Anthology - The Tangerine Dream Collection Part 5 of 8 (1992 to 1997)
Electronica / Krautrock | MP3@192kbps-320kbps | Artwork included
119 albums and growing | studio/soundtrack/concert | 1.75 GB

Without doubt, the recordings of Tangerine Dream have made the greatest impact on the widest variety of instrumental music during the 1980s and '90s, ranging from the most atmospheric new age and space music to the harshest abrasions of electronic dance. Founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese in Berlin, the group has progressed through a full three dozen lineups (Froese being the only continuous member with staying power) and four distinct stages of development: the experimentalist minimalism of the late '60s and early '70s; stark sequencer trance during the mid- to late '70s, the group's most influential period; an organic form of instrumental music on their frequent film and studio work during the 1980s; and, finally, a more propulsive dance style, which showed Tangerine Dream with a sound quite similar to their electronic inheritors in the field of dance music.

This anthology is the most complete (and of course, the largest) collection of TD albums that is roaming the net these days. Together with the "Tangerine Tree"-collection, it contains more then 200 albums from five decades! Nevertheless, there are better-quality versions of some of these albums floating around, especially here on AvaxHome, the place for high quality music. Those of you, who can tell the difference between 192kbps and 256 kbps or between 320kbps and FLAC, you may like to regard this collection as a basis and upgrade your archive from time to time with better bitrate versions if and when they're available. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the work and art of Tangerine Dream as much, as I do.

Notes
After the release of Melrose back in 1990, TD's contract with Private Music had ended. In 1992 the company released a series of compilations of their former artists, including Susanne Cianni and Patrick O'Hearn, all of them titled The Private Music Of…. Most of the artists contributed some new compositions for these compilations, as did TD. So The Private Music Of Tangerine Dream features the previously unreleased tracks Beaver Town and Roaring Of The Bliss besides ten well-known tracks from the four Private Music albums Optical Race (1988), Miracle Mile, Lily On The Beach (both 1989), and Melrose (1990).

Notes
After Antarktis, this is the second part of the radio broadcast of the concert at Berlin on August 1st, 1987. The sound quality is nearly as high as on the Antarktis CD. Unlike that bootleg, the track listing features the real names of the compositions. The cover is a night photography of the Reichstag building; the back cover shows Edgar Froese among his equipment during the concert. The CD itself is titled 20th Century Heroes and alleged to be 'For promotional use only'. It does not mention Tangerine Dream, but instead the TD logo that originally appeared on Tyger for the first time is printed onto the CD in black and gold colour. The text on the backside insert refers to an alleged danish music label called 'Nordiska Musiken' and an alleged German company called 'Sphärenklänge Verlag'; the origin of this CD was Germany.

The only official release of this concert was a remixed excerpt of 27 minutes on the album Livemiles. Besides this material the bootleg contains live versions of material from the records Flashpoint (1984), Le Parc (1985), Underwater Sunlight (1986), Tyger and A Time For Heroes (both 1987).

This bootleg became obsolete due to the release of Tangerine Tree Volume 38: Berlin 1987.

Notes
"The best rulers are barely known to men.
The next best are charished and extolled.
The lesser are feared, and the least are scorned.
Distrust cannot summon trust.
The Sage acts without words
And the people take all for granted."
- Lao Tse Tao Teh King

Besides Livemiles, which had been completely remixed in studio, the 1993 220 Volt Live was TD's first real live recording since Poland, nine years ago. The album was recorded during the 1992 US tour and features more than 70 minutes of previously unreleased music with the exception of the live version of Oriental Haze which was previously released as a studio version on Rockoon Special Edition.

The music on 220 Volt Live is some of the most rock-oriented music the band has ever put out on record. Zlatko Perica on guitar plays a very prominent part and on several tracks the rest of Tangerine Dream almost seems to be his backing group, supplying a solid background of firm sequencers and drum beats. As a special encore TD even had played Jimi Hendrix' rock composition Purple Haze on their US tour. With this track TD got nominated for a Grammy Award in 1994 in the category of the best rock-instrumental.

Like most of Tangerine Dream's official live albums before, the music was slightly remixed for the album release. Furthermore the sequence of the tracks on this album differs from the concert, and several well-known compositions – most of them from the previous studio albums Melrose (1990) and Rockoon (1992) – that were played during the gigs have not been released on 220 Volt Live. On the other hand, the composition Treasure Of Innocence was not played live at all: It is a studio track, specially composed for release on this album. A complete, excellent recording of one of the gigs during the 1992 tour has finally been released in 2004 as Arizona Live.

