Classical / Modern Classical / Saxophone
Since 1990, the International Adolphe Sax Association has pursued the objectives of promoting the saxophone - in all its aspects and in all the domains in which it has been and is today a source of inspiration - and of reminding the world that the saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax, who was born in Dinant in Belgium. The Association's flagship event in the domain of classical music is the Adolphe Sax International Competition, which every four years hosts the world's finest saxophonists.

Adolphe Sax International Competition
Competition is held every four years in Dinant in Belgium. The first edition took place in 1994.
The Adolphe Sax International Competition is for advanced saxophonists of any nationality.
Its musical development is in the hands of a committee made up of saxophone teachers from Belgium's Royal Conservatories and academies. Since 2014, its rounds have been as follows:
a preselection based on videos;
a first round;
a semi-final open to the 18 highest-ranked candidates;
a final, to which are admitted the 6 highest-ranked candidates.
Any kind of saxophone may be played in the works chosen by the candidates, but only the alto may be played in the compulsory works. In the first round and the semi-final, the candidates are accompanied on the piano; in the final, they are accompanied by a chamber orchestra.
For each final, the International Adolphe Sax Association commissions a concerto from an eminent Belgian composer:
Henri Pousseur (1994),
Frédéric Devreese (1998),
Frédéric van Rossum (2002),
Piet Swerts (2006),
and André Waignein (2010).
