Zhu Xiao-Mei ranks among the greatest pianists of our times and is one of the most renowned interpreters of J. S. Bach’s music. The Goldberg Variations stood at the beginning of her international career and represent the ‘greatest musical encounter’ of her life. “It is a universal piece of music that knows no frontiers”, this is the message of her extraordinary playing which is being celebrated in concert halls around the world. Her unique interpretation has now been captured on DVD for the fi rst time. The live recording was produced at her critically acclaimed concert at the Leipzig Bach Festival 2014 at J. S. Bach’s final resting place in St. Thomas Church. Michel Mollard’s exquisite documentary “The Return is the Movement of Tao” complements the concert recording. Mollard accompanies the pianist on tour as well as to the reclusiveness of the French Alps and offers profound insights to the mind of a fascinating artist and her vision of the Goldberg Variations.

When Zhu came to perform in my city this year, for curiosity sake and attracted by the title of her recital as promulgated in her native Chinese language - xuan qin ruo shui (literally a black piano sounding like water), I went to her recital this November. The audience was shown, before the actual performance, the documentary of this DVD. The title of the recital becomes apparent - Zhu draws parallet of Bach (the name of which literally means a brook)'s music with the running waters of rivers in mountains. I am struck by the deep philosophic paraellel Zhu draws between J S Bach's music and nature. I immediately becomes aware that I am going to hear an 'event' - not just a performance.
And my expectations are right - the actual performance held me in tears from the beginning of the aria right to its final reprisal. I blinked and wiped, and discovered that many among the audience were similarly struck (if not among the younger group). The self-effaced pianist was totally submerged into the performance, as it appears here in this Leipzig live performance in June this year. There is no pianist - you just hear the music. Nor is the music structured; it is absolutely free flowing, yet it never leaves its structured limits, just as Zhu says in the documentary, the water flowing in the streams is so pliable, it takes virtually every shape possible, yet it remains water.
Suffice it to say, I have never heard any one else playing Bach's Goldberg in this manner.