Notes
The bootleg CD Antarktis contains a crazy mixture of TD music, photographs and cover text. The music comes in a good sound quality, but the choice of music and photos puzzles the real TD experts. There are only 65 minutes of the more than 2 hour long Berlin concert, but additional music from the 1990 Bristol concert, which had already been released on the bootleg CD In den Gärten Pharaos / Bicycle Race. The line-up on the cover photo (that was taken from the 1982 Logos Live album) fits to the concert events like the title Antarktis to the Berlin Reichstag building.

The second part of the radio broadcast of the 1987 concert was released on the bootleg CD 20th Century Serenades a short time after. The only official release of this concert was a remixed excerpt of 27 minutes on the album Livemiles. Besides this material the bootleg contains some compositions that are not featured on any official TD album and live versions of material from the records Antique Dreams (1981, released 2000), Risky Business (1983), Le Parc (1985), Underwater Sunlight, Dolphin Dance (both 1986), Canyon Dreams (1987, released 1992) and Shy People (1987, released 1988).

Part of this bootleg became obsolete due to the release of Tangerine Tree Volume 38: Berlin 1987.

Notes
The 1994 studio album Turn Of The Tides was a kind of stylistic further development of previous records: Not only the original cover and CD body artwork - abstracted gear wheels, completed with fractals - reminds of Rockoon, but also the music. Besides electronic equipment, TD were using guitar, sax and backing vocals again. The opening piece, Maurice Ravel's orchestral version of Modest P. Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition (1874), features keyboards, trumpet, soprano sax and horns. In March 1994 there was an official presentation of Turn Of The Tides in Italy.

Notes
Book Of Dreams, released in late 1995, was not just another "Best Of" set but a surprising item with two aspects: The old music material had been reworked by Edgar Froese like he had done for Tangents one year before, and the cover artwork was something like a look forward to Edgar Froese's at that time planned project on Hieronymus Bosch, a Dutch painter (around 1450 - 1516) well known for creating surrealistic environments. The music material was taken from records in TD's Jive and Relativity back catalogue which had been bought by Castle Communications in autumn 1995. The tracks were separated into material from 'The Pink Years', featuring titles from Electronic Meditation (1970), Alpha Centauri (1971), Zeit (1972), Atem (1973) and Green Desert (1973, released 1986), and 'The Blue Years', featuring material from Poland (1984), Le Parc (1985), Underwater Sunlight (1986), Tyger (1987) and Livemiles (1988). Especially the music from the early albums had been reworked with additional rhythm tracks and sound patterns. Some of them really sounded surprising and alienated with the original tracks being used as background basic material only. On the other hand, only a few of the newer 'Blue Years' track had been reworked and came with additional sounds, but less strong than the older ones. All tracks of Book Of Dreams have been re-released in the 1996 boxed set The Dream Roots Collection.

Notes
It was not only the front cover of the first release of The Dream Mixes which signalled another change in TD's style in autumn 1995: For this album, the functional artwork which was typical for the CD covers of the past years had been replaced by more "techno"-like pop-art design and colours. It showed a dancing girl and text in modern types. No doubt: This cover had obviously been designed for a different target group. Also was the music. Jerome and Edgar - they were mentioned in this order on the cover - remixed six tracks from their three recent studio albums Rockoon (1992), Turn Of The Tides (1994) and Tyranny Of Beauty (1995) and added four previously unreleased tracks. The mixes of the old material are named by additional titles which refer to the techno and DJ scene. All tracks are characterised by strong pre-eminent rythms, or, like the cover back side tells: "This album energizes the famous TD sound with an infectious beat." Even if the six well-known tracks from the former albums could be easily recognised by their sound structures, long-year connoisseurs were surely surprised by the "new" sound of the band typified by the strong beats. The Dream Mixes broke with traditions TD fans were familiar with.

This is the first album of the 'Dream Mixes' series that so far includes the following releases:

* The Dream Mixes (1995)
* TimeSquare (1997)
* The Past Hundred Moons (2001)
* DM 4 (plus DM 4 Bonus CD, 2003)

Notes
"Is my body something other than a swarming sea of living cells who revolve to a hereditary habit of millions of years, around one hidden essential point?"
- Gustav Meyrink

TD's 1995 studio album Tyranny Of Beauty follows the stylistic tradition of its predecessors. The track Stratosfear 1995 is a new recording of the 1976 composition basing on an idea of Jerome Froese. Largo (from Xerxes) is a classical adaption of Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759).

Asked for the real meaning behind the title Tyranny Of Beauty Edgar Froese answered: "It's a wonderful thing to look at a beautiful face, or to watch someone moving a very attractive body or to touch a very aesthetic piece of art - it reminds people of some immortal perfection which all of us would like to preserve for eternity. But the very well known fact is, that nothing in this strange world can be saved forever. We feel weak against this everlasting law. So what's the problem? What makes us feel so sad after realising that we can't stop things moving from perfection to dissolution? The solution could be that we stop to lie about reality and face things as they are - which simply means applauding beauty as one attractive part of life and respecting and honouring those things which are in the process of dissolving, knowing that they enjoyed good times, watching and living among them. That includes not only humans - it includes all parts of nature. A wise guy once said: 'A lie would have no sense unless the truth were dangerous.'"

