenetic unconscious circuit of nothing and the conscious illusion of everything searching for the black hat in a dark room which isn't there.
It's everywhere where you're absent."

The EP Metaphor was released in late 2006 as a limited edition and consists of four tracks that seamlessly float into each other forming a composition of about 23 minutes. While the first three parts are instrumental, the last part features vocals by Christian Hausl (who is uncredited on the cardboard sleeve) and was somewhat a preview to TD's forthcoming album Madcap's Flaming Duty (2007) which featured his vocals on all tracks. In fact, a retitled and edited version of Metaphor Earthling's Reality was added as bonus track to later releases of Madcap's Flaming Duty.

The Eastgate Music Shop advertises this release with the following words: "This EP contains 4 musical sequences and is manufactured as a 1,000 copies limited edition. It's composed to be a sound transfer between the Year of the Dog and the Year of the Pig. Enjoy yourself with new hopes and leave the old dogs behind – prepare yourself for a hot piggy rodeo."

Neither CD nor the cardboard sleeve show any order number or barcode, but the CD has the matrix number listed below. The number given in brackets is the order number the Eastgate Music Shop lists this release.

Notes
After Inferno and Purgatorio - now the Dante trilogy of La Divina Commedia is completed. Almost a year ago the world premiere of Dante Alighieri's PARADISO took place at the Brandenburg Theatre, a life performance together with the Brandenburg Symphonic Orchestra. Produced and composed by Edgar Froese and also performed by Thorsten Quaeschning, Iris Camaa, Linda Spa and six singers.
You will hear a mix of artificial and natural instruments. The whole process of voice balancing, EQ adjustments and various other post production treatment has taken months to get through with. You finally will have a true musical experience. It's up to you to follow a timeless spiritual path within a day to day life.

Notes
The booklet of this album states: "The 13 songs on this cd will open a series of re-recordings and re-mixes under various artistic and technical perspectives in order to give the listener different views to compositions originally created by Tangerine Dream and some of their short or longtime members or guests. This issue will start with a more classic approach to 13 songs created within the 40 years timespan of one of the most creative bands around. The songs are re-performed partly by the original composer or by musicians who had been or still are associated with the band. Tangerine Dream plays Tangerine Dream can be taken as a synonym for traveling back and forwards within the groups unlimited sound universe."

In conclusion, this album is some kind of a mixed bag: With the exception of the first track it contains new versions of well-known tracks only, which of course is immanent for a project like this. Anyway, for any TD fan who doesn't mind reworkings of older material and who accepts that a number of tracks had already been released (under different names) on Tangents, this album features several quite successful new renditions of some classic themes, making Plays Tangerine Dream a worthwhile listen.
