Crossover projects are the hallmark of the Sonux Ensemble. Together with the jazz-saxophonist Stefan Kuchel and the Sirius Quartet, the young men’s choir performs contemporary works. The Quartet members describe themselves as artists of improvisation who break out of the conventional vocabulary of sound for a string quartet. Most pieces on this CD were written especially for the Sonux Ensemble, and thus composed to the singers’ strengths. "We have worked on these pieces together with the composers, and given them their first performances over the course of the last five years. This disc features only world premiere recordings and, literally, unheard of choral music," the choir’s director Hans-Joachim Lustig notes.
The Sonux Ensemble is a young men's choir from Northern Germany, made up of the tenors and basses of the Chorknaben Uetersen. ...Stylistic open-mindedness is particularly important to the young singers and their director. Their programmes feature Renaissance, Baroque, and modern compositions, as well as titles from jazz, pop, and crossover repertoires. A special focus is the performance of contemporary works: commissioned music and the close collaboration with composers play a vital role in this endeavour.
The middle section is dominated by harmonic shifts and modulations of an unchanging two-bar musical motif, a technique familiar from pop music. The saxophone is present throughout, at times highly virtuosic and rythmically very complex, always modelling its expressivity on the text... The chamber music ensemble's hallmarks are its crossover projects along the border between classical music and jazz. This stylistic mix also characterises the Song of Songs fragments, both in the work's vocal and instrumental parts: sung sections alternate with spoken and strongly rythmic passages in the four-voice male ensemble; fully written-out sections alternate with improvisations in the instruments. Jazz harmonies can be found throughout the piece.