Notes
The music of TD's official 1996 album Goblins Club was inspired by the German writer Christian Morgenstern, but there was also another idea behind the CD title, as Edgar Froese explained: A different view of earth as a Goblins Club from high above during a transatlantic flight. For this release, TD could not yet use all the advanced technology planned to introduce into their music. Not all of these devices did already work perfectly, so TD had to perform with this new technology step by step. This resulted in a musical product similar to its predecessors in style. This time, TD even had used wide-spread computer samples or presets: Fans were surprised when they found the passage of foreign female lyrics on At Darwin's Motel almost identical to the track The Child In Us on Enigma's CD Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi!.

Notes
For many years Tangerine Dream have been very much into the soundtrack business, and most of them have been released on CDs. In early 1996 appeared one of their probably most surprising releases. Zoning is a German thriller produced 1986/87, which could be seen on TV screen for a few times only and then disappeared. Without any information before, it had been re-released in the video format nearly ten years later, accompanied by a soundtrack CD with the music of TD used for this video. Edgar Froese had recorded and mixed the whole score in 1994, eight years after TD produced the first version of this soundtrack. Thus, most of the music on this CD sounds quite different from the original film score; the musical style fits more into the previously unreleased material from Edgar Froese's Beyond The Storm. In fact, the track Eyewitness News on Zoning was taken from Beyond The Storm where it had been titled Descent Like A Hawk.

Right before TD entered the stage during their Europe gigs in 1997, spectators could hear some mellow music, mostly consisting of re-arranged well-known TD material overlayed by some nature, animal or environment sounds. "On public demand", as stated in the booklet, this "pre-concert ambient music" has become available on the CD Ambient Monkeys on the TDI label. Pre-release CDs had been sold on the merchandise stall during TD's British tour in November 1997 first. The tracks of this version were not indexed. The official CD came without the track Largo (from Xerxes) and was released with different cover artwork in June 1998 in the Dream Dice box set, and later also separately. In 1999 Ambient Monkeys was re-released once more with different cover design.

Notes
Dream Encores is one of the twelve CDs that were released in the first bulk of TD's new label TDI in 1998. Though the CD is subtitled "Concert Encores from North-American and European Tours" and all compositions had been used as encores on some of the many TD concerts between 1986 and 1997, obviously most of the tracks on this CD are studio recordings: In fact, Dream Encores is almost a Compilation. Most of the collected tracks had been available before only on limited CD editions in the '90s - like Rockoon Special Edition (1992), Dreamtime (1993), Turn Of The Tides CD-5 (1994), Shepherds Bush (1996) and Limited World Tour Edition 1997 (1997). Other tracks are more well-known compositions from regular albums like Optical Race (1988), Melrose (1990), Tyranny Of Beauty, The Dream Mixes (both 1995) and Goblins Club (1996). Only Dominion is clearly distinguishable from the original live version from the album Logos Live (1982).

Notes
1997 saw the release of Oasis, the follow-up of Canyon Dreams, TD's first commercial video featuring the scenery of the Grand Canyon that had been released ten years ago. Also Oasis shows great views of the landscapes of the US south-west, most of them in time-lapse photography, combined with TD's music which sounds mostly rhythmic and sequencer-driven. As Canyon Dreams, this video was a result of a cooperation between TD and the US Camera One company. The pictures of an overwhelming nature were taken by Gray Warriner, who had already been director of Canyon Dreams, and by Ned Sickels in the most famous National Parks in the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, among them Zion National Park, Canyon de Chelly, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Petrified Forest, Cliff Dwellings and Cedar Breaks. The video however seems to be a result of a reworked project: The video cover mentions the year 1991 and a playing time of 1 hour, but in fact, Edgar Froese and Jerome Froese had put last hand to this project in studio in 1996, and an additional sticker on the cover tells the true running time of 45 minutes. The band's name is printed not onto the cover but only on a shiny silver star-shaped sticker on the cardboard sleeve – but this all does not affect the result of this great work.

The Oasis video won two awards in the USA: the "Telly" award 1997 for "Best Music & Video" and the "Gold Award" 1997 for the "Best Musical Video" in the category "Jazz/Experimental" at the Houston International Film Festival. Thus, only a few months after the video release, it already seemed that Oasis was a quiet bigger success than Canyon Dreams.

The audio soundtrack album of Oasis was released some months later, too.
