Before jazz rock or jazz fusion got its name, the youngsters pioneering the style were all in some ways related to Miles Davis. You can hear Miles in steaming hot mode with this same band on the recently/ finally released The Cellar Door Sessions recorded in 1970.

But here they are without Miles. Listen particularly to track two for John McLaughlin’s blistering scrapes on the fretboard. If McLaughlin had stayed in Europe, we wonder how the shape of jazz rock would have been? For that matter, would free jazz have reached a wider audience? Most of the noted stylists for free jazz migrated to Europe where they were appreciated.

The month and year could be wrong as McLaughlin supposedly arrived in the US only in February 1969. //bigozine2.com
